SEGA have sent through the official word we'll be seeing a demo for their forthcoming FPS romp, Aliens Vs Predator, hitting the airwaves later today on all three formats, meaning you'll be able to grab it from Xbox Live Marketplace, PlayStation Network and Steam.
We're looking into grabbing the demo and hosting it locally for you right here on AusGamers, so stay tuned, otherwise start getting excited and we'll try and let you know when said demo is live on all three platforms.
Check out more for AvP on our
game page.
Update: The demo for PC has landed early and is
now available on Steam. The PC demo is multiplayer only, so stand by for word on servers.

Oh and the demo limits you to DX9 style graphics. Wow really? You want people to buy your game... based on a multiplayer demo that is s***, and has limiting features on the graphics? Will try again in a few hours when more people have it.

Damn. Well I was gunna take off the steam filter and download it all excitedly but I might leave the filter on and wait till tonight to see what happens.
I think they are using steamworks matchmaking (l4d styles)? Lobby that loads into dedicated?
Posted 12:50pm 04/2/10
G-F*****G-G.
EDIT: They definitely confirmed that they would be 'supporting dedicated servers' though, so perhaps it will come in as an auxiliary option for LAN support or something in the retail version.
This demo just has a simple quickplay option, like Modern Warefare 2, but without the bells and whistles (no host migration etc).

EDIT - Also I got the predator weapons to work. Who the f*** thought this was a good idea? Goes something like this...
1.) see an enemy standing still. good.
2.) push and hold 2, to bring up your disc in the menu
3.) aim at the target and then push left alt
4.) wait for super lag and hope you killed him
Really? We couldn't of just put away a wrist blade and got a model of him holding the disc?
EDIT 2 - OH and what is up with the melee attacking system where the camera automaticly follows the target when you attack, regardless of what your doing with your mouse? We understand how to use the mouse to follow the target, we aren't retarded console fps players here. We understand the mechanics of the mouse and it's aiming feature.

What the f** were they thinking porting a console game to the pc? You always go from pc to console for f*** sake.
Here is this game laid out for you.
1. Spam Q and sprint behind somoene
2. Spam E to 'grab' the person
3. Spam mouse1 untill they die
How the _f***_ did they manage to ruine avp ?
- Why are the marines so f****g slow? In avp1 you had a fast moving marine with alot of firepower, that aws there only defence... spaming nades via mouse2 and spamming bullets and trying to keep a mad sence of where enemies had gone. ---OH OF COURSE! You can press Q to spirnt but you lose your weapon... so you ether walk normally and become a 'turret' or you sprint and you lose your weapon. What a f*****g genious idea. Any ability we had to try and sidestep an attack has now been lost. No f****g skill left at all to the marine.
- What the f*** is with the 'lobby' system and why is there no game server browser that i can use to make sure I can connect to the lowest latency server?
- What the f*** is with attacking 'locking' you onto an enemy (auto aiming) and therefore making this a mouse1 clickfest
- Why the f*** wasnt there any way to make my own server and play around without other players joining?
- Why the f*** did they lock settings changes via console?
- DEATHMATCH ONLY? WHAT - THE - F**. The whole idea is to have a team of marines against preds against aliens ffs. Only one match mode in the demo... WHY???? How could you possibly not give the option of having marines v aliens etc...? Killing an alien as an alien is the gayest thing ive ever seen. Spam Q-E-Mouse2.
This has been the most disapointing game demo in a very very long time. Not because its under polished. But because it IS polished, polish is all over this game... and it reaks of one f****g thing... console.
I'm so pissed off right now. F*** this developer.
How could you seriously get a game for pc so wrong? It's really not that f*****g hard, dont shove console ways of doing things down our throught and we wouldnt have even noticed.

Welcome to PC gaming. We get s***** ports of most games. Very few people make games for PC first, although they claim they do.
Can't argue there. It's horrible.
This became a thing of the past since L4D came out I think. That or it's just another casualty of the console -> PC porting deal.
That would be too logical.

