Warner Bros have
announced a new Mortal Kombat game - continuing the current extremely annoying trend of these remakes/reboots/new editions to just use the same name as the original, it is called Mortal Kombat:
The newest chapter of the iconic fight franchise marks a triumphant return to the series mature presentation and a reinvention of its classic 2D fighting mechanic. Driven by an all new graphics engine, the fan favourite Fatality is back and presented in more gory detail than ever before. In addition, Mortal Kombat introduces a number of new game-play features including tag team and the deepest story mode of any fighting game. Players can choose from an extensive lineup of the game's iconic warriors and challenge their friends in traditional 1 vs. 1 matches, or take on several new game modes.
The trailer shows off a little bit of cinematics as well as a stack of in-game action, including a bunch of typically awesome and gruesome fatalities.
You can check out the trailer below
or download it right now. For those that have to have their trailers in HD, there's a gigantor
580mb HD version available for download as well. I'm sure more information will be available at E3 so stay tuned!

the only reason this will lose is from having a limited number of characters. needs to be like armageddon with 50+ characters to chose from.

That looks pretty awesome for MK standards.
I just don't dig their animations for some reason, yeah they're fluid and s*** but the style weirds me out.

I had no gripes with what they did with Street Fighter 4. In fact, all of the newer MK games have been pretty different to the originals, so this is looking like it actually will be a change. Looks like it's going back to its roots, which it strayed too far from, imo. Looks like they're taking it in the right direction.

Agreed, plus how awesome does the arena look in that one.
Loving the return to 2D and classic characters, makes this the first MK since 4 I'm looking forward to. The gore is indeed a welcome return, but needs way more blood for that classic MK feel!
Can't believe we have to wait till 2011 for this :(

But yeah, I went off MK when it started becoming more free-form and multiple fighting styles and stuff, I mean I still played them, but it didn't really feel like MK anymore, and I never really got hooked on any of them. Ironically, the MK game that has felt most like MK to me recently was the DC vs MK game, I really enjoyed that. The PG rating and weak ass fatalities kinda sucked, but it was a fun game and was more like traditional MK.

they were one of these companies that would buy smaller gaming studios only to f*** up and shut them down, they bought one in australia and shut it just 4 months later

game was fun, but the pg rating f***** ruined it and the fact that they had maybe 8 characters made the game enjoyable for maybe a week.

Interesting tidbit I didn't know is that in 1994 Daniel Pesina, who played Johnny Cage (the guy in that video), and Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile, Smoke, etc... (which are just palette swaps of the same costume) got fired because he did an ad for another (failed) fighting game as Johnny Cage:
What a douche for doing that, if you didn't already pick up on him being a douche from that video I posted. Anyway that's why MKIII didn't have all his characters in it. I think this has a lot to do with why the MK stories always have Johnny Cage being killed off.

and, regarding fatalities
I love the approach they're taking with it, it sounds like they're really committed to delivering an awesome, oldschool MK experience. It sounds like they aren't going to have some of the more silly stuff like friendships and babalities, but this quote still drove home to me the passion and vision they have for making it awesome:
