One of the year's most anticipated games, Portal 2 from Valve Software has broken free of its captors two days early and can now be obtained from both Australian retail outlets as well Valve's Steam online content delivery service.

The broken retail store street date was likely provoked by the fans' completion of the intricate Alternate Reality Game that recently achieved it's target.
Portal 2 draws from the award-winning formula of innovative gameplay, story, and music that earned the original Portal over 70 industry accolades and created a cult following.

The single-player portion of Portal 2 introduces a cast of dynamic new characters, a host of fresh puzzle elements, and a much larger set of devious test chambers. Players will explore never-before-seen areas of the Aperture Science Labs and be reunited with GLaDOS, the occasionally murderous computer companion who guided them through the original game.

The game’s two-player cooperative mode features its own entirely separate campaign with a unique story, test chambers, and two new player characters. This new mode forces players to reconsider everything they thought they knew about portals. Success will require them to not just act cooperatively, but to think cooperatively.
Portal 2 is now available on PC, Mac, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. For the best (and non-regionalised) price, PC and Mac users can purchase the game directly from Steam.

S*** yeah. I thought we still had like a week to go.

Woot!

EDIT: WTF?

$108 for Portal 2 on Xbox and PS3 at EB. Is that some type of joke? That's more than double the PC's price.

Wheatley for best actor in a game this year! Funny f*****g bastard. "I'll wait an hour, and if you don't appear, I'll come back later, and find your body and bury you. Go team!"

Also, with SP being about 8-10 hours, you then have co-op which has a new campaign, and then Multi which i presume they'll put out a sdk for.

Oh, I thought the hates in TF2 were like stuff you earned ingame through achievements or challenges or randomly or something, didn't realise it was stuff you bought at a store.

And even though I'm opposed to it on principle, I really do want to buy the tophat and fake moustache for my robot :(

Yeah, the hats were originally (and still are) items that you get from achievements and randomly in game, but if you want something specifically, you can just buy it. I think there are also some things you can only get through purchasing.

I hate shadows in games. There is no point. I do not care to see my own shadow, especially in an FPS. And it detracts to much processing power.

Holy crap am I stuck on Chapter 8, chamber 9 I think, one with blue paint and 3 turrets behind a clear wall. I have no clue what to do. It just looks impossible...
Khel
Posted 11:08am 20/4/11
Spoiler:
You can suck the blue paint up into the funnel tubes. Make a funnel that passes under the blue paint dispenser and goes to the other side of the room, hit the button to release blue paint and jump into the funnel yourself then when you get to the other side quickly get out of the funnel and stand on the pad to reverse the direction of the funnel. Once the blue gel has reversed up into the original part of the funnel (ie the bit you didn't create), place your spare portal on the wall above the gun turrets and get off the pad so the funnel goes back to moving in its original direction, which will carry the blue gel out over the turrets. then just shoot your portal off anywhere to turn the funnel off when the blue paint is suspended in the air over the turrets, makes the turrets bounce around and kill themselves, and you win!

This game is getting the same mixed slamming as what DA2 did over at metacritic. Biggest complaint seems to be at the DLC options and the shop. Some are angry they finished it in 4 hours, to which I say congrats you managed to blow through the game at a stupid pace and its your own fault. I don't see how thats possible though as i've been playing at least 7 hours and still have a while to go.

Raven

I don't see how thats possible though as i've been playing at least 7 hours and still have a while to go.

Let me explain how it's possible:
Khel
Posted 01:33pm 20/4/11
Well I just finished single player and mines at 13 hours played, but that includes a few hours of co-op, various mucking around with the extras, some leaving it paused ingame while off doing other stuff, etc. So I think it prolly took me 8 - 9 hours to do the single player, but I loved every minute of it. And such an awesome ending :)

I think a large part of the appeal of it though was the great writing and the fantastic voice acting by Stephen Merchant and J.K. Simmons. Glados was very much upstaged by those two in this game, but even she had some great lines. I mean the puzzles were awesome, but it was the peformances and the writing that really pushed it over into something I couldn't stop playing.
Hemerage
Posted 01:49pm 20/4/11
Just finish single player in 7.5hrs
Didn't find it hard enough... a chunk of my time was just me being a downy and way over-thinking bits. But still fun!

- The ending was unexpected, cute, funny, everything.
- Voice acting was A+++, had me laughing out loud the whole game.
- Would have liked bigger, trickier test rooms.
- More boss style timed events would be good.
- They should combine it with an FPS element - would be epic! :)

Overall, excellent.

Co-op tonight!
ps, does co-op have timed levels? Like Portal 1 had for the 3 skill levels.

For DM:

Spoiler:
Stick a portal in the floor and make a funnel that takes you to the roof, then when you're at the roof stick your other portal on the slanted bit of wall, which turns off the funnel, makes you fall down through your portal on the floor and shoots you over the wall, and then you bounce off the blue goo left behind from when you killed the robots.
Hemerage
Posted 02:05pm 20/4/11
I way overthought that final launch ^^
I had blue goop f***** everywhere, trying to do a 4-chain bounce. Hahah.

