2K Games have left a nice surprise for my arrival to my inbox this morning - the
announcement that Civilization 5 is currently in development at Firaxis!
Civilization V takes this definitive strategy game series in new directions with the introduction of hexagon tiles allowing for deeper strategy, more realistic gameplay and stunning organic landscapes for players to explore as they expand their empire. The brand new engine orchestrates a spectacular visual experience that brings players closer to the Civ experience than ever, featuring fully animated leaders interacting with players from a screen-filling diplomatic scene and speaking in their native language for the first time. Wars between empires feel massive as armies dominate the landscape, and combat is more exciting and intense than ever before. The addition of ranged bombardment allows players to fire weapons from behind the front lines, challenging players to develop clever new strategies to guarantee victory on the battlefield. In addition to the new gameplay features debuting in Civilization V, an extensive suite of community, modding and multiplayer elements will also make an appearance.
A bunch of screenshots have been released; check them out on our
game page. Awesome!@#

I wonder if/what they have done to the research tree, I hope it has been made more complex.

My brief period of playing board games like Hero Quest, Space Crusade and Warhammer as an 8-10 year old built up my tolerance to dodecahedron and D12s.
Anyway, bring it on, I can't wait to waste more nights being up til 4am.

Have they extended the future era of the game?
Some of the most popular mods for Civ 4 are epic and high quality, such as Fall From Heaven. Have the developers of these mods been approached to have a Civ 5 version included in retail?
How is religion handled in Civ 5? In Civ 4 it was very weak, all the different religions were pretty much the same gameplay wise, it made no difference to a civilization to be Buddhist or catholic. Will the different religions have different bonus/cons to your civilization?
Have corporations been revamped to have more impact on civilizations?

If they are actually focusing on the concepts the VO mentions, sounds like it could be a great evolution for the franchise...
