The awesome GOG.com team have resurrected the classic PC game Myst - once the best-selling PC game of all time until it was knocked off by The Sims. If you're an old school PC gamer you'll probably remember it's amazing graphics, delivered on a high-tech single CD-ROM disc. For those who came in late:
Myst is a first-person graphic adventure game praised by gamers and by critics for its engaging story, incredible atmosphere and a general experience that resembles a work of art as much as a video game. All those aspects made the game a best-selling PC title throughout the 1990s. The player is put in the role of a stranger who gets magically transported to a mysterious island described in a book. To complete the game, the player must explore the seemingly deserted Myst Island and solve a wide range of challenging puzzles.
Our game page has more information and some screenies, and because it is a GOG game we also have a handy buy page for it. GOG.com games are DRM free and are revamped for modern operating systems; they have a great catalogue which is constantly expanding - so if you're feeling nostalgic, check them out.

I was a massive fan of the graphical zorks.

Zork Nemesis and Zork Grand Inquistor are amazing games.

I don't think I could even finish them again, my 12yo mind struggled for months but somehow completed it.

^ Commendable enthusiasm with keeping the old hardware alive. RTZ runs awesome on DOSBox too.

For the stubborn games, virtual PC (free) or vmware workstation ($) are a good option as well.

mmm dunno how they work with glide & general midi... my awe64 gold plays midi better than my main pc with a 200mb soundfont.
From what I've seen, emulation never quite gives the same results as the real deal.

I still have my XT w/ 360k floppies and 10 mb HDD, 386DX-40, P100, PIII-550, PIV-DualCore 3.2. My systems don't die they get retired to the spare PC room with their old games.

Now that's dedication.
DOSBox can sometimes be a pain to config the really low speeds just right, but it's been ages since I've seen an XT with a clackety clack keyboard.
You could probably cut that thing in half and count the rings! :)

Edit:
