I'd apologise to your significant other or credit card now, because it's going to get expensive. Steam's kicked off another of its holiday season sales and they're not kidding this time:

Super Meatboy for under US$4?

Battlefield Bad Company 2 for $14?

Every single Bethseda game on Steam for US$70 (including New Vegas!)?

It gets better, especially since those prices are for the Australian region too (so yes, you can get Fallout: NV with all of Bethseda's other games for less than it currently retails for). Hit up the Steam storefront for the full list of games and packs up for sale today. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to apologise to my wife for the money I'm about to spend.

Yeah it said the last two were first time on PC. I never heard great things about them though, and mostly just wanted to finish odyssey for a third time plus have been talking about it just recently.. $3.99 is my tipping point. :P

I dunno, I just hadn't heard good (or bad) things, and wasn't keen to spend more than the four bucks. That being said I then went and started gifting everybody else copies of abe's odyssey packs... ><

Maybe Beyond Good & Evil? It was fairly good at being an all-ages thing, though may be a bit much for a 7 year old.

I reckon it's because of the uncensored L4D2 included in the pack perhaps. The rest of the games are available in AU. I think the censored L4D2 is a different steam game code isn't it?

cept both versions are exactly the same. the censored version just has a different value in a file that censors it. it just changes the value depending on your location when you purchase it.

Yeah, but as Ravn0s said, the game data is the same. I'm sure Valve are smart enough to figure out what region you're buying it from. It's not like there are any Valve games that aren't available in Australia. It's strange that they decided to block the pack completely.
Tiny

They can't offer the uncensored version directly but they don't care if people find a way to get around it...

I used Security Kiss to buy L4D2 last time it was on sale and had no hassles what so ever. Just download it, run the app and connect. Once on, go to the Steam store and buy the game(s) I want (setting address to a US one, there's plenty of smiths in Beverley Hills :P). Once it's done, disconnect and download the game(s) through your normal internet connection. I haven't had my credit card details stolen, so I can take that to mean that they're reliable too :)

Haven't specifically tried the "VPN trick" but I have access to a Singapore proxy over my work wan, so I just browse to the steam store though that proxy and It gets the US prices, and I bought F1 2010 for $20usd, instead of the Australian price of $30usd.

Or you could just buy it, gift it to me, and i can pay you $10 which includes your $3 for a full day of access to VPN.

I save $4, you make $3 off me and possibly more QGLers in the same boat.

You can then turn it into a full fledged business and make millions! you don't even have to give me a cut!

OR i could just save my safe all that hassle and i buy it for an extra $7.

For anyone else having issues:
Download the official standalone patch from codemasters
Download the GFWL setup executable off microsoft (version comes with the game is old, s*** and doesn't connect)
Run both
Enjoy game (unless you're using a keyboard, in which case you'll hate it)

So, I got fastest time in the practice session for one lap and now it's time for bed so anyone want an MP game of F1 2010 tomorrow?

edit: one more thing, it has force feedback settings but for some reason won't detect the force feedback of my wheel. Anyone else had that issue? I haven't tried installing the logitech drivers for it yet because it's 1am and time for bed so will try tomorrow.

I think it was their joke when they launched on Xbox.

Besides the placement of shift for run, arrow keys are ultimately precise. I've used my arcade stick and PC usb controllers, d-pad really didn't work.

A good portion of SMB for PC contains Xbox elements without updating, felt a bit weak seeing an interface that asks for coloured xbox buttons.

Trials 2 is awesome but pretty difficult.

PB Winterbottom for $0.50 is a steal. Anybody who likes puzzle indie games needs to own it. Some of the best yet simplest game concepts.

Super meat boy on keyboard - i suck with gamepad and thought the only positive would be the little thumbstick allowing rates of movement (as in half way right = 50% speed and fully right = 100% speed) but if right is right and he runs at the same speed, i dont see the problem. I do get sore hands though being away from my beloved ESDF (my WASD alternative).

Clones is a lemmings copy. Not bad but i never played lemmings and am not very good @ it.

The VPN trick works. Ive used it twice (used 2 different emails for 2 free trials) and had no issue.

