Cryptic Studios have just kicked off the open beta for their latest massively multiplayer title, the epic Star Trek Online, bringing the final frontier all together in one bigass game.

Thanks to the awesome folk at Cryptic, we've got a swag of beta keys to giveaway to AusGamers readers and if you point your phasers over this way you just might be able to snag yourself one. Get in quick though, because these are first in first served. Update: all keys are now gone, thanks for playing!

Once a beta key is acquired, you can download the full beta client Right here from AusGamers (6.38GB), then head over to startrekonline.com/openbeta for registration.

For those that can't spare the gigabytes or don't do that beta thang, our resident trekkie Steve has been putting some quality time in already and we'll have his impressions on the game up soon. We also have an exclusive developer interview with the game's Executive Producer Craig Zinkievich incoming that should answer some lingering questions so keep an eye out for that one.

Star Trek Online is due for a February 11 2010 retail release in Australia with online distributions likely being available to Aussies sooner due to the earlier North American release date of February 2.

Yeh the Internode one is 8 too - was gonna just give it a go anyway, no loss if it fails..

Bah: I can't say that I've tested installing either, but the 8GB one that node/3fl have there is the closed beta files. We have that too http://www.ausgamers.com/files/details/html/49590 - notice the date in the version.

The open beta client, I just pulled down directly from Cryptic this morning http://www.ausgamers.com/files/details/html/49743 notice the date in the version. Not sure why it's smaller, maybe they stripped some assets or compressed something better. The zip is from an official source though and although I haven't installed it locally, it test extracts fine in 7zip.

Yeah i thought it might be the closed beta when i saw the date and older file version, 3fl is pretty slow with its file updates lately i didnt think it would be a newer version.
I'll just see if it updates or whatever i guess.

Apparently after the 6.4Gb there's about 2Gb of updates you have to download anyway.

Don't install the Closed Beat Client, it will cause you to download the whole 8.2g Open Beta client.

This is the Open Beta Client, http://www.ausgamers.com/files/details/html/49743, after which you'll update with the .10 and .14 patches which will take about 1.5 minutes on a 20mb ADSL 2+ connection.

Yes the Borg are in it. The first mission you do involves the Borg. Just remember these are 2409 Borg, they are less scary than they were.

Yeah, played it for a few hours so far, its not bad, though it seems to be rather buggy and crashes on me a lot, otherwise I probably would have played it more. Don't think I'll buy it, but its a fun diversion.

Also, why are the Borg such pussies now?

Hrmm, it comes out February 2? Its still really rough around the edges, and lagging like crazy, crashing, full of bugs. Can't imagine it being in a great state if it launches in 2 weeks time...

yeah and i dunno if it's just because the servers were rather full but there's a massive rubberbanding issue going on.
I didn't have it crash on me but yeah it is quite rough considering release is almost upon us.

Can someone who knows stuff about Star Trek explain why the Borg suck now though? I mean, I've only really watched the movies, but they seemed pretty damn intimidating and nigh on unstoppable, and now you can slap them to death. It hints in the game that something happened to them to make them s***, but then didn't explain it, so I figure I'm supposed to already know why they're s*** from watching Star Trek?

They are disconnected is what they say. The game is also set in the future of the current Star Trek law it helps with Warp speed not taking 5 weeks to get a sector.

Anyway, I've given this game a small bash so far, about to get my next ship, going an Escort.

I would prefer much more detailed control over the ships systems. I find it to be a bit too simple at the moment.
I would also like the option to fly my ship from inside the bridge, more simulator styles.

It feels a bit too arcade game for my likes.

I was really non-plussed in the couple hours after I got it, felt really generic MMO until I started doing some patrol missions which was a lot more fun. The very initial tutorials don't really sell the game, having fun now tho :)

I'm looking forward to getting a little deeper into the game to see just how your Officers can change gameplay. I'd also like the ability to totally redistribute the shields, give two sides 10% and the other two 90% and keep your stronge shields facing enemy. But it doesn't quite give you that much control.
