Mojang Specifications the indie studio born from the huge success of Minecraft have revealed details on a new game they have in the works called Scrolls. At the 2011 Game Developers Conference (GDC) currently underway in San Francisco, Mojang's Jakob Porser -- who is heading development of Scrolls -- shared a bunch of details with Gamasutra, explaining that the new game will be a fantasy strategy title that takes elements from trading card and board games.

According to Porser, he and Minecraft master-mine Markus Perrson had been discussing the concept for nearly five years
We are both great fans of the CCG genre, but we felt that there were some common gameplay flaws in the available titles. We’re excited to finally put all our thoughts into action with the realization of Scrolls.
Interestingly, Jerry "Tycho" Holkins of Penny-Arcade webcomic fame is reportedly collaborating on the game's back story.

The game's official website is online at Scrolls.com -- although how they managed to nab that domain wasn't explained -- and a closed alpha test that aims to involve some players that purchased the Minecraft alpha is tentatively planned for later this year.

There's no word yet on whether they will target platforms other than the obligatory PC.

From what I can tell scrolls.com was part of some goth network: http://www.darkness.com/

I want it to be good. I don't want it to be like minecraft and updates slowly trickle through when Notch decides to do something. Though from what I've read, he doesn't have a large hand in it. It will probably ride on the name of Minecraft, so we'll see just how good they can do on a different genre.

What I want from Notch, and what he hasn't seem to noticed, is Minecraft to do much more then what it's doing at the moment. Minecraft can be massive. It has so much potential for anything. It is Lego, so anything can be done in some form.

Let's just hope with Scrolls, that they don't charge for every single damn card. Or allow you to just buy the best card ever. It's a smart design though, add the DLC style with cards, and the notion of needing to have a deck of cards to compete, and it could be a potential gold mine.

I enjoyed Minecraft. But not enough work being done on it anymore. A sign of things to come for their future titles. So meh to this new title.