For the guy asking about a game for a 7 year old, some suggestions. Dunno how smart he/she is or what you are looking for but each of these games are pretty simple (concept and control wise) and non-violent.
Max and the magic marker - great game. Even a challenge for adults if you try to get the bonuses on each level.
crayon physics - a bit bugged but still good.

Login to VPN, then login to the Steam website and make your purchases there. Change country on credit card to match country of VPN. If you're using a US VPN, you'll need a state and ZIP code as well (CA and 90210 are easy to remember). You don't need to download the games while connected to the VPN, not even for the uncut version of L4D2.
I recommend SecurityKISS Tunnel as a free VPN (you get 300MB a day for which is plenty for just browsing the Steam store).

I agree with Ravn0s, Risen is s***. <1hr played

Deathspank has hilarious dialogue and streamlined menus and items but lacks skills/perks and the quests are boring as. Plus no multiplayer (unless you call sparkles the wizard multiplayer). But if you like torchlight, you may like it. <1hr played

Operation Flashpoint 2 is good but pretty realistic/hardore. No run and gun gameplay like COD, rather crawl thru grass and engage from a distance which i didnt like cause u often cant see who you are shooting at cause they too are hidden in grass so its just a whole lotta shooting at grass waiting for the hit indicator. Open world gameplay like OF1 which is great but i just didnt like this one like i did the 1st. <1hr played

Darksiders is meant to be pretty good, rates highly in metacritic and is meant to be similar in gameplay style to god of war but its not my type of game and i wasnt interested. <1hr played

Dead Rising 2 is pretty cool but lacks combat. You simply mash the same button over and over so the fun is creating weapons rather than actually using them. <1hr played

I also must be one of the few people who didnt like mass effect 1 or 2. Too much story, party management and taking cover for me. Cool RPG elements but i wanted more of a shooter. <1hr played

Alpha protocol is also pretty bad. Has some good elements (skills, mini games, dialogue choices) but its combat is crap. <1hr played.

Blur is AWESOME. As many people have described it, mario kart on steroids. The racing is rather crap (fail drift, fail damage, fail concept of acceleration) but play for the chaos of the weapon pickups. I normally dont like racing games but even with keyboard only (i suck with gamepad) i loved this game. Only tried singleplayer tho. >10hrs played i reckon.

Blood bowl is Madden NFL mixed with table top games that people play. Its turn based with RPG elements, dice rolls and other stuff. I like madden but i couldnt understand the game concepts. <1hr played

As for VPN, im no expert but i found a program online with free 1 day trial (possibly called freeVPN) and all you do in steam is change your country to the VPN address and use a credit card. Thats what i did but i used steam UK for whatever random reason.

I own and have played each of those games. Why should i bother writing a big ass review when you can google the games and learn urself. Im simply stating the game basics as i experienced. Although i own those games, many i have not played much of because i didnt like them (i mainly play shooters and indie games).

Darksiders for example didnt explain the transform button which i accidently hit early game n was like 'WTF does this do?'

Sure, but it's not like you can give anyone a reasonable idea of what these games are like when you've hardly played them. At least you included playtime as a caveat.

Hence i didnt review them, just my early thoughts of the game. And many games you get the idea after play for less than an hour. Story no, but combat, sound, visuals etc yes.

Posted 03:54pm 24/12/10
You didn't even play 10 minutes...
That's like writing a review on a book by reading the back cover or an entire movie from the intro.

You lose that transform power after about 10 minutes into the game and it actually tells you how to use that transform at the first mini-boss at the very start, which is probably about 3 minutes into the game, and about 10-15 seconds if you already know how to play or fight and kill the first few enemies.

Sounds like you just fired them all up and spent longer writing a sentence on each one than actually playing any of them.
DeadlyDav0
Posted 04:00pm 24/12/10
As i already said, i was not writing a review, just my experience and my actual comments regarding darksiders were favourable even though i didnt like it. All i did was run around, kill some crawly things and some flying things before i though 'f this' im gunna go play a shooter.

Assassins creed 2 is a lot better then 1, With 1 I was struggling to finish just because it was so repetitive, But number 2 fixes a lot of the small annoying things that assassins creed 1 had. But unless you have a xbox 360 control you can use might be difficult I imagine.

darksiders was f*****g sweet if you're into hack n slash action rpg's.

basically rips off the fun bits from most of the good ones in the last few years.

occasionally the puzzles get annoying when you just want to get a big combo on a group of mobs but overall was very fun and reasonably long.

Unlikely to be the one you're thinking of.
This one's a action adventure episodic from TellTale Games (Tales of Monkey Island, Sam & Max, Poker Night at the Inventory)
The first ep is $22.50 on steam atm (10% off) and episodes are scheduled to be released over the next ~6 months.

A few games recently on steam have been cheaper on aussies (even in the weeks prior to the xmas sales). Still heaps thats are a rip off for AU though.

Some great games on sale today...

Batman is awesome. I dont really even like many 3rd person games but the flowing combat, stealth missions, characters and unlockables in batman made it really enjoyable and i played it though until finished. I highly recommend this one.

Altitude is a great 2D multiplayer flight game. Simple controls and combat but the teamwork during the soccer game (shoot the ball to your team mates or into the goal to score) opens up a variety of tactics. Lots of fun. My brother is just short of 400hours multiplayer. Dedicated servers, a number of planes and perks, heaps of maps. 18hours played.

I really enjoyed Red Faction Guerilla but it had numerous bugs on PC however the latest patch fixed most of them. From what i experienced and read, you need to ensure you have a beefy PC otherwise the framerate is pretty bad. The gameplay is quite similar to GTA but i had more fun with it and there are a good variety of side missions to break up the story and keep you busy. Really good destruction physics and the weapons are good fun. Red Faction 1 is awesome but old and red faction 2 was terrible.

Splinter cell games are great but can be a little slow paced. I own all of the splinter cell series and its one of the few games ive played through until the finish. Chaos theory is the best IMO, double agent can be a little tricky and conviction is streamlined and has new features but some of the changes are more for console noobs i think (autoaim special ability for example). Really good fun terrorist hunt to play solo or coop in conviction.

Shank is a 2D side scrolling beat em up. I only played the demo and it was good fun but i struggled using keyboard rather than a gamepad (as recommended).
*The game is actually really good even with keyboard, but would probably be better with a controller, but not necessary.* -Thanks Mephz

Flatout is good for the car destruction but not so much as a racer. I really enjoyed ultimate carnage so i just bought the previous 2 games. A number of different modes to keep things interesting. If you liked the destruction in burnout ultimate paradise, you should enjoy flatout. 6hours on Ultimate Carnage.

COD MW2 had a decent singleplayer for the run n gun action but was pretty short and when i was playing multiplayer back around release, the p2p connection was terrible. Im talking 200-400 ping while playing with aussies which meant whoever was host, pwned everybody else. Still hugely popular though. SP - 5.3hours, MP - 28hours

Hope those comments are a little more helpful than my last bunch. The games i havent listed hours played for were non-steam but i finished batman, am getting close to finishing red faction geurilla, finished red faction 1, gave up early on 2, finished chaos theory, half way through double agent, nearly done conviction.

Dude, when i loaded it up im pretty sure they said that a gamepad is strongly recommended. And when i played it using 2 hands on keyboard i really struggled to hit the combos right and kept pressing wrongs buttons (but i can manage just fine playing super meat boy with less buttons required). Im simply passing on what the game devolpers suggest and i agree with them - you probably want to use a gamepad when playing Shank.
darkjedi

Super meatboy also recommends a gamepad, but plays fine with keyboard. You're just bad.
DeadlyDav0
Posted 10:31pm 26/12/10
Please explain why you need a gamepad for super meat boy? Would an analog stick actually make a difference? No.
Super meat boy has 6 keys (up, down, left, right, sprint, jump) and plays fine using keyboard from my experience although i do wish i could have remapped the keys.
Shank, from memory, has about 10 keys (up, down, left, right, jump, grapple, weapon 1, weapon 2, weapon 3, grenade) and i couldnt find a comfortable and effective way to bind them all using keyboard.

Far better than the way you worded it which makes the game sound unplayable unless you have a controller.

