Warner Bros have announced a new Mortal Kombat game - continuing the current extremely annoying trend of these remakes/reboots/new editions to just use the same name as the original, it is called Mortal Kombat:
The newest chapter of the iconic fight franchise marks a triumphant return to the series mature presentation and a reinvention of its classic 2D fighting mechanic. Driven by an all new graphics engine, the fan favourite Fatality is back and presented in more gory detail than ever before. In addition, Mortal Kombat introduces a number of new game-play features including tag team and the deepest story mode of any fighting game. Players can choose from an extensive lineup of the game's iconic warriors and challenge their friends in traditional 1 vs. 1 matches, or take on several new game modes.
The trailer shows off a little bit of cinematics as well as a stack of in-game action, including a bunch of typically awesome and gruesome fatalities.

You can check out the trailer below or download it right now. For those that have to have their trailers in HD, there's a gigantor 580mb HD version available for download as well. I'm sure more information will be available at E3 so stay tuned! promoted/edited forum item

sick, team battle looks good.

the only reason this will lose is from having a limited number of characters. needs to be like armageddon with 50+ characters to chose from.

That looks pretty awesome for MK standards.

I just don't dig their animations for some reason, yeah they're fluid and s*** but the style weirds me out.

Just watched it again, that Johnny Cage fataility where it does the CSI zoom in and shows the internal organs getting pulverised and bones breaking is so damn sweet. And the Kung Lao one where hes dragging Sub-Zero towards his spinning hat is classic MK awesomeness. I just hope they're actually going for an adult rating with this one, and as such don't hold back on the gore. MK should not be pitched at a PG level.

agree. the last one was f***** horrible, and only had like 8 characters....

MA rating with 50+ characters pls WB

Wow, that looked awesome. That was pretty much Mortal Kombat 2 and 3 made 3D. So many recognisable arenas and characters. F*** yeah, I'm pumped for this.

all these games need to develop their character lists imo, the last few tekkens, mk's, street fighters etc have all just upgraded the graphics a bit, added no new modes or anything interesting and have maybe added 1-2 new characters in.

I am fine with just the classic characters actually, I actually lost interest in the MK games with more characters, a lot which were just variants of the existing characters or robot version, etc...

I had no gripes with what they did with Street Fighter 4. In fact, all of the newer MK games have been pretty different to the originals, so this is looking like it actually will be a change. Looks like it's going back to its roots, which it strayed too far from, imo. Looks like they're taking it in the right direction.

If you're hanging out for some old school MK, check the PSN marketplace. Ultimate MK3 is on the Xbox Live marketplace, and I'd imagine its probably on the PSN one as well.

Agreed, plus how awesome does the arena look in that one.

Loving the return to 2D and classic characters, makes this the first MK since 4 I'm looking forward to. The gore is indeed a welcome return, but needs way more blood for that classic MK feel!

Can't believe we have to wait till 2011 for this :(

I didn't really like MK4 that much, from what I remember. That's the one where they first introduced the different fighting styles and all that. While I remember it being kind of cool in MK: Deception, I don't remember it feeling very good back then. MK3/Ultimate was the last MK game I got truly excited for. This one looks like it's shaping up to be the next.
Khel
Posted 07:52pm 12/6/10
Nah, MK4 didn't have different fighting styles, it was the first 3d one (and the last one to show up in arcades). It was the one where they introduced weapons and it had hilarious bone breaker moves.

But yeah, I went off MK when it started becoming more free-form and multiple fighting styles and stuff, I mean I still played them, but it didn't really feel like MK anymore, and I never really got hooked on any of them. Ironically, the MK game that has felt most like MK to me recently was the DC vs MK game, I really enjoyed that. The PG rating and weak ass fatalities kinda sucked, but it was a fun game and was more like traditional MK.

So I'm curious, I just had a look at the press release and noticed this "Mortal Kombat is being developed by the newly re-named NetherRealm Studios", so if they are newly renamed, what developer did they used to be? Seems like they exist now purely to make Mortal Kombat games though, cos their name and their logo are very MK specific.

game was fun, but the pg rating f***** ruined it and the fact that they had maybe 8 characters made the game enjoyable for maybe a week.

I used to be really fascinated with how Mortal Kombat was made, I had the magazine these scans are from; http://www.huguesjohnson.com/scans/mk2-behind-scenes/

Interesting tidbit I didn't know is that in 1994 Daniel Pesina, who played Johnny Cage (the guy in that video), and Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile, Smoke, etc... (which are just palette swaps of the same costume) got fired because he did an ad for another (failed) fighting game as Johnny Cage:

What a douche for doing that, if you didn't already pick up on him being a douche from that video I posted. Anyway that's why MKIII didn't have all his characters in it. I think this has a lot to do with why the MK stories always have Johnny Cage being killed off.

IGN have a writeup about the new MK game, its playable at E3 apparently, and its sounds SO F*****G AWESOME. Man, I want this game right now. Some bits of the preview that stood out for me:

Yes, the team have modeled each character's insides for the X-Ray attacks, and the result looks great. Because hey, when Johnny Cage goes to town on an opponent's bathing suit area (an actual move), or Sub Zero reaches into an enemy's chest to freeze then shatter their liver (also an actual move – bless this game), you want their insides to look their best.

and, regarding fatalities

A few that stood out – Mileena ripping the head off Nightwolf then drinking blood from it, Sektor firing off multiple rockets at Kung Lao who explodes into several big chunks, which are then each targeted by rockets leaving little but a fine red mist, and Scorpion slicing Cage at the waist then neck, leaving him still standing, before kicking out his mid-section. So good.

I love the approach they're taking with it, it sounds like they're really committed to delivering an awesome, oldschool MK experience. It sounds like they aren't going to have some of the more silly stuff like friendships and babalities, but this quote still drove home to me the passion and vision they have for making it awesome:

"Certainly this Mortal Kombat game we're taking a little bit more seriously, so we're probably not going to have a friendship move and whatnot," says Ed, "but if we were to do something like that we're definitely not going to document it. That's what I think was part of the fun of the old games. 'You turned the guy into a baby!' What? Or, 'you pulled out a rainbow'! What the? It's such an odd thing. We really want these events – if they happen – to be almost rumors. That's a big part of what Mortal Kombat was. The question mark about - what else is in this game?"

Sounds like they'll make it so that the code to the secret finishing moves is random, and maybe the finishing moves are random too, to the point where some will be very rare to happen.
