GamingBolt have discovered the system requirements for Just Cause 2, highlighting one particular key issue: it will not work on Windows XP. You'll need Windows Vista or Windows 7 and the included fancypants DirectX 10.

While XP support going the way of the dodo was probably inevitable, it's still quite a common operating system for gamers to have installed. No doubt we'll see more and more games follow this path, and even if Just Cause 2 isn't your cup of tea, it's pretty likely that eventually there'll be some game that you want to play that you need to upgrade for. For those - like me - that haven't found any compelling reason to upgrade yet, might be time to start budgeting for an operating system upgrade!

This might have been true about 4 years ago. What games are you having issues playing under Windows 7 64bit? I honestly can't think of a single game I have missed out on due to compatibility issues. Even Commander Keen works using DosBox.

XP 64bit was terrible, Vista/7 64bit is much much better. I haven't had any issues at all.

Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, The Longest Journey - within last ~6 months

It may have been an issue with ati drivers on 64 bit sytems that has since been rectified, but using different compatibility options didn't do the trick.

XP32 has been rock solid, and until a game comes out I want to play or actually makes me want to utilise dx10 I can live with it.

you all sound like old men afraid of change.

I've been using xp up until a couple of weeks ago - then went out on a limb and upgrade to 7. Works fine. One day you'll have to change, why not get used to it early?

I've been using Vista ultimate 64bit for 20 months and haven't had a problem. In fact I've had less reinstalls (like 1) since I started with Vista where with XP Pro (32bit) it became a quarterly chore...

I'm not afraid of the upgrade to Windows 7 - by all reports it's a really decent OS with a lot of cool new features.

My perspective atm is though there's no reason to upgrade so I'd rather hang on to my hard earned cash until I absolutely need to change. Every thing I do works perfectly in WinXP at the moment - the only thing that'll make me change is if some PC game I want requires it. Nothing else, really. Makes me wonder why MS aren't dumping truckloads of cash on PC developers to make their games DX10 only.

trog,

They haven't been dumping cash to make things dx10 exclusive but I know they have been trying to ease people into it I mean look at all the games now that come with dx10 exclusive features some of them that can even work on dx9 (crysis had this for something) so it will prob continue with just the dx10 bonus graphical features for a little while and then eventually they will start pushing games that are exclusive to dx10.

I'm sorry but you have no idea what you are talking about. None of those games have compatibility issues with 64 bit OS and I haven't found any yet that do. I even ran red alert on my win 7 x64 OS. (in win 95 mode of course)

I've been using the 64bit version of windows 7 since build 7100 (public beta).

This is absolute bulls***. Windows 7 64bit is ROCK SOLID. I havent once had a problem with a game on it.

Aion crashed more often on w7 x64 than it does on xp 32 bit. I also ran into some issues with MW2/steam on W7 that are not present in xp.

There are other examples but those are the most recent that come to mind. The OS is quite solid, but not all games are.

I haven't had any issues with any games at all on Windows 7, and i've been running the 64 bit one too. No problems with Steam either. Hell, I probably had more problems with stuff crashing back when I used XP, Win7 seems remarkably solid.

hahah I had no idea that comment would live so long.

My experience with the RC tells me different, as I said, could be ati, could be something else I'm doing wrong. If your experience varies congrats.

I'll end up moving to it at some point.

Fallout 3 in particular, I couldn't get to the exit to the vault without it crashing, it might be different now, but in the meantime I've beaten the game on xp.

Good to see you're all so passionate about it though.

Man i dunno why people still run XP, Vista has been fine now for donkeys, Win 7 is fine now although it seems to be less stable then my Vista machines imho.

Reasons to upgrade?
XP 64-bit is as useless as tits on a bull
Vista/Win 7 64-bit is awesome - no probs
XP is so damn ugly
If your that worried about ur system specs being eaten alive your in dire need of a hardware upgrade mate, cause EVEN my media box runs Vista Ultimate fine and can play 3D games.