Few hours into Shank and Keyboard is flawless. You spam 3 keys (remaped to xyz) and G for grens like any good fps'er and T for grappel. the game ends up being a coordinated mess of button mashing which is what makes it awesome! highly recommend. that said im only 3 levels in but even if it end sin the next 2-3 levels i would still give it a thumbs up for 8 bucks.

Hah, I've still got games from last years steam sale that I've been telling myself I'll play when I get some free time
DeadlyDav0
Posted 01:16pm 28/12/10
I wasnt sure about mirrors edge but im pleased i got it about a year ago. For $5 ive spent at least 5-10 hours on the campaign and the challenge levels and am yet to finish everything. There isnt much to do apart from run and jump but the path you can take from A to B can vary which makes things interesting, the sense of speed as you get to full speed is awesome and the 1st person viewpoint as you jump/slide/roll etc is great and i do get a rush as im running along with enemies chasing me or chasing after somebody. Sometimes i wish the checkpoints were closer together but thats a minor issue. I wish assassins creed was first person viewpoint but thats a biased opinion.

Street Fighter 4 is awesome. Its one of the few games i actually pull out my old, crappy logitech PS2 copycat controller to play. I pretty much only button mash and am not very good even at that but singleplayer, split screen or even online play is a tonne of fun. From my experience i found online play was pretty limited as it was difficult to find a player of similar skill and with a reasonable ping but if you have a mate to play against online, ive heard its awesome. IMO i think they could have gone lower than $15 considering its only a 50% savings and that super street fighter 4 is available but only on console.

And any fan of FPS that hasnt played serious sam needs to. No story just pure run and gun against huge numbers of enemies. For $4 im gunna get it so that i can play thru the original games all over again then try the new HD versions for the 1st time.

I've been thinking of a QGL Super Meat Boy steam group over the past few days

theres a QGL Comps steam group I started for current QGL people to try and hookup for online play given the QGL group is way too big and has many old and unactive players.

Crakaveli - grab this patch for Titan's Quest dude... the game isn't supported by the makers anymore, but the community still updates it themselves

http://www.filefront.com/13847526/TQIT_patch_117a.zip ~60mb

hook me up on Steam if you're keen for a run

I'm running a server here in Aus from time to time.. the name is usually TOG (something something) ;)

Saw an update on steam today, not sure of its old or new, but it now detects your ATI Driver version, and allows you to update via steam.

I recommend Swords and Soldiers HD, I bought it full price but it's on sale for $2.50 it seems.

Solid ~8-10 hours of difficult campaigns, really good fun.

Some great games on sale today...

I agree with CHUB. Swords and soldiers is good fun and for $2.50 it will give you at least 5 hours of campaign which in my books makes it a bargain. However, the game i found doesnt have much strategy to it because units walk at different speeds and each have different cooldown periods so you cant have a bunch of melee units protecting a bunch of range units - its more a matter of earn gold and spam creeps but the 3 campaigns have significantly different units, funny story and dialogue and a variety of campagn missions. 2/3 way thru campaign.

I highly recommend greed corp. Im not very good at RTS (cant micro and i just build 1 unit type instead of strategically building various unit types and assigning them to control groups) but greed corp is simple, fun and quick. Only 5 units/buildings (armoury, harvester, walker, carrier, cannon) but still a variety of tactics and games last 5-15mins which make them great for short game time. 4 campaigns with the same units but each campaign shortens the round time you have to do everything. Starting with unlimited time, then 90 sec, then 75 sec and 60 sec while the AI difficulty also increases. The campaign is a mix of 1v1, 1v1v1 and 1v1v1v1 and i dont think you can play games of 2v2. You can play multiplayer on same PC or internet and i only played 2 games against my brother on same PC in 1v1 but had great fun. For $2.50 ive played at least 5 hours on campaign and have gifted it to a few friends so hope to play more online multiplayer. I only wish a demo was available for people to try this because even as a big shooter fan, i still really, really enjoy this game. 3/4 way thru campaign.

