Steam for Mac is now available to download. You'll get Portal free with it too if you haven't already purchased it. You can download the client now
locally from AusGamers (11mb).
Steam for Mac Released
Steam is now available for the Mac. Read what the press has to say, and what other gamers are saying. Or just download Steam now.
Steam has been a service exclusively for PC users since we launched it in 2004. For the first time we and our partners are bringing it to another platform. It's been a ton of work, but the Mac is great for the same reason the PC is great - they are both open systems that let gamers and game developers be as close as possible.
So check it out. If you have a Mac and are new to Steam, welcome! If you've been with us since the beginning, borrow a Mac and log into your Steam account and jump into a game. And for everybody, Portal is free from today until the 24th.
It's pretty slick, but pretty much a clone of the Windows version. All my games appeared (CS: S, HL2 etc). DOwnloading them on ADSL1 :(

Update: Plasma helpfully pointed out that
Portal, Valve's critically acclaimed puzzle/FPS game, is
available for FREE until May 24th. This is a great deal and will offer Mac users an awesome taste of Steam gaming on their platform, so make sure you encourage your Mac using friends to check it out.

Apparently you need to go out of your way to make it case sensitive?

Playing on a current model MacBook Pro with 4Gb of RAM - Download of portal was 3.8Gb total in size - loading times are a bit lame to load into the game, but once its in there it seems like everything runs fine.
Just playing on default settings for the moment - will test some more when I get home.

This is one thing that really impressed me... I imagine most publishers would be d**** and lock a license to a platform. It's also good since it will allow me to install steam + all my games on my Hackintosh so friends can come over and use it for LAN fun. While it's no beast, with its Core 2 Duo E7300, 2gb Ram and GeForce 9800gt; it can easily run any source game looking quite nice.
Hold on tight dude; a Linux version is only a month away.

I remember when games were made properly by devs who care and all you needed were the files from your CD and a linux native binary downloaded from the dev's website. Ahh the good old days when games used a REAL rendering engine, opengl (or even better, 3dfxgl). F*** direct x and the horse it rode in on.

I can't see why not, the only games I had issues with under wine was GTAIV and that was due to all the bulls*** DRM.

*yay* uninstall.

If you still have issue with busy servers or downloads not happening just restart Steam.
