The debut trailer for Dust 514, a console sci-fi shooter (that may still arrive on PC also) has arrived, and the game is looking bloody fantastic. Stunning visuals, an emphasis on explosive sound and solid art-direction nestle alongside intense action and combat, suggesting this game may revive the stale sci-fi shooter genre.

Dust 514 is a FPS/MMO hybrid set within the EVE Online universe, and will allow players to interact directly with EVE Online (just how hasn't really been fully revealed just yet) and feature RTS-style gameplay along with traditional FPS mechanics. It's a bold and interesting game, so stay tuned for more details as they arise.

Does this qualify as an MMO in it's own right or is it the staging of battles being initiated within the actual EVE online MMO as they become become available and ony within certain time and establish martial values established by players in the original game?

I want to listen to that video again when i get home except with 2000watts of stereo behind it. If nothing else, the sound for the demo movie thing was pretty awesome.

It's an FPS that exists in the Eve Online Universe. The game has only been announced for the Xbox360 and PS3 so far. A yet to be explained mechanism will allow the Dust514 console gamers to communicate and co-operate with the PC based Eve Online MMO players (but possibly not in real time). What has been explained so far is the Dust514 battles can effect who owns some systems in the Eve Online Universe and the PC gamers will have to support and supply their console buddies to help with the overall victory in that system/area.

Both games will interact together, but neither requires the other to be played. So if Dust 514 fell on its face, it should/would be irrelevant to the Eve players and vice versa. There are just bonuses on both sides to be had by collaborating.

FPS are fun on consoles, Golden eye is a testament that most people use, but i just finished COD4 and i enjoyed all of that.

Skill wise of a console player playing against a PC player would be a joke, you're so limited.

But then again a mouse and keyboard controlled robot would be slaughtered by someone physical perhaps.

Take the limitations and play with people on the same playing level. At least in terms of consoles, every player has the exact same restriction without ease of modding/cheating/spending thousands for a better reaction time keyboard mouse monitor.

Not to say i enjoy competitive console FPS, I don't. It feels like halflife 1. Awkward.

The fact is that consoles primary purpose is gaming and they do a damn good job of it.

This thread make me angry!!

Silly PC Gamers (the word 'gamers' obviously used lightly) thinking they can out do console gamers is a joke.

Nothing like having to try and maneuver around when you have to use 2 different devices and about 10+ keys apposed to an ergonomically designed control with everything conveniently at your fingertips.

You obviously haven't seen a real console gamer and I would be happy to demonstrate some COD4 to anyone ;)

Again it arises that until multi-platform gaming is around it cannot be proven but it will be a good day if it ever comes around because i believe PC users would be sadly mistaken.

It's funny how console gamers always seem to 'forget' the multiplatform games have been down before (shadowrun? or something like that), and the console users got whomped so badly the developers basically gave them autoaim and other advantages.

I'd be interested to know what generation of consoles were around when that game was multi platform.

Cause if it was older than the Xbox 360 age I'd be suprised there would be such a gap between the pc and console gamers.

The 360 controllers in particular are the best controllers ergonomically that I've used.

CCP (the makers of eve) just had their fanfest, and there was some further info about how eve-online and dust are going to interact. This is what I've been able to work out:

* As part of the next update (called Dominion), we're getting prettier planets that have modelled land masses, clouds, water etc etc. So far, it's just pretty, but with the next step in mind...

* When Dust comes out, around the same time as the update following dominion, eve-online corporations and alliances will be able to interact with planets in null sec systems (need a particular type of resource? You need a particular type of planet to supply it for example). This means they'll dictate to a certain extent where players of dust play.

* Future updates / expansions have the devs speculating about things like "hiring", so people who are good at dust can be hired by the highest bidder. Also, eve players and corps will be able to set up supply lines to dust players to give them an advantage and allow them to have greater control over their sovereign planets etc etc

* Once ambulation comes in, players in eve may be able to interact with players of dust, such as meeting up in space stations to discuss tactics etc etc. There's been a different take on the whole "walking in stations" thing, so this is probably going to change in some way.

So there ya go... interesting. I'm not sure that it's actually going to work very well, because eve players are going to have to depend on console gamers with the attention spans of retarded snails to ensure their sovereignty on planets, and that's going to suck :) Of course, they might have some clever way of getting around that...

Maybe we can pick an objective test until we can compete head to head, like a speed run, and see who wins. I reckon PC players will win.

trog, there are games where x360 players can vs PC players. shadowrun is one of them:

Shadowrun is the flagship title for the Games for Windows - LIVE service that allows Windows Vista PC users to be fully integrated into Xbox Live. Due to this integration, FASA has decided to make several changes to try and create a more balanced competition between the Xbox 360 and PC versions.

* Because of the lack of 'pixel-accuracy' with the Xbox 360 analog thumbstick, the designers have included an aim-assisting technology, which basically interpolates the player's movement and causes the reticle to stay over an enemy player like a weak magnet. In addition, FASA has implemented a feature which causes the cross-hair to expand during quick movements, thus lowering the player's accuracy, making it impossible to quickly turn and maintain accuracy, reducing the potential advantage of playing with a mouse.[6][7] PC players, who have a more sensitive control scheme, are able to turn significantly faster than their controller-using counterparts and would have gained an unfair advantage.

regank: there's no question that a mouse offers more accuracy than a gamepad/stick, and that a kb offers more inputs and mapping options than a controller. i know it must be very tough for you, but don't take it personally :)

Highly unlikely, but it would be kinda hilarious.

I'm more concerned that there'd be no uptake on dust, and eve players will need to use some sort of scissors / paper/ rock algorithm to find outcomes from battles.

Yeah I do... can you tell? :P

I've been playing it on and off for about 3 years now, although only really started getting into it since the Trinity expansion (about 2 years ago?).

I'm a hi-sec carebear mostly, although I like to think of myself as a wealthy industrialist ;) I have 3 accounts, so I've got some PVP characters, mission runners, miners and a trader type who just got herself a freighter!

They've implemented PLEX now as well, "Player Licence EXtension". It allows you to buy game time with ISK (in game money). You can actually play it for "free" if you can make around 600mill+ ISK a month (which is more than possible). Players can buy PLEX with real money and sell them in game, with the prices dictated by the in game economy.