PS: This game is gonna be Saweet =P Predator FTW!, Pity how u cant be Arnold Swarzaneggaa YAwooo!
But apparently things dont sound to be going so well Marine Wise haha, by the sounds of it. kinda is pointless trying to find a game with no lag. and the fact u gotta dodge a alien thats running at you going 100 km/h ill try to stay away from being a Marine if i can so i dont hate the game :P

Annoying crosshair on marines.
Alien was pretty fun imo but changing between floors and walls is gay until I turned on that thing in options. NS Skulk > alien
retarded control scheme and HUD for predator. Upgraded weapons so satisfying in a demo that is pretty fail
microphones in the lobby OMG annoying feedback bs
Why the hell would they use DM to sell the game? They should've included predator hunt or survivor or infestation or domination lol.

A lot of my problems with the game come down to how unplayable it is due to it being p2p style. Every game i've tried has had nothing but lag. Dedicated servers will fix this.

edit: also I just don't play that many new games any more; I don't have time. I'm mostly interested in FPS games and the occasional rare RTS, but I have really specific requirements for FPS games and one of them is the ability to not feel like I'm being treated like an idiot when I play, I guess
edit#2: oh yeh! the other thing is I like buying games that I know will be playable in several years. Extensability/moddability goes hand in hand with dedicated servers. You get infinitely more value out of a game that is easily moddable and has dedicated servers. There are fewer and fewer of these though :(

I don't understand why developers are trying so hard to move away from 3rd party dedicated servers. Here is a totally free service offered by many ISP's around the world that directly makes their game more enjoyable, they don't even need to say anything, just release a dedicated server module and the ISP's will do the rest.
I also like to play PC games on my PC, not console games.

When will dev's of FPS games listen to the players?
Based off the demo I will not be purchasing this game.
Key issues why:
1: No ability to browse servers that are hosting, no filters available to refine server queries.
2: No display of latency based rates for players.
3: Peer to peer doesn't work for FPS, dev's have been living under a rock I assume.
4: Auto lockon is horrible for when you are trying to perform an evasive jump to avoid your opponent as it jumps you to your current target.
5: Character selection screen is fiddly and slapped together, inability to change team in Death-match would just have players leave the server if they are not happy with the class balance.
6: You cannot join an existing game with this demo as it slap's you in a lobby where the host is in the UKRAINE running a pentium like computer on an internet connection made up from telegraph wire.
Flashpoint had this style of server manager and the game community is now a ghost town only three months after it's release.
I would hate to see this game go the same way.
For all the reasons stated above I will not be purchasing or recommending this game to my friends.
I know that the game will have dedicated server support, but I have no idea is it will be their servers or any company with VAC agreements can set one up.

This game still has some potential in my eyes, its just that i don't know if they are going to live up to it.
Everything just seemed sluggish (i imagine i was getting European servers or US ones or something, but movement felt slow and unresponsive, it took me a while to figure the controls too- like the weapon swap.
I think if i do decide to pick this up (lets hope we get a steam sale or something early on) then i would mostly be sticking to co op with mates at this rate.

And while I'll still be getting the game (even if it's just for the facehugger) I hope like utter utter hell that they don't have as many stupid omissions like in the demo (and that they play it before release... open mics in lobby, no server browser (which I could reluctantly live with if it had local filters... Oh and not hiding the latency in an effort to hide how s*** the multiplayer hosting is)....
...I miss the face hugger in multiplayer...

It isn't about the cost of the service, or the quality of it... at all. Matchmaking systems give them total control over the players ability to play the game. They can control the content that you have access to, only allowing new additions like maps and skins via paid DLC. Plus, as mentioned earlier, they can turn off the matchmaking service when they want you to buy the next game.
This shift is all about increasing profitability. Big game makers spend big money developing, which is usually provided by the big swinging d**** (EA, Activision, etc.) and they demand return on their investment. Having players getting stuff for free is money lost in their minds.

My exact thoughts. I was pissed off when I was a marine and another marine first killed me. It just seems wrong and stupid, they're on the same team.. right?
Posted 04:08pm 05/2/10
And thats the reason I wouldnt buy the first game or the sequel. The problem then though is that there is 1,000,000 other 10 year olds that will, who are probably all playing the console version. So the developer thinks they have done great, not realising they could have sold double that and not even had to release a sequel if they had longevity in their design in the form of dedicated server, no matchmaking gayness, community creation/build tools etc.
Posted 04:34pm 05/2/10
Meaning this will fix up a variety of issues that people are having with the matchmaking system / wishing for dedicated servers.
Posted 05:46pm 05/2/10
Posted 06:18pm 05/2/10
My best theory for the matchmaking system for the demo is maybe they were experimenting to see how it worked with steams lobby system? - Although it did state that it was pre-release code used in the demo so maybe they used the code from a console version? *Shrugs* I am not sure.
But I for one look forward to AVP regardless and found that controls were easy to grasp (played avp2 recently to brush up on the controls agian) despite a bit of getting used to and lag is a major factor with manuevers or attacks as people previously said, find an aussie host and there's no problem.

