GFK films, the production company that picked up the Tomb Raider rights a couple of months ago has announced that the wheels are now moving with writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby -- the scribes for Iron Man, Children of Men and the upcoming Cowboys & Aliens -- having been brought on for screenplay duties.
“Mark and Hawk’s clear sensibilities of action and emotion are perfect for the direction we are taking this franchise,” King said.

"We are thrilled to be working with Graham King and his formidable team -- and we aim to write an origin story for Lara Croft that solidifies her place alongside Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor in the pantheon of great female action heroes” Fergus and Hawk stated.
Sounds like a good start to bring something different to the project than the Angelina Jolie films. No word yet on potential directors or casting for Lara herself. The film is still expected to hit screens in 2013.

I'm hoping that one day, game movies will go down the same path as comic-book movies. That is, they were all pretty s*** for a long time, then one day, someone finally gets it, and they become huge blockbusters.

Iron Man and Children of Men were both fantastic. Maybe this will be the one to change it all? I'm still going to remain sceptical for the time being, but it sounds like this may be worth keeping an eye on.

Who do you reckon would make a good Lara Croft? I always wanted Rhona Mitra to play her but that was back like 10 or so years ago when the first movie came out. These days she'd look to old. It's a pity though because she had the looks and even the accent to pull it off.

I hear Olivia Wilde is in the running for the new Lara Croft.

I wasn't a huge fan of the first movies but you have to admit that Angie is one of the few who can pull off the tits to waist ratio of Lara Croft. She's often held up as one of those unrealistic depictions of women found in games and until Angelina donned the short shorts we didn't have a large pair of tits coupled with a great ass to stand on.

Olivia Wilde could pull it off with a little bit of padding.

The thing that worries me is that they are talking about an origin movie and the next game in the franchise is an origin game. No doubt they have little plans to follow the story from the game with those writers on board which may be a good thing but it also may mean that the only thing in common with tomb raider is the name of the main character.

I think part of the problem is that they're rarely focusing on games with actual substance to their story, as many blockbuster games are more about puzzles and collecting things and whatnot...

I remember back when a WoW movie was announced that I had some hope since the Warcraft 3 story (the only one I'd played) was decent enough to retell I thought. It had the whole Anikan Skywalker thing going in Arthas, and Thrall was super awesome. Pity that never eventuated.

It's hard to think of many games that would make decent movies. Even my beloved RPGs and Thief would not pull it off, since they're too intricate and often rely on the player immersively learning through first person to really get into the story.

edit: Beyond Good & Evil could make for a decent whacky-lookin movie. Same with Relentless/Little Big Adventure/The Twinsen games. I guess Bioshock maybe. And Fallout though it's essentially been done. Oddworld could make for a fairly quirky movie as well.

Turns out Olivia Wilde isn't playing the part

http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2011/05/05/tomb-raider-reboot-hires-iron-man-writers-but-olivia-wilde-says-shes-not-playing-lara-croft/

"As far as I know right now, I'm not playing Lara Croft," she said simply. "No."

That's not to say that Wilde isn't open to the possibility, as she expressed her fondness for the character and her gratitude for the fans' interest in her taking over Angelina Jolie's iconic role.

"That would be so awesome. I love Lara Croft," she said. "That's really cool that people think I should play her. That's nice of them."

So while it's possible that things could change between now and a casting announcement, it appears that Wilde's rumored status as the new Lara Croft is just that — a rumor. That said, she absolutely gets our endorsement for the role. Wilde would crush it as Croft.
