Electronic Arts have released a new statement announcing that they have procured primary publishing responsibilities for the upcoming BioWare MMO Star Wars the Old Republic. The previous arrangement had obligatory Star Wars publisher LucasArts sharing the load.
With this new agreement, certain publishing, marketing and distribution responsibilities previously designated to LucasArts will shift to EA, so that all publishing, marketing and distribution responsibilities can be centralized for efficiency. Lucasfilm will continue serving as a key partner, collaborating on design and marketing, and as a licensor of the property.
It's not clear if this signifies more confidence in the product from EA or less confidence from Lucasarts but at the very least it should make things like media access and organisation of expected beta tests and similar a little simpler.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is due for Windows PC in the first half of 2011.

Dear Lord.. I'm not the biggest fan of EA, I just hope this isn't the beginning of the end for this game :S

Seeing EA own BioWare they already have their hands in the pie for this game anyway. And EA published KOTOR1 and 2 so I can't see this as any difference.

yeah publishing != developing

saying that, EA have the purse strings, so in effect they may have a chance to screw this game up - although im concerned of the state of the current videos anyway

Aside from what has already been mentioned, bioware have clearly raped the game adequately already. The only way EA could possibly make it any worse is by having Jar Jar Binks personally take a s*** down the throat of anyone who buys it.

I read yesterday that it's not even being made in Canada, but out of Texas, so I don't think it's even really related to "normal" bioware beyond building on their previous KotOR game and having a similar narrative style.

Which would be promising for the engine etc as that's where bioware usually falls short, except in the videos it looks s***. :(

Have previously whinged extensively that this hugely promising title looks like crap every time its shown in action. Just came across this video, in which the game actually looks extremely playable, if not even fun!

I think whoever is responsible for cutting their official marketing videos should be shot for using the gumbiest in-game footage possible.

Hrmm, I wonder if that footage is gonna get owned, cos if its from the closed beta the NDA restrictions are REALLY tight, its definitely breaking them. I've been playing the closed beta and about all you're allowed to say is that a closed beta exists, and that you're playing it, and thats it.

lol that footage is from 22 June 2009

Guess it won't get nuked then, but that's so strange, because it looks vastly superior to anything released since.

And Khel, are you allowed to give personal opinions on how playable/smooth the gameplay is? Because that's where it looks weakest usually.

No, they actually expressly forbid giving opinions on the gameplay or even server performance :( Like I said, its harsh.

But, have faith in Bioware, its in good hands.

Ty, will try to remain optimistic then. I really do want to love it. :)