But apart from that once I found someone local hosting it (still hate the matchmaking system but that's fixed in the full game) I had no lag or CTD's or anything I'm just going off my opinion and what I saw. However the insta-kills were quite annoying and soon turned into a conga-line massacre although they were quite awesome to watch the executions. But at the same time like mostly everyone else I too would have preferred a species team deathmatch than deathmatch in general for the demo.

"Unprecedented demand for Aliens vs Predator following the release of the cross-platform demo yesterday morning brought to light matchmaking issues resulting in players having to wait to join games, or even not find games at all.
We’re pleased to say later in the day the issue was corrected and a small patch to the PC executable next time you launch it from Steam will have you finding and playing games using Quick Match as it was intended.
While this issue did not affect the Xbox 360, we are with SEGA’s assistance investigating reports of a similar nature on the PlayStation 3 and working flat out on a solution.
The full game features the ability to browse for and create games but for the purposes of simplicity the demo was limited to matchmaking, alongside the ability to set up groups with friends which mitigated yesterday’s issues for many.
We’re really sorry that this issue tainted a day in which we saw many people get hands on with AvP for the first time and we’re hugely gratified by the positive feedback to the game."

I really wouldn't hold the NS2 devs up as paragons of game development, every time I've read their site it sounds to me like they're either dellusionally ambitious, arrogant, naieve, or a dangerous combination of all three.
Posted 02:15pm 06/2/10
In saying this, due to steam being a flaming pile of horse d****, I can't even download it to try it, so I don't know just how bad it is.
Posted 11:37pm 06/2/10
What I'd like to know is how the hell to you break out of a hold when they've grabbed you and are about to kill you, I've had marines and predators do it to me over and over just to one shot me.

You mean the 3 man team that has only recently moved to a 4 man team who hasnt really got paid for anything they have done so far but still manage to maintain the bookwork to keep 4 people going all the while making a title that will match todays physics, graphics and artwork polish of a corporation sized dev team?
Yeah no reason for a team like that to be ambitious/arrogant/naieve with the ways they do things. They should just throw in the towl.
Posted 09:47am 07/2/10
I know I'm probably coming accross as a bit of a scrooge, looking at indie devs and proclaiming "Bah, humbug!", but I've just seen this sort of thing so many times before, tiny team made up of idealistic, starry eyed developers who take on something thats waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too complex and over-scoped and fall extremely short of their goal (or just don't finish it at all) as a result. Developing a game of the complexity of NS2 even with a pre-existing engine and a team of 3 or 4 people would be a huge undertaking. Developing the engine as well at the same time? Thats just lunacy.

When they start taking pre-orders for the game with no certainty that it won't just be vaporware that's when it crosses into dangerous territory.
Posted 11:21am 07/2/10
It sounds like they have the engine pretty much done. Its the NS2 game that all their fans have been wondering whats taking so long thats taking forever, why? I'm pretty sure they want to follow the model of Johnny C/R and make an engine that can be re-sold. But have NS2 as their flagship game to demonstrate it.
Their editor after all is pretty much a full look at their engine, except for the LUA part (at the moment) which is rock solid for me.
Posted 11:28am 07/2/10
Compare this to the recent Bad Company 2 beta launch (technically not a demo, but really its the same thing). Admittedly they have a bit of practice at this, but its not like client/server multiplayer is new territory, but they basically NAILED the launch - it's been the single most popular FPS launch in years almost any way you want to look at it.
Posted 12:53pm 07/2/10
A demo though, A demo should be pretty much a portion of the completed game. I don't want excuses such as, 'o yer this is old code' or, 'yer we will have dedicated servers in the real game'..
Its a fkn DEMO, get it right plz.
Posted 01:09pm 07/2/10
The entire game still consisted of playing like you were a rogue in world of warcraft, stealthing around and aiming for that Q sprint, E lock on behind them and mouse 2 instant kill combo that aparently console fans like.
No f****g way should a fps have 'lock on' or instant kills moves imo. It's just f****g stupid. Give marins back there legs.
