A few weeks back, AusGamers was invited out to Codemasters to have a look at a few of the internal projects they have going on. We'll be talking about all of them in depth over the next little while, beginning today with a hands-on preview of Operation Flashpoint: Red River.

Taking on board the criticisms of Dragon Rising, the team at Codies have a crafted a familiar yet different game in Red River, which does a lot to open its doors to a whole new audience of shooter fans, while maintaining the strong components of the series that has bred a legion of hardcore fans. It's a precarious balancing act, but one we're confident they've pulled off.

Click here for our full preview, and stay tuned for an in-depth interview a bit later in the week.

I just cant see myself wanting to spend more money on this franchise after feeling so absolutely ripped off with Dragon Rising.
If they want me to play this, they will have to give me a copy for free. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Such a terrible game was Dragon Rising, had such potential too...

and so the point of this preview is to point out they're aware of where they went wrong and have fixed it. I too disliked Dragon Rising, but this is actually quite good in the form I saw it in

Yeah... Codemasters make amazing promises that flat out aren't kept.

Codemasters:
...Dragon rising will be open! You can walk across the entire map off mission and encounter other battles and do what you want!

Actual Game:
Mission Failed: You Went Off Course

actually, I need to point out that mechanic is still there - in our build if you went off mission you would die

Can we expect a Homefront review soon Steve?

One of the most awesome things about the original Flashpoint was that you could be shot down out of a plane, eject, land on the ground and fight your way out. Even though the mission never really ended at least you could still walk around forever. I don't get the point of going backwards, which really is what they're doing. They could have expanded that concept greatly and achieved something truly beyond that of the Battlefield and COD franchises. Aside from the whole simulation aspect, the expanse was what stood OF apart from the rest.

I think making it control more like an FPS is a great idea. I think removing the breadth isn't.

Homefront review will hopefully be up in time for the weekend on Friday afternoon. The embargo technically lifts tomorrow, but there won't be any Australian's playing online until it retails on Thursday here, so it would be folly to try and get a review up without being able to have a proper crack at multiplayer in decently populated games.

Codemasters can get bent. They killed a good game.

I will be sticking with Bohemia Interactive Studios for my closer-to-realistic war simulators.

It's unfortunate Codemasters corrupted the name 'Operation Flashpoint'.

We have an interview coming in the next few days that goes into even more depth about the game’s new focus and just what’s in-store, so stay tuned.

What they're going to have post release support?

"This is not a mil-sim"...... So why is it called Operation Flashpoint? Oh right you just wanna cash in on the name. Didn't bother reading it all, didn't take long to see it's going to be s***.

Yes, they are trying to cash in on the name. If you want a real mil-sim support Bohemia Interactive and the ARMA series. (the original Op Flashpoint developers). The very underrated game, ARMA 2 was very buggy at release, but now awesome with 3 expacs.
