Want some Star Wars MMO action, but don't want to go near Galaxies? LucasArts and Sony have your fix with the launch today of Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures. Rather than be your traditional 'kill rats' style MMO, this browser based game is all about mini-games aimed at the younger generation of Star Wars fans. Given we're still a little while off the release of Bioware's Old Republic, this might just be enough to tide fans over.
It's free to play, but features a US$5.99/mth subscription option to unlock access to more features and mini-games.
You can check it out and sign up over at
http://www.clonewarsadventures.com/.
It's Windows only at this stage, with no mention of availability for Mac users. More information available on the
game page.

My thoughts?
Loved that they've got what sounds like the entire Clone Wars cast on board to reprise their character's voices, which works really well. Having Anakin or Obi-Wan pop up during a level and give you orders is quite cool, especially considering how well done the voices are. I'd imagine if you're in the target demographic for this game this would be especially awesome. Graphically it looks nice, but won't be giving Crysis a run for it's money anytime soon. The characters look exactly like their counterparts from the Clone Wars show, right down to their lightsaber hilts or costumes.
As for the actual games themselves, I played a Tower Defense style game, the Starfighter one and "Gungan stuntman", which is one of those "how far can you make Jar-jar go before he crashes into the ground" type games. The tower defense & starfighter games were actually quite a bit of fun, although you can tell it's aimed at the younger audiences as they're not really very challenging. Still, I can see me happily playing them for something to do when I've got a bit of spare time.
The downer was that if your internet connection drops or there's a hiccup in the game talking with the servers, you get booted out. Thankfully once you've been through the initial installation/download, getting back in only takes a few moments.
The 'pay to play' aspect takes on two fronts - the "Jedi Knight" monthly subscription, which opens up the higher levels of the mini-games, but also gives you extra games to play. Also appears to be a micro-transaction feature in the form of Sony's Station Credits, which can be used to buy things for your virtual room. Much like Battlefield Heroes or Quake Live though, this is purely optional and there's still quite a lot of free content on offer. I didn't get a chance to fully confirm this though, as the game kept booting me out every few seconds so I've given up for the time being.

Tower defense was great, but I'm a TD junkie, the Starfighter game was nice and arcadey, fast paced with explosions, lots of fun :D
Even tried the typing game which wasn't that bad, kids would enjoy it for a little while at least.
It's Sonystation based which means if you have a station account from previous games, like galaxies, EQ 1 or 2, or any of the other games they do the Sony credits all transfer over.
Basically a whole lot of stuff your kids will nag you to buy costs SC.
Definitely one for the kids, but I'll be going back.
My little one loves the animated series and was getting excited at all the familiar characters, like Jedi said the voice cast seems intact which really adds that extra link, and apparent depth for a kid.