Despite its shortcomings, ive also really enjoyed kane and lynch 2 as well. It does have quite a few flaws: terrible cover system (which will possibly make gears of wars or mass effect 2 fans rage hard), enemies take lots of rounds to die (i dont mind this), shaky handycam style 3rd person viewpoint may not appeal to some (i enjoyed it) and some dodgy friendly AI but to play as a simple shooter, i really enjoy it. There isnt much to do apart from moving thru a linear level and killing everybody along the way but thats my kind of shooter. For $5 it should hopefully provide around 5 hours of campaign and multiplayer is good fun but hardly any aussies online although the bots are decent and should add some extra gametime with a few different gamemodes rather than traditional team deathmatch. 1/2 way thru campaign.

Deadspace is awesome. I generally dislike 3rd person games but this game was pretty unique. Scary enemies, cool way to kill enemies (carefully shoot off limbs to kill em faster than bullets to the torso), some nice levels in outter space with gravity boots and some really good suspense and atmosphere. When i played it, it had really slow and seemingly delayed aiming and the character runs around slowly which are its main problems but apart from that it was great. You also can upgrade weapons/character but have limited upgrades which makes things interesting. Cant wait for sequel coming late Jan. Finished game.

Plants vs zombies is great. Defend your house against incoming waves of zombies in a tower defence kind of way. As levels progress, you get more plants, more zombies and a variety of levels. Heaps of side games to beat. For $4 its awesome and will give you probably 10 hours minimum of play. I only wish a fast-forward button was available to speed up gameplay. Finished campaign and all side games.

Amnesia has great atmosphere and really is genuinely scary. You basically have to get from A to B and solve basic puzzles but lose your mental wits if you see scary stuff or are in the darkness. So the game becomes a matter of scavenging flints to light candles or oil for your lantern while trying to avoid the freaky s*** that goes on and after playing heaps of horror games on PC, i think this has the best atmosphere and random frights. It lacks high tech graphics but the atmosphere and sense of losing your mind are very very realistic. Playing in the dark with headphones should lead to many terrifying experiences. Still going thru.

Ive only played brothers in arms hells highway and really enjoyed it. Rather than using my squad, i did each level as one man which was lots of fun. Effective use of cover but destruction means that your enemies' cover or your own can be destroyed from grenades or fire. Also has a 'suppression' feature where you can force enemies to cower behind their cover and be pinned down if you lay enough rounds in their direction. You have a few different squads from memory including anti-tank and heavy MG which you can easily command with simple 'go here' or 'shoot here' commands and they automatically do the rest. $5 should give you a quality singleplayer campaign of 5-10 hours. Finished game.

Sniper ghost recon is fun but has major flaws. Finished campaign in 5hours and most of it was sniping goodness but terrible enemy AI (shoot a group of enemies 1 by one and they dont notice or react to their dead buddy beside them), super accurate enemy fire (when they do see you they have deadly accuracy when firing full auto from hip at hundreds of metres away), repititive missions (although most are good fun) and when you actually use an assault rifle instead of sniper rifle (the same rifle as your enemies) it has terrible accuracy even aiming down sights and short bursts means its smarter to use silenced pistol even at medium range. Also, the sniper rifle has 'noob mode' where it takes into account breath, wind, gravity and all that and places a little red dot on your crosshair where the bullet will land and this cant be turned off, and worse still you can 'focus' (or whatever it was called) which basically slows down time to let you ensure you hit your target. However, the throwing knives, silenced pistol and pulling off sweet long range sniper shots make this game a tonne of fun despite the flaws. Also, the bulletcam for sniper shoots is cool but plays only approximately 25% of the time and is randomly selected during a sniper headshot and doesnt have rewind/zoom in etc features. Still great when you pull off a logn range headshot on a moving target to watch it in slow-mo. Finished game.

Stalker is awesome. Finished number 1, currently half way thru clear sky (isnt in pack) which is a good game as it improves a bit on the original (gameplay, inventory etc) and im pretty sure the story is a prequel which is cool as you can compare the before and after the environments and areas while also exploring new areas. Cant wait for stalker 3 as ive been told its even bigger than the 1st two and they are huge. As Enska said, the complete mod is meant to be amazing. Improves everything - gameplay, sound, visuals, bugs etc. The game can be tough as you have limited inventory weight and ammo can be scare but cheats or a trainer can fix that if it annoys you. I played part way thru stalker 1 with trainer (unlimited sprint, unlimited ammo, unlimited inventory weight) and when i played thru again without the trainer, it was harder but sooo much more rewarding. Conserving ammo, making the hard choice between which rifle to keep. If you like FPS but are after more of a tactical shooter where you conserve ammo and explore open enviroments (metro 2033 for example) rather than shoot everything thru a linear level (COD), then you should love stalker.

