the rpg element can be summed up pretty easily...
each class has a special move..
that move can be leveled.. so to speak...
for example.. roland has a turret with a small shield that you can drop during fights..
you can make the turret do more damage.. pulse an area of effect heal and an area of effect replenish amo after leveling the shield up some you get options to give it rockets and so forth.

doesn't seem much different than say the Engy in TF2, is that game an fps+rpg?

In some ways it's even better on the second play through! Not scrounging for cash etc so I find it a lot more enjoyable. And everything is more challenging.
TF2 is actually pretty close to an RPS. It does a dice roll on every shot when "Damage Spread" is enabled doesn't it? Like on most pubs a rocket can do anywhere from 80% to 120% damage (not including crits) depending on random factors.

Also, to those who have played the majority of it, have you noticed a few of the 'boss' creatures' mouths oddly resemble the most terrifying variants of vaginas you've ever seen? 'i.e. Rakk Hive'

Nope everything seems to be the same every time I go back there. On play through 2 and haven't noticed anything different in the environment yet.
I'm not even sure if I've seen any exploding cacti?!?!?