Then went "oh you idiot"
DM
Posted 06:21pm 20/4/11
Yeah I doubt I did it right but I managed to get a small tiny patch of goo on the corner of the floor so just bounced up directly into the beam and yeah managed to fall into a portal and WOOSH. Finished the game and was quite happy with the SP length and final movie/song. One of the best Wheatly comments was during the escape

"Holmes and Moriarty, Aristotle and SPIKY SMASHY THING"

I was sort of expecting a "chell is glados/cave johnson's daughter" but glad that didn't happen as there were a few refrences to her parents. I dunno seemed like a obvious twist to me.

EDIT - Heres the ending song. 1 tiny, spoiler in there though which you shouldn't be that surprising if your over half way into the game.

I like it more than Still Alive, the beat is a lot better I think with it's irregular stopping and such.

Kind of funny that this game was released the day before Skynet went live and killed everyone today in the future back in the '80s.
I had blue goop f***** everywhere, trying to do a 4-chain bounce. Hahah.

That makes me think of the white paint room. I pretty much painted the entire area just because I could.

The game was way too short, it took me 7 hours and I certainly wasn't rushing through it. I think they are going to be supporting community built maps though with the editing tools which could be cool.

There was one simple area that I got frustrated with where you had to be in one spot but the area to put your portal was blocked by glass if you were in that spot. I got frustrated and ended up just shooting at the glass a few times and one of them seemed to bend and go through the glass to the wall and opened the portal.

Yeah, I saw P-Body when I was in that room.

I just finished it. Freaking awesome ending. Not sure how long I took, but I'd guess about 8 or 9 hours. There were a few instances where I was just standing there like an idiot trying to work s*** out, like in the room with the sentries behind the glass a few others in here have mentioned. I sorted out the turrets pretty quick, but I was stuck after that. I was soooo tempted to look up how to do it, but it eventually clicked and I realised I was retarded for not seeing it sooner.

I loved the cave johnson line where he was "Those of you hear for the praying mantis dna test, I have some bad news, that test is permanently cancelled. Good news though, we have a new test for you, fighting an army of mantismen!"

The cave johnson bits were actually kind of sad, like it was just this downward spiral, first section they're testing olympians and astronauts and its all hugely important and they're on top of the world, then the next one they're testing bums off the street, then the last one Spoiler:
hes dying and bankrupt and everythings gone to s***

So many awesome lines though, I think I'm gonna have to play it again, even though I know the puzzles, its just brilliantly written, and perfectly cast. Was reading about Stephen Merchant doing Wheatly last night and he was saying that the Valve guys let him ad-lib and mess around with the words as he saw fit to give it his own style, I was wondering that while I was playing cos I was thinking either the person who wrote the dialogue for him knew his style of humour perfectly, or they let him put his own spin on it.

Bits that spring to mind were like where hes taken the job on the nanobot repair crew and hes like "Thanks for the hate crime jer, I'll see you in court mate", and even at the end when hes floating around and the little orb goes past and is like "I'm in spaaaaace", and he goes "Yes you are mate!" in like this happy voice like you'd talk to children, I laughed so much at that, the delivery is just perfect.

found co-op much easier than sp. friend and i only got stuck for a few mins on each one. was stuck on some parts of the sp for a little bit longer. what they needed to make co-op more fun was to make executing the solution harder. i found once you figured out what to do it was really easy to execute. needed to be slightly frustrating so you can have an excuse to yell at your friend haha :)

i stil lthink the game was easier than P1. There was a lot of babying. I guess a big problem is when you put in a lot of different mechanics in it makes it really obvious what they want you to do.

"oh goo on the floor.. i wonder..." etc etc

i was disappointed they didnt make the last level of co-op hair tearingly hard ie: each person having to juggle the other and maybe throw in some quake style flicking shots.

good fun all around. got about 12 hours out of it including co-op. might go check this directors commentary out.

Yeah I do agree with you there. Each new mechanic should of had 2 levels at most explaining what they do and how they can be used, and then the rest of the puzzles should of been hard, especially toward the end of the game.

The people who bought this game after all are the people who loved portal 1 so why would you want to make it easy for 50% of the game when these people know how to play it.

Try co=op Scuzzy. God damn some of those puzzles are hard...
Yeah I plan to once I return home, pings from here are a bit s***, and I don't think I'll be talking fluent mandarin over voice comms any time soon :)

I'd say because they've opened it up to a wider console market.

Of because the plan to charge you another $30 for Portal 2: Map Pack 1.

I'm hoping the editing tools they release will have an easy interface like those skate park map editors in Tony Hawk or RTS games so you don't have to be a programmer to be able to come up with anything decent.

There is so much potential for mods though if it's allowed, Portal CTF would be win.

it was nearly condescending while you played the game lol.

I think the SDK will be similar to portal 1's. And there are rumours that you can currently use portal 1 maps in portal 2. I think Valve will release the SDK then let the community go nuts. They have yet to make the PC community pay for updates or maps in their games.
