Modern Warfare 2 Free Weekend on Steam

The Steam website has announced that Modern Warfare 2 will be free to play on Steam this weekend. If you haven't had the chance to check out this game (you know, because there's no demo version) or you haven't bought it already (which seems statistically unlikely) then this is your chance!

You can start pre-loading it now, so fire up Steam to start the bits flowing.

No dedicated servers - no purchase! Surprisingly a lot of PC gamers (outside of QGL) I know also share this sentiment too.. I'll stick to BC2 for now with it's awesome dedicated serverness.

Indeed, I just can't get into BC2, too slow, too annoying, too console. Pity cuz it has dedi servers.

kirkoswald - single player is meant to be awesome and it's only 8 hours long. it's like a cool demo, if you have the downloads to spare, I'd say jump on this hoe like she's clean.

I have fun on multiplayer, if there is only one cheater (who is making it obvious for everyone else) .. I count that as a win, better one than two ! ... you generally find the hackers cant beleive it when they get killed so they probably insta-complain in the text chat .... spot them out .... shame them out!

I finished it on hard in around 5 hours. Would of done it sooner but there are a few parts they intentialy made bulls*** hard just to keep you stuck and lengthen playtime.

If I bothered it would only be to play a coop game with H@MMER cause some of the challenges in single player.
Similarly, I'm disappointed that BC2 doesn't have the option for local servers.

I'm looking forward to the DLC for the PC, so it would have been nice if that was out already. The only downside to MW2 so far for me is no custom maps and no ability to votekick.

Can you sort by ping yet in BC2? Can you join a friends game yet?

Apparently a ridiculously high number of people shelled out another $20 for the "stimulus package" map pack, so we can all look forward to being charged for remade maps from now on...

How can you prefer cod6 over BC2? It is pretty much the same s*** but BC2 has dedicated servers, destructible environments, and kickass vehicles.

Though besides maybe cod2 all cods are s*** and for f*****s.

You forgot how awesome not having any kind of team balancing in BC2 is and how awesome it is to have a team of 4 people spawn raped by a team of 12 people and just how awesome not having any kind of decent server browser or friends system it is. Oh yeah BC2 is just so f*****g awesome it's awesomely not funny.

It's kinda the point of dedicated servers to have a central, peered, server point for low pings right? BC2 does that well, however when you can't even find the servers because ping=??? and needing to type case sensitive names to find a host? Seriously, WHY? I just want a game I can jump in and play with a few friends, I don't want to spend half an hour coordinating which server to join.

Yes, BC2 is good for having dedicated servers so 10 out of 10 for style, but minus several million for good thinking.

I spend about 15 seconds searching for servers, usually via history or my friends list. It's not that difficult at all, but people will always find something to complain about.

The case sensitive search & not being able to filter on ping is dongs but after doing 2 searches for Australia and australia and adding a bunch of servers to my favourites list it takes bugger all time to get into game.

What drugs have you been smoking? How is it my fault there's no auto team balance? How can I control the fact that d***wads change to the winning team and then sit outside the spawn of the other team and shoot them as soon as they spawn? Yeah you're probably one of those idiots who sits outside spawn because you're too s*** at the game to get a kill any other way. How about you go throw yourself out the window. noob.

I was originally gonna buy it for sure... then wasnt when i heard about the lack of dedicated servers.... Then i just got it anyway cos i was bored :P

So the deal is... Sure, dedicated servers would be much better. You often get the host leaving mid game and s*** hosts with no bandwidth or games that just close before they start...

But its also COD6 and one thing they do have is the numbers playing. I've been able to find games 24/7 since i got the game. Theres ppl playing now and ppl playing at 4:20am.

As far as the game goes the guns are awesome. All the classics like A4A1, UZI, m16, ak47, mp5, p90, etc, etc. I thought the gameplay in BC2 beta was horrible by comparison.

The rounds are short and sweet, the maps flow really well so theres always action and theres a lot of stuff to unlock.

Just wanted to say this to ME, really, before buying. If you really wanted to play it but thought it would be unplayable... Well... 90% of the time it plays perfectly and its really pretty fun. Rip off price tho.

Had I read this thread in time I still wouldn't have bothered. The no ded servers is a big deal, and bfbc2 is still a lot of challenging fun so there's no need to bother with something else unless people were raving about it as significantly better.

Even if everyone on the planet was playing at 4:20am it wouldn't change the fact that dedicated servers would significantly improve the gameplay experience. Lower latency, more consistent latency (i.e. the average player's mum sending an email on her laptop won't lag everyone out), more reliable servers, centralised servers that you can regularly join.

Of course this doesn't affect nor anger console players as much. Their in-game movements are already lagged and compromised by having to use a controller in an FPS (lulz).

Yeah I've noticed some servers are starting to enable the auto balance feature.

I can join servers just fine, I'm not the one who said they couldn't find any servers. I said the browser was s***, not impossible to use. I also don't struggle to kill anyone, I can kill them quite easily. I said you have 12 people sitting outside the spawn of the other team, you really do need to work on those trolls more because you're talking about stuff I never even mentioned.

Sorry mate but there is cl_excuses written all over your post. Waaaa spawn campers I can't kill them waaaa. The game even helps you after you die by showing their location. Noobs always looking for the excuses after dying but the reality is you are just s*** and will never be an internet superstar.

So I've given the COD free weekend a bash. The game itself is quite good, it has an excellent feel to it, very responsive unlike Battlefield. I like the overall gameplay features of Battlefield better, such as the maps and vehicles.

Having no dedicated servers and the game being riddled with blatant cheaters (what's with that?) is a total deal breaker though. If only they could combine the epicness of battlefield with the responsiveness and feel of COD, with dedicated servers, that would be win.

yeah i was getting annoyed with constantly being shot in the back, so i found a bathroom and camped with my back against the wall... only to be shot in the back, killcam comes up and shows some guy walk along, look up at a wall and fire a few rounds into it.

Games ok, but i have always hated iron sights
