2K Games have left a nice surprise for my arrival to my inbox this morning - the announcement that Civilization 5 is currently in development at Firaxis!
Civilization V takes this definitive strategy game series in new directions with the introduction of hexagon tiles allowing for deeper strategy, more realistic gameplay and stunning organic landscapes for players to explore as they expand their empire. The brand new engine orchestrates a spectacular visual experience that brings players closer to the Civ experience than ever, featuring fully animated leaders interacting with players from a screen-filling diplomatic scene and speaking in their native language for the first time. Wars between empires feel massive as armies dominate the landscape, and combat is more exciting and intense than ever before. The addition of ranged bombardment allows players to fire weapons from behind the front lines, challenging players to develop clever new strategies to guarantee victory on the battlefield. In addition to the new gameplay features debuting in Civilization V, an extensive suite of community, modding and multiplayer elements will also make an appearance.
A bunch of screenshots have been released; check them out on our game page. Awesome!@#

Hexagon love!

I wonder if/what they have done to the research tree, I hope it has been made more complex.

I don't know how I feel about hexagons... I was enjoying my relationship with squares, why ruin a good thing

My relationship with four sides was growing tired and stale, I'm up for a trying a few extra sides. More sides to rub up against is always a good thing.

I'm trying to understand the hexagons. I know they've been a feature of hardcore strategy games for ages, but why? From a given square there are eight bordering squares, from a hexagon there are six bordering hexagons. It seems to limit your options for movement and interaction on the map...

Well theres 8 bordering squares on square tiles if you count corners. That means theres 12 bordering hexagons on hexagon tiles if you count corners.

Edit: Actually, no, there isn't, don't mind me, I'm retarded today.

Each move is equal, you dont get the problem that diagonal movements have to cost 1.4 times as much as horizontal/vertical movements.

Exactly. Diag squares have ad advantage in that you move up and across.
Hex is even in all directions of movement.

My brief period of playing board games like Hero Quest, Space Crusade and Warhammer as an 8-10 year old built up my tolerance to dodecahedron and D12s.

Anyway, bring it on, I can't wait to waste more nights being up til 4am.

Somehow these hexagons makes me feel like I'm playing Settlers of Catan.

Worth keeping in mind. It's 2kgames, so we will be charged anywhere from 2 to 4 times the rest of the planet for digital delivery.

Then just buy it from overseas. Also it is mainly a single player game...

trog: can you ask em what the combat system will be like in civ 5, will it be be similar to civ 4 or are they gonna make it more complex?

Have they changed how the research tree works?

Have they extended the future era of the game?

Some of the most popular mods for Civ 4 are epic and high quality, such as Fall From Heaven. Have the developers of these mods been approached to have a Civ 5 version included in retail?

How is religion handled in Civ 5? In Civ 4 it was very weak, all the different religions were pretty much the same gameplay wise, it made no difference to a civilization to be Buddhist or catholic. Will the different religions have different bonus/cons to your civilization?

Have corporations been revamped to have more impact on civilizations?

There's an early trailer up with no gameplay footage http://au.pc.ign.com/dor/objects/62125/sid-meiers-civilization-v/videos/civilization5_trl_announce_022510.html;jsessionid=18f1n35pihgy2

If they are actually focusing on the concepts the VO mentions, sounds like it could be a great evolution for the franchise...
