More good news about another free game release today as MekTek announced that Microsoft have given the all-clear for the free release of MechWarrior 4:
If you've been following the drama surrounding the free release of Mechwarrior4, than you would be aware that the initial announcement, made last summer, was a bit premature. After nearly a year since the announcement came, MekTek Studios is pleased to announce, that Microsoft Legal has given the all clear for the free release of Mechwarrior4. This hallmark movement by Microsoft Games couldn't come at a better time, as the Mechwarrior community is attempting a rebirth, amidst announcement of a Mechwarrior Reboot. Thank you Microsoft.

A few weeks ago we stuck our neck out and announced that our studio was struggling to see this release through to the end. We also released our MekPak 3.1, through our distribution and patching system MTX, which gave our developers an opportunity evaluate any unknown bugs. We're glad our announcement and release worked, and we have many to thank for raising awareness, as the release of Mechwarrior4 is now imminent.
The latest release of their MekTek mod also landed a couple weeks ago; if you've still got Mech4 kicking around you might want to try it out.

as much as i did like mw4... big deal! they try n make it sound like it's something special that they are going to give a 10 year old game away for free. id games are usually open-source after 10 fkn years!@# ;p everyone got bored waiting for it when it was anounced LAST YEAR imo... won't be holding my breath for the ACTUAL release :P

This thread is now about John Carmack appreciation <3

I'm with demon... while it's awesome that they're doing this, it shouldn't be such a big deal.

I think it's a big deal, because of the following awesome graph that I just generated with made-up numbers:

Each one company that releases a free game means everyone else gets to see what an amazing PR move it is, especially when trying to promote a new product in the series. The more that get the idea that it's a good move, the more free games we'll get!

I'll be grabbing this when it comes down the pipe, I cant seem to see any timeline though... so i'm not going to hold my breath.

yeh sure but i think you'll find that this graph clearly indicates that carebears fall off exponentially until no one gives a s*** anymore ;D

demon, the decline in your series is not exponential, care bear destruction appears quite constant over time.

Who cares if it's being released this year instead of last year!

MekTek have also updated the engine to support WIDESCREEN!!!

Is a good game the really needs a modern update for PC. Co-op would be brilliant.

mech games were my favorite games ever, right behind RTS anyway

awesome linking/local download linking skills in the OP too, mad props
on the file details page, can we have the file size appear in a more friendly way?

function fs($fs)
{
$bytes = array('KB', 'KB', 'MB', 'GB', 'TB');
// values are always displayed in at least 1 kilobyte:
if ($fs <= 999) {
$fs = 1;
}
for ($i = 0; $fs > 999; $i++) {
$fs /= 1024;
}
return array(ceil($fs), $bytes[$i]);
}

zomg he's right, it's a good thing we'll never need any more than 9600 baud

It's specifically like that so users can verify their downloads are complete to the byte level

I might try and drop in a converted field for those that can't do simple maths in their heads later

why not give an md5 so users can can do that check, instead of byte-count?
then just display what more people are interested in more of the time - the actual file size

For those trying to get MW4 but can't, here's a link to grab the torrent file being used by MekTek to distribute the free version:

http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?s=a4e7e26be0d089903978c738fe0c9434&p=29767306&postcount=25. 1.74gb and you'll need the Mek Tek installer linked in trog's original post the install it.

i emailed them about mirroring but no reply and I lost interest; the net i just full of people complaining about how hard it is to get the game because of their silly lets-reinvent-the-wheel installer. Bit of a shame; reducing accessibility reduces the # of people that are going to enjoy it.

Simple math, yeh ... but f*****g annoying to have to do every time I go to download a file from you guys.

Websites use MB, GB etc to quote download size - its what we call a (de facto) standard. Chewing out your user for suggesting you use a standard isn't very nice.

And backhanded his math (and anyone who agreed with him).

Just didn't look cool IMO to turn a simple suggestion into an attack, teq seemed to be trying to be genuinely helpful. You need this sort of feedback to run your website.

This is more feedback, offered for free, try not to trog-smash me for it :)

boring conversation anyway.. CHEWIE WE'RE GONNA HAVE COMPANY!

FTR, first time in more than 10 years anyone has made this suggestion, so you will understand if I find it a bit weird. Even newbs don't seem to have problems with it so I find it weird that tech savvy people do. And also as I said, I'll do something about it anyway.

edit: if you have further feedback please use our feedback forum to prevent further derail of this topic. My bad for not saying that first up.

FTR, this has secretly annoyed me for a long time, I just never found the right time to bring it up. I do the math in my head but would much prefer not having to :D

I don't even bother doing the math, I just look the numbers in front of the front comma and use that as a ballpark for the file size. Not exact, but close enough, and easy. Can't say its ever really bothered me.

I forgot how much fun Mechwarrior is!

Such glorious goodness in stomping around smashing things up.
