It seems that at the moment, Gearbox Software can plain do no wrong. Not only did they revive the pronounced-dead-at-the-scene Duke Nukem Forever, and hire a host of the original dev team to continue work on the game, but now they've given the green-light to a fan-made remake of Duke Nukem 3D, codenamed Duke Nukem: Next Gen.
Frederik "Fresch" Schrieber has been working on remaking the original FPS Duke using Unreal Engine 3, and got the go-ahead in just three weeks of announcing the project. In the past, he'd worked on remakes of other infamous games, including Daikitana and SIN. It looks like this one is going to be a winner though.
We have a brief YouTube video of his game in action (though early in development) below.
It's great to see that they gave the ok to this project, instead of s***ting all over it with legal f***tardness like most other dev/pubs would do.
maybe... just maybe companies are learning not to f*** over their biggest fans for the sake of copyright law... this could be the start of a beautiful digital future... or more likely a once off case in a corporate world.
From what I read they were never finished. No reason to assume that this one will either really. It needs a community team like the guys that made the HD texture pack to jump onboard. No way one guy could do this all on his own in a timeframe that the rest of us would give a s*** about.
It's very cool that Gearbox have given their blessing though, really need to see more of that s***.
Except that sonic fan-made thing was just 3d render, not an actual game, so its not like theres actually anything Sega need to worry about s***ting on.
But yeah, kudos to Gearbox for getting behind this instead of stomping on it. They just went up a notch on my Respect-o-meter.
Do we have links to these remakes? Daikitana and SIN
He gave up on the Daikatana remake fairly early because no-one was interested, and I think he got a got a cease-and-desist letter over the Sin remake before it went anywhere. So it'll be interesting if he sees this remake through to completion.
