Facebook have unveiled 0.facebook.com - a version of the site that is free traffic on mobile devices.
It's free: Thanks to the help of mobile operators we collaborated with, people can access 0.facebook.com without any data charges. Using 0.facebook.com is completely free. People will only pay for data charges when they view photos or when they leave 0.facebook.com to browse other mobile sites. When they click to view a photo or browse another mobile site a notification page will appear to confirm that they will be charged if they want to leave 0.facebook.com
Australia is not in the current list, but there's a footnote at the bottom that says "Soon, 0.facebook.com will also be available from the following operators: Telstra in Australia..." - indicating that Australians on (some?) Telstra mobile services will soon have unmetered access to Facebook.

That's pretty good news for Telstra-based Facebook readers, though note you will still get charged if you view any photos - thus making the whole thing somewhat less useful. ( Don't forget to 'Like' us! on Facebook!@#)

Good news for Facebook addicts but even better news is that a site like FB can get an archaic monopoly like Telstra to offer something for free!@%

wouldn't the majority of bandwidth use on facebook be viewing photos/embedded vids/other media? and this doesn't appear to cover that?

It might not be if they can make it draw the data from this new site?

Do Telstra do that thing where they charge for air time as well as data while you are using the phone on the interwebs?

Could be some nasty, nasty bills if they pimp free FaceBook and people are unaware that free data may not == free air time.

does facebook really use that much data that anyone would care if it were free or not?
I never use my 1GB per month and I think I'm a heavy user?

How often are you using 3G tho? I'm on my phone's internet a fair bit, but usually within range of wi-fi.

Have not seen any mention of air time and all their data usage T&Cs just say x number of megabytes per month.

Nah, they don't. I don't think any mobile provider has ever done that, seems pretty retarded.

What's the point? Anything but images would just be text right? A saving of a few KB a day?

I suppose there's the java games but they don't really translate well to a phone unless there's a native app for them.

Pretty sure parabol was saying earlier that data usage counted as air time on Voda?
