Blues News reports that everyone's favourite jolly development head, Gabe Newell, has given the nod that Valve are indeed done with their forthcoming, and hotly anticipated, sequel, Portal 2.

According to the report, Gabe gave confirmation during a 40-minute video conference to a Sports/Entertainment marketing class that also involved a basic rundown of Valve's success.

"We just finished Portal 2," he said in the video. "It's pretty much put to bed and we're just waiting for final approvals and to get the discs manufactured."

Obviously this is something of an anomaly at the company, which is notorious for taking its time with projects; working to what they dub "Valve Time". This could very well be chalked up as one of the few products Valve have delivered in "Real People Time". We're actually going to be out at Valve for the second half of this week, so stay tuned to AusGamers for more regarding Valve and Portal 2, and if I don't come back, don't panic, I've clearly been sucked into the nexus of "Valve Time" and should emerge younger than you in a few years time...

The game is due to be on shelves in less than 2 months, it's hardly surprising that the game is finished.

And it's not that much of an anomaly, it isn't launching on time. It got delayed in true Valve fashion, though they were very excited when they pushed it back, as it was the shortest delay in Valve's history.

I love valve. If you had to have sex with a games developer i would pick em and bar up real fast. At least you dont have to worry about valve games being s***.

...and you most certainly don't have to worry about post-release support, either.

the youtube comments on the horrible videos of gabe are hilarious.

Stop making fun of gabe guys, it's not his fault his blood type is nutella!

this one has to be my fav;

It takes 400.000 years to make Valve team work on HL:EP3... for 12 seconds.

I can't quite decipher whether there's supposed to be sarcasm in here, as the only Valve game I've ever purchased was Portal.
However if it's anything like Codemasters and the way they handled F1 2010, it's a great argument for a fine system for already-released games - ie, for every bug that is reported and not patched, we withhold x% of revenue.

Take a GUN, Hold it to someone's head and DO NOT leave until you have a release date for HL2EP3.

^^ Valve themselves won't even have a release date for it. I don't really care about learning the release date, I just want them to show something.

Yeah I know, but this wait is ridiculous, time to give us a rough idea on when to expect it.

Steve what makes you so special that you get to go visit my favourite developer?

maybe they've just figured out that you quote projects with an extra 30-40% of time tacked on for s*** you didn't account for
after all these years they're now quoting realistic timeframes for production

anyway, im looking forward to it
portal 1 was one of the only games i've played from start to finish in the last decade

id say its something like that yes, they probably email each other in the wok wok a nub nub language code in case a rabid qgl forum user happens to intercept one of their emails, their events and sources are not revealed

I think they also froze Term in some type of carbonite derivative and use his ashes as a hash crypto signature for communications of the Valve details too

So the answer you seek is probably going to remain tight lipped until we read more main page yeah

Trog is also a soccer god.

More and more games seem to be getting rushed out these days with an intention to "finish" them via patches immediately after, because they can. Hell, knights of the old republic 2 wasn't even finished, and much of the end story was only available through hackery and the like.

I don't think you can really use Knights of the old Republic 2 as an example when talking about games "these days", its like 6 years old.

I don't think its a matter of games getting rushed out, but its like the Gabe quote in the original post, they're waiting for final approvals, certifications, etc. That sort of thing can take months. A game usually has to be finished and locked down months before it actually comes out. If they worked on Portal 2 up until just before the release date, it would then be delayed for 2 months while it goes through all that, and then people would cry and b**** and moan even more.

Once the game goes off for certification, you can't change it, or you have to get it certified all over again. So I guess thats why developers start working on patches they can release immediately when the game launches, to fix any nagging problems or add stuff which got cut at the last minute, etc.

Fair point. Time goes to fast, feels like that was 2 years ago max.