Also, the game has awesome weather pattens, time, environment etc and for $2.50 each game, u get a tonne of hours to play. Probably took me a minimum of 10hrs the 1st game and there are heaps of sidequests for extra money/ammo and stashes to find with goodies. Plus, the game has cool features like freaky animals come out at night and some really suspensful areas to explore with scary s*** going on. A good mix of shooting, exploring and freaky stuff. Highly recommended.

medal of honor, mafia 2 and football manager 2011 are all cheaper steam USA.

If you check page 14 for the daily indie game, ion assault looks alright.

Half life 2 is also 85% off (not 75%) if you own left 4 dead 1 or 2 which makes half life complete (all of half life 1 and 2 and the original team fortress) for only $5.99. Probably the best shooter ever (in terms of gameplay, physics, levels etc) of all time IMO.

Tried swarm arena and didnt think it was anything special but AAAAaaAAAAaaa is good fun and is tough to get a high score.

Bionic commando rearmed is cool if you want old school 2D side scrolling game (think mario or duke nukem style but with grappling hook and sweet coop mode) while the new version i actually enjoyed even though its pretty crap - the combo pack could have gone cheaper IMO.

RE VPN:
My simple understanding (so please correct me if im wrong). Steam has regionalised settings. It sees that we are from Aus and some games in Aus are censored (l4d2), unavailable (GTA collection on steam) or have a surcharge (as set by the developer not steam). So if you use a VPN and purchase from steam USA website (not steam program) you can use credit card, set country and zip code to USA and purchase games that you would otherwise be censored, unavailable or have a rip-off surcharge here in Aus.

As a "PC for life" gamer whose never owned a console, practise practise practise keyboard! When i played Quake 2 as a kid, i used arrow keys for movement and A to aim up and Z to aim down with right control to shoot. Then a few years later Quake 3 introduced me to WASD + mouse then Tribes 2 converted me to ESDF + mouse and ive never looked back. I have a mate who has PS3 and has never gamed on PC but hes racked up a decent amount of time on my PC playing COD 4+5+7 online and greatly improved from a camping noob to a decent player.

Different regions get different prices. Some of these prices are better based on exchange rates so its worth VPNing to get the better prices/games.

heh you're retarded.

Plz tell me why...

If its cause i used only keyboard for Quake 2; i was 8 years old, it was my first shooter, one of my first PC games (wacky wheels, prince of persia and kiddie games like magic mountain are the only others i can remember from back then) and the default keys for keyboard were as i described so i used em. I didnt know any better, i didnt have any friends that played games or older brothers/cousins etc to correct my noobiness and i dont think i even used a mouse back then- my parents had to startup the PC and run the game for me.

Oh, the arrow keys were for forward/back and turn. Strafe was over the left side of the keyboard somewhere so in tough places, i would be on arrow keys and control while my brother would cover aim up/down and strafe. Yes, we were that pro.

Regional pricing. Here in Aus we usually get shafted on the price. Fallout 3 New Vegas for example is usually $89.99USD for anyone in Australia. Americans pay $49.99USD. Meaning we pay an extra $40USD for the exact same thing just because we live in Australia. Fun huh?

also is there any good techniques for learning the keyboard?

Practice practice practice?

The VPN is people using one to get games for cheaper (or to bypass censored content) through the steam store.
As Australia has regionalised pricing, thus tricking steam into thinking you are from a different region to get cheaper or unfiltered games/content.
The VPN is not used once the game is purchased - so no need to worry there.

As for keyboard techniques.
Get used to using mouse + keyboard, eventually it will become instinctual.

Mouse hand will move around to look while keyboard hand does the moving.
Practice looking at something continuously under a crosshair while still moving about. Shouldn't take too long to get the hang of it, it becomes far easier than doing so with consoles.
Applies for both FPS, Third Person and even side scrollers which have a crosshair for example.

