The update to the Steam client user interface that has been in beta for a while has finally gone live:
The new Steam UI is here, which enhances the way you already buy and play games, adding more info about the things that matter — getting games, playing them with friends, and staying current in the gaming world.
If you haven't already updated, you can use the "Check for Steam client updates" option on the "File" menu to automatically update Steam to the new release. If you don't have Steam installed, download it today.
The full list of changes is detailed on the
official Steam site, detailing the various changes to friends handling, achievements, news, and game library management (amongst others).

Yeah, it's taken a while to catch onto managing audio properly (i.e., software mixing). Windows is slowly slowly getting there with individual volume controls for each application. It's not enough though.

I like how it shows you waht games your friends can play with you (not what games your friends ARE playing). I'm talking about when you have 2-3 mates over and you think 'what game do we all have?'. Thats an awsome feature.

For anyone having my problem, you'll have to disable Frey's filter before launching/updating the new Steam. After you have the new version up and running fine, you can then enable the filter again.

I've been using this skin, which I think is a bit more sleek than the default UI.

Haha, by implementing the ability to categorise games before friends i'm guessing Valve thinks that steam users have more games than friends?

I like it though.

Stupid question but why would your voice output audio device be different to your game audio output device? If they're both the same why not, in the windows "playback devices" menu just tick the device you want and set it to default? Surely steam would just use the windows default device?
I got on the new UI beta as soon as it came out I think. I hated it at first but it's grown on me, the one thing that bugged me in the beta was that it would constantly start up in the store tab when I clearly set it to the games tab. Hopefully that's now fixed else there's gonna be mutiny.
That and every time steam updates itself I have to tell windows not to hide its icon :@

I prefer to wear a single sided headset for voice & mic, then use speakers for game sound. Same as what the 360 does I believe.

edit: weird - it hadn't updated properly. 2nd time I started it THEN it did the update and now I see the non-IE browser. Maybe I had an old update pending or something.
