Rumour: Wii 2 Will Launch with Grand Theft Auto 5

Take this nugget with half a grain of salt, but according to French site 01.net, Nintendo's rumoured Wii successor will launch with the fifth installment in Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto series in a bid to "win over core gamers".

Normally this sort of rumour could be put down to hardcore fanboys' wishlists, but 01.net accurately leaked Sony's NGP specs before anything official had been released and are just known as guys, well, in the know. According to their rumour report, this information will be officially unveiled at this year's E3, which AusGamers will be attending, when Nintendo unveils their new console.

Again though, half a grain of salt. Stay tuned for more as it surfaces.

Nintendo have never re-used a previous name for a home console and tacked a number on the end, so I doubt it'll be called the Wii 2. They may not stray far from the name though, given its popularity.

I hope this is true. Not because I care about GTA game, because I don't really, but because it'd be a real return to form for Nintendo, and will cement the claims that they're doing what they can to bring back core gamers. This is shaping up to be an epic E3.

I expect the only true rumour will be about HD, because it makes sense. There's simply no point in Nintendo reusing the Wii's concept of fairly cheap and compact hardware with low power consumption when tablets and smart phones are a growing market (and they have new models every year).

I think what he means is like Nintendo 2, Game Boy 2 and so on. It may have some name with Wii in the title, though I hope it doesn't as it's such a stupid name. Why they chose it i'll never know.

It gets the name from the fact that it is to be played with each other (we) The two I's in Wii resemble two people standing next to each other.

I seriously doubt it'd be exclusive to Nintendo. Hopefully the system is noticeably more powerful than the 360 and PS3 though, giving the system the edge in multiplatform titles like this (provided it's also easier to develop for).

If nintendo released a system that isn't stronger than a 5 year old console, or 6 years by then i'd say they are done for in the console race.

The next gta isn't 5, it San Andreas, and even then it's only 1 city from sa not 3

That said if that is the gta "5" they're talking about and the wii is as powerful as a 360 or ps3 it would be trivial to do a super wii port.

No way in hell it'd be super wii exclusive

just a thought, Nintendo can use it i don't mind.

I've never played anything except party games on the Wii. We treat it as our BBQ/friends/family over entertainment machine mostly. For serious killing i xbox or PC. Might be due to the controller. Wonder if they'll redesign those also?

I don't think that will really be a problem. Considering the rate at which processor manufacturing improves, you can probably make an Xbox360 CPU smaller than the Wii's CPU by now.

LOL, Midda is such a fanboy.

They should call the new console 'WiiD', with the D representing 'definition' and 'dimension', as the console will be high definition and no doubt support 3D visuals. Any person pointing out the similarity of this name to a slang title for an illicit drug is just a Sony or Microsoft fanboy launching an organised smear campaign against Nintendo.

I swear just a few days ago, some other site was trying to start the rumor it was going to be PS3 exclusive due to rockstar's dislike of the old DvD format and data storage.

If Rockstar doing a new GTA, i can't see it being exclusive to any console, and unless the new Wii is something special, exclusive GTA on a Wii sounds like it may be a long way off.
