Blizzard have given us a space-faring heads up regarding a special edition release for the hotly anticipated StarCraft 2. According to the mega RTS/MMO giant, the special edition will retail for AU$149.95 and NZ$199.95 and will only be available at retail. It includes:
  • The Art of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, a 176-page book featuring artwork from the game
  • An exclusive 2GB USB flash drive replica of Jim Raynor's dog tag, which comes preloaded with the original StarCraft and the StarCraft: Brood War expansion set
  • A behind-the-scenes DVD containing over an hour of developer interviews, cinematics with director’s commentary, and more
  • The official StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty soundtrack CD, containing 14 epic tracks from the game along with exclusive bonus tracks
  • StarCraft comic book issue #0, a prequel to the comic series
  • A World of Warcraft mini Thor in-game pet that can be applied to all World of Warcraft characters on a single Battle.net account
  • Exclusive Battle.net downloadable content, including special portraits for your Battle.net profile, decals to customise your units in-game, and a visually unique version of the terran Thor unit
That's a pretty sweet load of gear. The standard edition will retail for AU$99.95 and NZ$129.95, but will be available for online purchase through the Blizzard store.

So for an extra $50 over the standard edition you get all that? not into star craft but that sounds like a good deal to me.

What's awesome is that its a valuable, worthy extras edition without removing content from the regular game.

Pay attention other devs & publishers, this is why Vivendi-Acti-Blizzard is awesome and you are jerks.

EDIT: Removed profanity, this is a srs news post after all.

Hopefully when they release the online pricing its a bit more reasonable and they don't try pull the Activision/Steam damn near criminal act of upping US prices just cause we are aussies. That been said if this game is all its cracked up to be $100 is prolly worth it.

Blizzard don't really call the shots on this stuff anymore imo. They'd need to make a case to their corporate overlords, its just that "Tghe Blizzard Way" has been a license to print money for a long time so they have more clout.

They would probably be the key guys shouting down the evil suits who want to rape our pockets though.

Updated my pre-order this morning. Funnily enough, it was more the fact this is a Blizzard CE box that triggered me to do it. I didn't look at what's in it until well afterwards :)

Speaking of which.. I still need to find myself a copy of the original WoW CE box set (sans pet codes.. those things are worth a mint) to complete the collection, as I don't think they did a Frozen Throne one - Did they?

Do you mean frozen throne as in the War3 expansion, or Wrath of the Lich King for WoW? Cos they did one for Wrath

Steve: where did you get those prices from?

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will be available on DVD-ROM for Windows® XP/Windows Vista®/Windows® 7 and Macintosh®. The standard edition will sell for a suggested retail price of $59.99 and will also be available shortly after release as a download through the online Blizzard Store. The special Collector's Edition package, which is priced at $99.99 and will only be available at retail stores, will include the following bonus items in addition to the game disc:

$100AUD and $150AUD for the standard and collector's edition respectively is a bit of a price discrepancy. Did they actually announce AUD prices?

Are we paying the same price as Americans if we buy the game online through the blizzard store ?
Hogfather

100 / 0.85 = 117 + shipping.

I was happy to give EB 30 bucks above the conversion to lock in a copy rather than wait and potentially miss out.

i buy games to play the game, not for all the fancy little toys that come along with them.

^^ I'm of the same mind.

Little extras are nice and this one seems worth the cashola for the collectors, but I'm not a big fan of that stuff.

How they sell through the blizzard store should be interesting., ie regional pricing and if direct download is possible.

It made sense in my head, but yeah I meant the War3 expansion. Pretty sure they didn't do a TFT CE box (I've got the wrath one).

Yeh I do agree in general - I just have the CE of WoW and all the expansions so I am building a bit of a collection, don't feel like I can stop now! :(

If the special edition added LAN co-op then I'd consider buying it. Maybe they'll consider it for Diablo 3...

I've got all the WoW box sets, but I dunno if I really want the Starcraft ones, tbh the thing that appeals to me most in that collector's edition is the thing which isn't even part of Starcraft 2 (the wow pet), and i'm not sure thats a particularly good reason to shell out the extra $50 - $60 for the collector's one.
Storm
Posted 09:49pm 09/4/10
I'd use the USB stick, but none of the other nonsense. Khel, wanna go halfsies in it? (or better yet find somebody who wants the comic/soundtrack and go thirdsies!)

edit to clarify:
halfsies/thirdsies on the extra 50 bucks; still 1 other would have to buy the regular edition....

I finally got a key for myself a few weeks back but I do have a friend who would love to get one. He used to do 2's with me and generally takes his gaming pretty seriously so he would make good use of it. ie: not load it up play 2 games and realise its not his cup of tea and just throws it away.
