AusGamers was one of the few Australia gaming media entities invited to London recently to partake of some hot new gaming goodness, and Dan is currently winging his way back - but not before he managed to write up his impressions from a hands-on session he managed to score with Alice: Madness Returns.

The sequel to American McGee's original spooky take on the Alice in Wonderland story sounds like it's shaping up pretty nicely, and there's a couple of new screenshots in there that really capture the feel of the game. Check out the preview now for a closer look!

Really interested in this, but the trailers had a very generic hack and slash look/feel about it (like devil may cry, dante's intero, darksiders, etc., etc.)
Hopefully there's something a little more than other games in the genre. Having said that, I'm really digging the art style.

Hmmmm no mention on plot or character. Not good. What made American McGee's Alice so memorable in my opinion was not it graphics, nor it gameplay. It the the twist in traditional Wonderland tale, and the unique changes to the characters. Fingers crossed those are still in the game.

Finally, there’s what is referred to as hysteria mode which is a last-stand ability that Alice can only activate when her death is imminent. When in this mode Alice is invulnerable and her usual disenchanted expression turns into a maniacal grin, the colour also dramatically drains from the world leaving you to carve up your opponents in a monochromatic massacre highlighted with only the red of their blood.

...not wanting to bring up the spectre of the lack of R rating available to Australian adults but I (sadly) suspect that the classification board is going to have a field day here. Possibly another banhammer coming down. Will the mindless inconsistency from the classifications review board continue?

Highly doubtful. All the violence in the game is very far removed from reality. Nothing I've seen so far has been excessively gruesome in a violent context, it's all handled with a very surrealist artistic brush.

I suspect that any soundbyte of "OFF WITH THEIR HEADS" may cause quite the stir
