Fan site Diablofans is reporting news fresh from Blizzards latest investor conference call that a public beta test for the game is due in the quarter 3 2011 -- meaning some time between July and September.
The 3rd quarter reference in the earning's call today was a calendar quarter, meaning that we're aiming to launch the Diablo III beta between July 1st and September 30th. Keep in mind that it's our current goal, and of course that can change as development continues.
Company-wide internal testing of Diablo 3 started at Blizzard last week.

What do I have to sell to get into this beta.

I would sell my soul but I traded that in a while ago for my WoW account.

It's funny to think when Ausgamers gave me a WoW beta account I was in university leading in to first semester exams.
Now we're 8 years on and I'm working at a university when the Diablo 3 beta is about to come out ;P

Gotta be honest, I barely think I've even seen any screens of D3.
Frankly I've been too busy playing 3DS games (and portal) and eagerly awaiting Zelda: OOT for 3DS to even pay attention to any other upcoming releases.

As much as i'd love to be in the beta for this, I don't want to spoil the game for when it's really out so i'm not gonna sign up for a chance. I wanna see what's in the CE when it comes out.

They want to disrupt TOR as much as possible.

I think TOR is doing a pretty good job of disrupting itself. I blame EA.

I'll be interested in how much of a hit WoW takes when it comes around, I know they are completely different but I still see some impact happening.
I know 3/4 of my guild and a s***load of people from others who wont renew their account while they are playing D3. (me included)

I reckon the beta wont include the campaign anyway, I reckon it will just be stuff like the multiplayer arenas. I mean, the Starcraft 2 beta didn't include the campaign.

Except that the Dev team behind D3 aren't placing too much weight behind the PvP experience - by their own admission, it won't be super balanced, nor is it intended to be a league gamer, laddered arena game. It's just a bit of mindless splattering fun. A bit like an FPS deathmatch.

Multiplayer dungeon running (PvM) with their new fangled randomised dungeon map thingy is a top priority, though. That's likely to be what they will focus on, in this closed public beta.

The StarCraft 2 multiplayer beta was almost the total MP experience that was launched, sans a few maps.

If the D3 multiplayer contains the core story (like the D1 and D2 MP) then imo that's what we'll get.

Its not like the beta is their ONLY form of testing though, I mean lets be honest here, a public beta for diablo 3 is essentially just marketting for the game. Its not like it needs insane amounts of data and balancing like SC2 did and its not like its something that requires massive amounts of people to be online and playing around with it like WoW does. Maybe they'll be wanting to load test the D3 version of Battlenet and various battlenet stuff, but I reckon the majority of the testing for the game can be, and will be done internally.

Multiplayer arenas will let them load test battlenet, let them test their network code under different conditions and in different regions, and let people play with all the classes, all the skills, the runes, all that stuff and give feedback on them. Makes the most sense to me.

I have no edit button my post, so I guess I'll double post.

Thats my point though, D3 has multiplayer modes that do NOT contain the story, so thats what I'd imagine they will be offering. Very few public betas ever offer the campaign part of the game in beta, its just wishful thinking to expect that here imo.

The open beta of Diablo 2 was the first Act. The WoW beta included the real content. The SC2 beta included the real content.

Releasing multiplayer arenas doesn't let them test the core game. How will people level their character and get gear to test the arena? I don't think they'd bother to put in a gear / stats trainer but I guess I could be wrong.

And yeh, sure its marketing, but a Blizzard public beta is also a huge stress test. Arenas are not going to flog the servers in quite they way they will need floggin to gauge how it all works with eleventy bazillion screaming fans. Its also not really going to provide much of an insight to tthe game, as the arenas are just a side order.

I'm happy to throw down a twenty that I'm right Khel, and that the beta includes some of the MP story / campaign :)

They don't need to test the core game in this public beta though, I'm sure they have a very capable, very large QA department doing that. And how does a million people playing arena battles stress the server less than a million people playing campaign mode? It'll be arena battles, or entirely disconnected random dungeon running like Creepy said, it wont be campaign, in my opinion anyway, I don't pretend to know the minds of Blizzard but I know if D3 was my game I wouldn't want to be throwing the campaign out there for everyone to play and spoiling it before the game came out.

How will people level their character and get gear to test the arena?

Could just be like playing on the PTR with wow, where you can use pre-created levelled up characters. Then you just spend your points on whatever skills you want and runes and stuff. I dunno, this is just pure conjecture on my behalf, but it doesn't seem like a bit problem to overcome, and its not like levelling up is a mechanic that really need extensive testing.

I'm happy to throw down a twenty that I'm right Khel, and that the beta includes some of the MP story / campaign :)

Sure, I'll take that bet. I'll be happy to be proven wrong, but I don't think I will be :P No campaign in public beta, thats the stance I'm taking.

OK you're on!

Just to clarify though ... I agree that there will be no single-player campaign, which may be slightly different to the MP campaign (it was in the other games).

IMO the public beta will include normal MP content and not just arenas. I'm not sure how that will line up with what we call 'campaign' content, but you'll party up and go kill mobs PVE-style, gain xp and loot s***, not just generate a character and bash people in arenas.
