The Word of Notch blog is carrying word that they've settled on a release date for Minecraft of November 11, 2011 (11/11/11, one of the great dates that is the same no matter which date format you're using!). Obviously most people probably consider the game to be already released, and Notch points out that this is "really more of a milestone when we finally get rid of the Beta label, and some kind of goal for us to work towards".

There's also a snippet about some of the new features which you can expect to see in v1.5, which he guesses will land next week:
We’ve been working on finishing up Achievements and Statistics for 1.5, I ran into some issues with JSON, got frustrated, and added weather instead. Developing new features like that is what I enjoy doing the most, so I ended up covering a lot of ground. There’s periodic downfall (snow in snowy areas, rain in others, nothing in deserts) that make the sky darker, hides the sun, moon and stars, and makes everything wet. Ice grows back in cold regions, and snowfall covers the ground when it’s snowing. During rain/snow, there can be occasional thunderstorms with lightning. I haven’t finished the actual lightning bolt yet, but everything else is fairly done.

Weather sounds kick ass. Wonder if rain will have any effect on ground like making dirt eaiser to dig up? Also wonder if lightning strikes can cause damage/fire on impact or if its purely a cosmetic thing in the distance.

I like a challenge for survival. Here's hoping I can have a more hostile environment to build my fortresses in. Bring on lightning strikes starting fires!

Wind up your watch and change out of your elbow patch jacket first though, or else people might think you've been living under a rock for a while.

Haha, I'd actually written a whole sentence in there about "if you have been living in a cave" and I decided to cut it out at the last second

A tonne of stuff needs to be fixed and even more new features added... and he chooses to focus on f*****g weather?

F*****g typical. This guy has all the money in the f*****g world to make this thing work and yet it's still moving at snails pace.

It really pisses me off when people do this. They don't stay true to their roots and respect the people and things that got them their fame etc.

EDIT: " Achievements and Statistics" - WHAT THE F***??? MORE USELESS S***!!!!!

I doubt he'll finish it by the time he decides to release it. There is already mods that do more then what notch has done in months. I have one mod that adds Dragons, Horses and Pets in singleplayer, with a crap load of game changing mods in multiplayer.

Notch needs to realise there is massive potential for Minecraft, and actually sit down and develop a heap of ideas, especially a mod API. If you can't develop, then at least allow the modders the ability to mod without having to worry about updates. Also, a few of the recent additions have been done by modders where Notch has figured it was easier to take them.

...still moving at snails pace.
Doing the exact same thing once you've made millions is practically the definition of staying true to your roots.

Gamer, besides turning it into NS2, what is so broken or takes such high priority to be fixed? Id like to see shaders but thats not critical to gameplay.

Multiplayer portals perhaps

Yeh, a proper, supported mod API should be the #1 item on their list.

That way they can sit back and have money fights while the fans work on the game.

@eds, he needs to fix a lot of the performance issues plaguing both singleplayer and multiplayer. I just don't understand why he lacks such creativity and moving pace now. I thought he would of stuck to his guns no matter how much money he got.

But apparently not, which is sad, because I thought he would stick to his pace and attitude. Money does change a man...

There is already a shader mod (which i'm using) which can do some amazing things and turn minecraft into a windwaker style, cel shaded game.

I like the idea for weather but achivements and statistics? yeah pretty useless if you ask me. I would like him make modding eaiser and make them like how you select a texture pack with a menu and all. That would be so kick ass and would eliminate some issues you have now with mods breaking your game so it won't boot.

I've even seen a mod which spawns bots in single player which have specific tasks. Like a miner who will go and fun ore then return it to base camp. A lumberjack who cuts down trees for you and s***. Even a mod which spawns random towns and NPCs who walk around so the world doesn't feel so empty when your in single player. That's something notch should perhaps look into. Not some of this boring stuff.

Holy s*** yes.
You know your game is popular when modders will decompile every single point release just to integrate their unofficial mods into the code. If there were a compelling mod that came along they would surely make another 5 million bucks on top of the fat loot they already have.

graphics and achievements are the last thing this f*****g game needs. (seriously?? the first achievement is called 'get wood' ? what a f*****g joke...)

there has already been a tonne of great things suggested for this game that he still refuses to work on because he 'prefers other things' (his words! - hey mate, i dont f*****g care what you prefer, we pay for what we want you c****tick)...

arg, i wish I could take my money back and uninstall the game.

1. Proper mod support
2. More bricks and crafts (do i really need to give examples? teleporters, more vehicles, more crafting types, more usable items like chests that you can lock with a code etc)
3. Bugfixes (why cant I fence in animals and have them stay there when I walk away from them? things like this are necessary imo for 'farming' and building proper towns etc)

4. Improved multiplayer (delete the single player code, bring the multipler code up to speed so that singleplayer is just a listen server or you join your own dedicated server for 1 person etc)
5. Improved graphics

In that order.

Yeh I don't get the graphics stuff ... this is Minecraft, the game where the graphics are s*** but it doesn't matter.

Yeah the graphic idea's I don't get. Part of what makes it cool is that whole retro feel.

See, this is where you're completely wrong. Minecraft wasn't sold to you as "buy it, and you get to decide what it becomes". It was sold as "buy it, and I'll continue to develop it". It's still Notch's game, and if you bought it because of what you thought it would become instead of what it already was, you're an idiot.

yeah, but mantoroks right, all of us that paid money, did so because we enjoyed the game, with the hope more cool things would come

just cause we buy something, even in beta, or alpha, doesn't mean we get to dictate what the outcome will be, we are merely supporting it future devolopment

i like minecraft, alot, the game is what you make of it and there is a challenge to it, no matter how you play

and i like the changes that are happening, they seem more polished now, less buggy it is all good

also, I hate that line "the customer is always right", that is US grade bulls*** sales meant to make salesman seem agreeable and your friend,

clerks had it right, the customer is a moron

When the majority of your customers are calling out for modding API and usable content, and your busy adding achievements (which damm near everyone is completely over), then yes the customer is right.

No doubt he has had great success with this, but it could be so much bigger if he didn't piss off the masses and instead produced for them exactly what they are asking for.
Instead updates slow to a crawl, he starts projects no one gives a s*** about and some of the content he is adding, no one really asked for or wanted.
Once you start charging for a indie game, it's no longer your little hobby, it's a commercial product, and we should be able to at the very least, expect that bugs are ironed out. Take for instance, how long has it been that the side of grass blocks are an incorrect colour? That's an easy fix.
