The initial release of the much-anticipated Aliens vs Predator dedicated server is now available. Unfortunately, from a server hosting perspective, it is a really poor implementation.
  1. It seems you need to own the game on Steam to be able to install the dedicated server software.
  2. You need to install the whole game (15gb) to be able to run a server.
  3. You need Steam running to be able to run a server.
  4. You need one Steam account per physical server (which means buying one copy of the game per machine).
Basically, this means it will be quite painful for people to run servers. Pretty disappointing initial release, especially given how much information exists on how to make decent dedicated server software.

It's nice they released it but does anyone really care about this game anymore? To me it's been 1 big failure (thank god colonel marines has been put back into production). I know nothing about how dedicated servers run these days (last one I saw was like 8 years ago or more, running counter-strike at a lan through a dos window) but needing to own the game + have it installed + have steam going + only allowed 1 server per copy, all seems like a load of s***.

This one is wrong I think.

only one steam client/log on is required per machine regardless of the amount of instances you run, and the Steam account used to log on does not need to own a copy of the full game.

The rest of those points are still more than enough to constitute a "fail" though.

So much hype/potential and yet so much disappointment in this game.

+1

I don't think a decent modding effort could even save this POS.

yea its still pretty crap but there are 2 benefits with dedi servers now and 1 is that there are now actually people playing this game and 2 I can play a low ping game.

FML.
I myself am a HUGE fan of Aliens and Predator. The franchises, not this game. Bought Hunter Edition and to be honest the best thing in the box is the iron-on patch (so then, i can display that I learned my lesson in buying it.) (oh and the Facehugger replica isn't that great.. Whoopdif***endoo a crappy non-moveable crapmonster.. My uncles has a facehugger replica over a metre long, now that is awesome)..
Playing Aliens fails, playing Marines fails harder and Predator finishing moves are really the only thing good about the game.. Bad luck, Rebellion. Go kill yourselves now.

I don't think they'll be killing themselves, apparently it sold really well and they're already planning another one. Which means unfortunately, thats just going to convince them that whatever they did this time was the right thing to do :(

Probably because everyone (including myself) was foaming at the mouth to buy it when it got released due to all the hype surrounding it.
It seems like there's always a large number that can't or don't wait until reviews or the entire offering is released (i.e. dedicated server promises) to really see what they're buying.

Oh well, I'll just use the cash I was going to buy AvP with to pick up ME2 instead.

Course they will have to plan another Khel, because there game wont be played for longer then it takes people to finish the single player campain once. Unlike other games that are not 3+ years old and people still play, they didnt design their game with any features of logevity (such as dedicated server and a a pc version of the game[instead we got a consoleport]).

So f*** em.

There is an upside to a planned sequel, something I have noticed as a trend is that if a game sells well enough to justify a sequel they usually listen to feedback about problems with the first and try and address them.
So the hope would be that ok they messed up the first game but if it sold well enough for them to make a sequel then if they are smart they will read the feedback and fix these problems in the next game.

I am just f*****g glad I played the demo lol. Saved me 50 bucks. It had so much potential... I love any asymmetrical team Multiplayer. Bit depressed when I realised how bad the demo was.

Natural Selection > AVP

Engine testing has started for NS2 with the Alpha starting soon. Valve also just confirmed today that pre-orders from UnknownWorlds (devs) will be activated on steam with steamworks towards release.

I never played the original NS so a lot of the hype is lost on me. I remember massive games of it going on at lans but never getting into it myself. Looks pretty cool though

Finished in 4 1/2 hours. Marines lasted about 2 1/2 on hard.

single player is mediocre at best, marine is just blah aliens is pathetic and predator is kinda interesting but the gameplay is just meh, for me the pred campaign completely destroyed any atmosphere of the aliens as scary because it suddenly became so much easier to just take them on hand to hand where as marine you wanted to avoid that.

Totally Agree. As a marine u can just sit there shooting, there are no aliens pinning you to the ground or killing you in 1 hit with a stab from the tail, AVP1 was scary as s***, you had to be on your toes the whole time, paying close attention to the shadows. As a predator, u just sit there waiting for them to come, so u can stab them 3 times in a single second and be done with it.

The campaigns are VERY small, i completed the entire game all 3 campaigns in under 4 hours (Normal). There is absolutely no one online at all so there is nothing else to do in the game...

Other than taking on the game again in a higher difficulty, there is no reason to play this game for more than one day... Very disappointing.

Whats with the Dedicated server being two and a half gigs? That's the size of another game. That's ridiculous...!

this is a perfect example of consoles killing the game.
