Legendary Pictures have picked up the option to adapt a film based on BioWare's critically acclaimed Mass Effect series, and are going ahead with the project in what looks to be an ASAP capacity. BioWare founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeshuck will executive produce the film, alongside Mass Effect 2 director Casey Hudson. Scripting duties are being looked into by I Am Legend penmen, Mark Protosovich, while Marvel Pics' Avi Arad is likely on board to produce.
There's no denying the series is rich in imagery, imagination and story, but translating the free-form conversation and dynamic decision-making of the game is definitely an arduous task. I doubt it would at all be broached, leaving a major gap in any form of true adaptation.
Still Legendary haven't done us too wrong with the likes of 300 and The Dark Knight under their belt, so we'll just have to wait and see. (I wonder if Martin Sheen will play the Elusive Man?)

Um, yeah there's already an awesome TV show that has pretty much the same general story (big bad ancient and unknown enemy coming from the edges of space to repeatedly kill off races when they mature, humans trying to form an alliance, alliance based in central citadel/ship, tough human commander guy, jump gates, etc):

(seriously, best TV show ever - also why I liked the original Mass Effect so much!)

Basically draw out an overarching plot, then air 2-3 episodes. At the end of the run have a couple of major choices that need to be made by the characters. Have the fans vote as to what choices are taken, then adapt the the story to suit the choices with the most votes, rinse and repeat and see where the series takes you.
That'd be pretty sweet, except it would probably be expensive and slow.