A lot of players use "WASD" for movement.
Meaning W = Walk Forward
A = Sidestep or Strafe, Left
S = Step Backwards
D - Sidestep or Strafe, Right.

I rest my middle finger on W, Ring finger on A and Index finger on D.
Middle finger bounces between W for forward or S for backward.

This configuration instead of the arrow keys allows you access to more keys nearby for other actions that a game might require (Use/Lean/Reload/Crouch/Sprint etc.) with minimal traverse distance for the fingers to move :)

Good luck! Once you have mouse you'll never go back :)

+1 for Mephz above.

For BFBC2 (which is a good game to practise your keyboard+mouse skills) consider setting crouch to shift, sprint to control, use to E, jump to space, melee to Q. People have their own combinations which will vary (C for crouch for example but unless crouch can be toggled (which it cant in default bfbc2), that leaves you holding your finger on C which means you cant move right+crouch at same time). Stalker will require a few more keys - PDA, medkit, bandage, map, light, night vision and more which will take a little more time to bind and find a good layout.
Mephz
Posted 03:24pm 02/1/11
It should be mentioned that some people use "ESDF" and even "RDFG" and so on for their movement to allow for even more keys close to their movement fingers.

I still use Space for jump and control for crouch (little finger rests on control and thumb rests on space). On my keyboard that's a very neutral relaxed hand position. It can be very dependent on your keyboard style, shape and extra keys which determines how you decide to bind your keys, as well as which is comfortable for you.
So don't worry about conforming to any standards :)

It should be mentioned that some people use "ESDF" and even "RDFG" and so on for their movement to allow for even more keys close to their movement fingers.

Ive used ESDF since 2001 (tribes 2 release that used ESDF as default) and never looked back. Havent heard of RDFG but i can see its appeal for the extra keys left and right to bind. Might have to give it a crack, thanks mephz.

^ Well realistically you can use anything you like in those configurations along the top. Needs to be the top on most keyboards since the first two rows are more vertically aligned than the bottom two due to the shift key tending to be longer and misaligning them.

Only thing that needs to change is how far across your keyboard is positioned for comfort :)

YGHJ or go home, C for crouch, K for reload, M for use, SPACE for jump (obviously).

Came upon it myself back in Quake before there was any standard.

yer thats heaps easier than wasd, ctrl and r :/

Ctrl feels horrible for crouch, it's one row lower then how my hand sits.

On WASD my pinky naturally sits on Shift.

meh yrs n yrs of cs got my fingers use to shift for walk and ctrl for crouch, everything else feels unnatural

lol.. the steam calculator is handy

Found 71 Games with a value of
$1320.22 USD

Over the sale I have picked up:
2 x indie packs
race 07
gtr evo
oblivion + exp packs
wings of prey
super meat boy
rush
overlord pack
king arthur
crysis warhead
defcon
2 borderlands expansions
greed corp
dogfighter

BC2 was a bargain when it came up - but already had it :(
Also - for those that missed out on new vegas - it can be bought for under $50 from ebay / dungeon crawl - which is where i got it.

greed corp
This game literally overheats my graphics card within ~2 minutes and causes failure.

I can't get my head around why my video card instantly turns into a furnace the moment I load that game up.

thats odd chub - its not that intensive graphically!!
CHUB
Posted 04:06pm 02/1/11
Yeah it's quite simple, small map, not much happening.

I can play more graphically intense games for hours on end no problem.

Load up Greed Corp, start a mission, 2 minutes later a red light blinks on my video card and screen goes blank, heatsink is so BULLS*** hot that you can't even tap it, just an inferno.

Load up TF2 (or any other game, SC2, BC2 etc.) and play that for 5 hours fully maxed, heatsink remains mildly warm to the touch and no video problems.

Your hands must be pretty small for that layout, my left thumb sits over alt, not space. I can see its advantages though and i remember a long time ago some magazine recommended YGHJ but one of the reasons they used was something along the lines of
'7 is reason easy to reach which is good becuase it is commonly the rocket launcher' (this was back in the days of Q3 and UT). Such a pathetic reason.

Greed corp is awesome. Such a simple, fun and addictive strategy game. Too bad its hard to find your friend to play online cause there is no friend feature or invite friend. Still great game.

