The popularity of zombies has finally reached critical mass in that, its latest manifestation of popularity has seen the announcement of a MMO (massively multiplayer online) being developed for the console market.

But, this is not just any zombie game cash-in, this is a MMO being developed by the newly formed Undead Labs, a Seattle-based development studio created by ex-Blizzard/NCsoft honcho, Jeff Strain. And given the name of the studio, you can bet they take their base craft and (clear) inspiration very, very seriously. Hell, they even cite the use of #2 pencils and lawnmowers as ways of carving through zombie hordes - sounds about right to me.

"Every time I see a good zombie movie with friends, we spend days debating our strategies for surviving the zombie apocalypse," Strain explains on the studio's official site. "The police station, or the supermarket? Garden rake, or staple gun? Bach, or the White Stripes? I'm a game developer, so I'd probably be useless for anything other than ghoul bait, but I'm excited to have the opportunity to build an MMOZ that lets us put those strategies to the test and find out for sure."

There are currently no other details other than the game being in existence and for console only (at this stage), but we'll keep an eye on its development and let you know anything new that crops up.

Hmmm somehow I dont think a Zombie MMO is going to be the next wow killer but im still looking for one :)

and for the record...

- On a Farm (so you can see them coming for miles
- Barricaded off concrete barriers + Barbed razor wire and booby traps along with a early warning detection system
- Off the grid (as in power etc)house with water/crops/food supplies and a underground shelter for a quick escape if needed.
- S*** loads of Munitions and weapons

I'd love an MMO where travelling would require you to go with several other players just to reach some outpost/mall/something else. All about survive, there would be no character levels.

Actually if it were an MMO it would suck, a zombie game with multiplayer.

P.S this is going to suck.

It will get censored, unless you play Russian survivor's and the zombies are in an airport and just trying to catch a flight.

I think a multiplayer type Garrison game with different locations would be awesome. Way more awesome then I think a Zombie MMO would be. FPS style.

As for surviving the Zombie horde myself, i'd hop in the boat and try get away. Head to a seculded island and pray that zombies cant walk that far accross the bottom of the ocean without perishing. Surely if you held out long enough they would run out of stuff to eat and perish?

The trouble is, there's so many different species of Zombie you would have to know which you were dealing with before you could make a solid survival plan.
