From the high-profile likes of Solid Snake to the humble experience that is the classic Frogger, Konami has a little something for everyone on Nintendo's forthcoming naked-eye 3D handheld when it releases next March.

"We are delighted to confirm that KONAMI has four major titles in development for Nintendo’s 3DS system,” offered Kunio Neo, President for Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH via press release. "The chance to explore popular franchises such as Metal Gear Solid, Pro Evolution Soccer, Contra and Frogger within a 3D realm is an exciting opportunity, and we cannot wait to share more news in the coming months.”

So yep, MGS, PES, Contra and Frogger. Not a bad start.

I'm pretty stoked on Contra in that announcement - not sure what they could do with Frogger in 3D though...

I'm more excited about MGS.

I don't want to have to wait until March though. :(

It's crazy seeing the contrast of core vs casual support for the 3DS vs Kinect/PS Move. Nintendo, who've found their massive recent success on the back of the casual market and now the ones with the new upcoming device that's now piquing the most core-gamer interest.

Meanwhile, it's previous core-focused opposition are now chasing the casual market and almost forgetting the rest of us exist with their new accessory launches.

Looking forward to a new Contra game. I reckon Contra4 is one of the better games on the DS to date and still play it a fair bit.

I'm just looking forward to the 3DS in general. I hope they release Majora's Mask eventually on it though.

rav, it's very good. Saw varying degrees of the usefulness of it as a gameplay tool, which was probably best exampled through Metal Gear Solid - on rails demo, but with a free look. Things like grass brushing past your face, snakes darting out at you, or dirt kicking up into your eyes as arrows strike the earth around you made it very, very engaging. And it was on par with good 3D movies.

awesome. might be the first hand held i buy (depending on the price) since the original gameboy.

i guess we can look forward to seeing this technology in tvs? or does it only work on smaller screens?

It's expensive. Toshiba are launching a 20" TV with this sort of tech, and it'll be about USD2800.

I haven't read much about how the actual tech works, but when having a crack at the 3DS demos at E3, it seemed like it only worked because you were able to hold the screen at a fixed distance away from your face. If you moved it too far to the side or tilted it etc, the 3D effect would warp - a lot like those lenticular 3d images you can get on things like rulers or posters (though i have nfi if it's that same principle behind the 3DS tech, it's the easiest way to describe how it looks though).

I can't wait for the 3DS, just playing Zelda OoT again in 3D!!! will be enough to buy it.

I had a look at a 3D camera in Japan which had a display on the back the same as the one on the 3DS. It was pretty cool, but it only worked if you looked at the image precisely front-on. I've heard the 3DS is the same.

Here's my guess. There's some sort of mesh type face in front of the screen. Depending on what angle you're on, you'll see a different colour as the mesh cancels one out.

Edit: wow - i got it.
