The Child's Play Charity is getting some serious love around the globe at the moment, and most recently, it has become the focus of a team of Team Fortress 2 players, all wielding Golden Wrenches, in a bid to raise some serious cash for kids in need.

So what are these brave virtual soldiers offering to do with their uber-melee weapons? Toss them, that's what. 10 Golden Wrench-swinging cats have pledged to destroy their golden tools in exchange for donations to the charity, and have so far managed to raise more than US$10,000. That's pretty good given the turmoil around this weapon when it was first dropped in-game, and the fact there were only 100 ever made available.

If you want to know more about this good deed, look no further than the official page set up by the idea man himself, WingspanTT.

WOW that's awesome of them. Very brave thing to do to lose a golden wrench.
There is a post on http://www.teamfortress.com/ about it as well.

This is really cool thing to do. BTW the site says only 8 wrenches.

From the site
So far, this movement has gained the support of thousands, including 10 other Golden Wrench owners who have chosen to join me and delete their gold-plated playthings for charity.

He's referring to the TF2 site:

On August 31st WiNGSPANTT and 7 other Golden Wrench owners will commit a nigh unutterable act of brazen item-aggression so egregious that we shudder to think of the implications should the Administrator herself catch wind of it.

On that day 8 Golden Wrenches will be destroyed.

It's not like the wrench has any practical use or busted their balls to vanquish the dragon of Quendor to get one, the thing just dropped out of the sky. If they're willing to give up something cool and unique in exchange for making sick kids lives a little less miserable then the good on 'em & well done!

so there is an overpowered weapon in tf2 that you can get if your lucky enough an people are giving it away (read: not going to use it - not really having it taken away from them by valve or anything) the more thats donated?

jesus what the f*** is wrong with you.

The fact that money can be raised in this way for a charity is awesome. end of story.

When you toss it, it's gone.

The cynic in me reckons that this is a calculated move... They destroy something for charity, Valve either gives them some kudos or rewards them with another cool item.
But then, it IS raising funds for a charity regardless.

Its not about deleting a wrench, its about raising money for a good cause.
I agree, the wrench means nothing. You should be focusing on the charity, not the wrench

i lolled at the dude that posted a thread on the steam forums asking for a gold wrench since he was wasting his money by donating.

makes me wonder how many people have donated because theyre hoping to get something from valve in return.

some guy also said he'd donated a $1000 to the charity if valve game him a wrench.
I doubt he'd do it though

Same with colouring your hair or shaving your head, it's pointless because the colour fades or your hair grows back but who gives a flying rats ass how people raise money for charity as long as they do it. I suppose you're one of those kids who dress in uniform on dress casual day at school just so you don't have to pay the $2 for charity because you say to yourself why the f*** should I pay $2 when I can wear whatever I want for free on the weekend.

I rekon valve will give the people who destroy a golden wrench something special in an update, like the Halo but cooler.
