With all the talk in the last few years about an R18+ rating for video games and more recently the huge debate over the Internet filter, it's pretty cool to have the chance to actually make a difference in these issues with the upcoming election.

While there are obviously many factors that you need to take into consideration when deciding who to vote for, as a gamer and someone that is on the Internet, you might be interested in Electronic Frontiers Australia's handy policy guide which outlines the views of the major parties on these issues. Check it out and be an informed voter!

I already voted this morning. Takes longer then you'd think filling out 60 numbers below the line.

There is a couple of parties that I think should merge, sort out their minor differences and make a force worth voting for.

I.e. "Fishing and Rec" and "Fishing and Shooting" parties are almost identical.
Apart they're both really small, too small to make a real difference. Together they might be able to make something. Sorting out a few not-so-minor issues they could also merge with LDP and maybe even the Sex party.

Greens have become the 4th, Semi-powerful, party that get a bulk of the votes. They wont ever get my vote though.

Hmmm. This is my first year voting, and I'm going to become a Liberal voter. However them not saying anything on R18+ may waiver my vote. Might call up my local Liberal party and ask them.

3 strikes law, as it applies to Internet stuff, is basically a system where after 3 warnings for copyright infringement, you get your Internet access terminated. It is basically something that has come about after lobbying by the media industry as a way to enforce their copyrights by circumventing the normal process (the normal process being, they have to collect evidence of infringement on an IP address, take it to the authorities to get a warrant or whatever to obtain the details of who is using that IP address from the ISP, and then commence civil proceedings against that person for copyright violation).

They want to change it so they can basically run largely automated systems that just plucks your IP out of the air, emails it to the ISP, and then the ISP has to shoulder the burden of policing its users.

You definitely do not want it.

3 copyright infringement notices sent to your ISP by some profit based organisation that justifies it's existence to its customers by the number of infringement notices it sends and you get permanently disconnected from the internets.

If you want to get rid of Steven Conroy, but still vote for Labor, you would need to vote below the line. (Conroy is the guy pushing the Internet Filter)

Yeah I don't think there is anyway it'd ever be implemented, I'd say it made their list just to give you stronger encouragement to vote Greens which is why they didn't mention any of the negative Green policies like recycling old people for compost.

unless you know exactly how your number 1 choice is distributing their preferences and 100% agree with that allocation not voting below the line is all kinds of retarded.

so no, please, do not listen to this clown and everybody vote below the line.

for more info on how candidates in your electorate will be distributing their preferences check out this handy site:

Did you know that ALP and Democrat voters helped elect Steven Fielding of the Family First Party to the Senate in 2004?

They may not have intended to but that's what happened when they voted above the line in the Senate. When you vote above the line, you're letting that party determine the way you vote and their preferred vote may not be what you expect. The only way to be completely sure that your vote goes the way you want is to check where your party's preferences are going and if they're not going the way you want then vote below the line.