I'm SADX here, much like WASD except forward and back are moved down one, I find this more comfortable having all my 3 fingers in alignment on A, S and D and just move the middle finger down to go back. CTRL is jump on my pinky and ALT for crouch on my thumb.

thanks for all the tips guys. i am using WASD so far for Zombie Drivers and World of Tanks.
mephz - thanks for your interpretations they were very helpful. i can see now about the ring finger, middle finger etc. makes sense now. i'm starting to get the muscle memory happening so i think i'll stick with that combo for a while. may seem weird to all you PC regulars but i am so used to console controls, i guess it's a matter of retraining your brain for a repetitive task.

I get why with the VPN now also so thanks again to all. i noticed the links were for paid services, do you guys use these regularly and are they ok to pay a monthly bill, IE legit? or do you use the demo aspect to get what you want each time?

about to jump into my games one at a time now for some play just to check them out. I'm enjoying this!

11 hours to go on todays deals. wonder if the wife will notice the CC bill if i get some more ;-)

I've always used

WSAD

Left mouse = shoot
right mouse = jump
space = crouch
shift = secondary fire
left control = walk

Those were my keys through many many many CS maps and onwards.

wasd here. mouse1 is fire, mouse2 reload, x is crouch, space is jump.

I don't get why you'd bother using your pinky for ctrl, I just mash it with the left side of my palm, so much easier.

That being said I hope Neverwinter Nights 2 goes on sale tomorrow if it's a second chance daily. Missed it the first time.

you must have tiny hands. my palm rests on the edge of the keyboard. kinda hard to hit keys with it.

Definately went a little mad this morning with some purchases, but I figure what the hell, they're cheap and there are some classics I've wanted, plus a few that I've had cracked versions previously that I've now legitimized.

Is the GTA 4 pack they have on sale at the moment for $10 censored at all?

I remember something about rockstar games not being available in AUS, but this one is.

Checked steam, its previous GTA games that i think arent available in Aus. Dont know why. Cant remember any censoring with GTA 4 in Aus.

Same here. If a game doesnt have a demo and im not sure, ill torrent it and decide whether to buy or not. Has saved me a tonne of cash i would have spent on games that i played for an hour (even less sometimes) before never touching again. On the other hand there have been plenty of games that i thoroughly enjoyed and have bought in steam and bought for others (greed corp, super meat boy etc).

Lol. I cant remember the last time i actually watched a cutscene or paid attention to the story of a game. Thx 4 correction tho.

According to this ye olde Ausgamers news post, the only changes to the original console release were:

* Street hooker interaction has no options and all the player sees is the car rocking.
* Dead pedestrians don't leave a blood pool.
* Player and pedestrian models don't accumulate bruises/blood patches (no pain skins).

However I seem to recall that the PC version was totally unmodified. This Gamespot article suggests it's uncensored, but I've never really looked close enough at my copy to tell. Regardless - $10 for a metric-crapload of GTA and expansion packs? It's a damned good deal and well worth it if you enjoy the style of game.

Did anyone here play red dead redemption? I'm curious if they censored the scene with the guy f*****g that girl? Seems like something that would have been removed in AU version.

Was the dude a priest, cause that would just be a realistic depiction of church events.

this noob also grabbed Company of Heroes pack!

i keep going back to the store. it's very tempting but hey how many games can a noob play. my 360 will get lonely.

i think i'll save my money for a new mouse. i have the logitech backlit keyboard and i like the keys on it but just a simple old MS basic mouse. What's everyone think of the Logitech G500 for a beginner? and how about wired v wireless? i've gone off wireless a lot recently due to batteries and connection hassles sometimes.

getting the hang of WASD just need my pinky to cooperate it's a bit spaz in these early days. but I'll get there.

I'm all purchased out (read: any more and the missus will kill me when she sees all the "Steampowered" entries on our cc bill). Picked up a couple of copies of uncensored L4D2 to gift to mates and that's about all I can manage.

I am left with a copy of Lara Croft & the Guardian of Light that I grabbed as a gift, but my mate bought it at around the same time :( Anyone want to "swap" it for something of equal value? (by swap, I mean gift something my way in exchange)
