We sit down with Ion Hazzikostas, Game Director of World of Warcraft, to discuss the launch of Dragonflight, WoW development, dragon-riding becoming a mainstay, and more.
EA have released a playable demo for Need for Speed SHIFT, the recently launched new addition to their long-running car racing franchise.
The Spa and London River tracks are at your disposal along with five cars, including the Dodge Viper, Lotus Elise, BMW M3, Nissan GTR, and finally the Pagani Zonda, which must be unlocked.
I heard that the port to PC from console was quite bad and that immediately turned me off. Nothing about shift seemed very different to GRID and GRID is still great so happy to ignore this.
for those having problems.. trying running in windows 98 compatibility mode, mine would load the first loading screen, then nothing but black. doing compatibility mode fixed it.
It's a f*cking excellent game. I've put 30 hours in since release.
While car performances are inconsistent and certainly not do not match their real world counter-parts, the actual driving physics and mechanics are surprisingly realistic. With a wheel and some customisation of the control settings, you can get a really authentic drive - just don't try and relate the feel of performance to the car you're supposed to be driving.
If you love driving for the sake of driving, it s**** over Grid. I've spent hours just setting up a car and doing dozens of laps around a track by myself striving for that perfect lap time, soaking up every twitch and thud as the car slips out from beneath itself and then slaps into gear over chicanes, trying to find the ideal apex. And it gets even better with a field of drivers online.
If however you need some sort of career story, more interesting interaction with the game off of the track or any one of the things that I don't care about in a racing game, Codemasters titles have and will continue to cater quite nicely. But don't expect them to create anything remotely close to a realistic driving system anytime soon. To be honest, I'm scared s***less that the F1 game they're producing is going to be another one of their throw-away arcade racers.
yea i think you really need a wheel to enjoy this game fully. keyboarding it doesnt cut it. particularly the drifting which is nigh on impossible with a keyboard.
Personally, I'd like to see more debilitating vehicle damage instead of just cosmetic panel damage.
I did an endurance race with some 15 cars for 30 laps on a demolition style figure 8 track and had no panels left to speak of yet the car still handled just fine - Must have been just a Muscle Car thing tho :P
ACtually got spun around and watched another car get T-Boned as it was going through the intersection and it was literally sky rocketed out of sight almost vertically. Cracked us all up on watching replay many times. While I give it the thumbs up I think Grid's debilitating damage model worked better (and yes I have full damage set on).
That said, just once I'd like to see in a race game the ability to record or at least save your replays (Can't get fraps to work in Vista 64).

I actually found my wheel too slow for the drift sections in underground, I preferred the keyboard. The only time I used my wheel was for the actual races.
yea their implementation of damage is silly. All I have noticed thus far is if you take a hit really hard on front left/right, your car will pull in that direction.
Strik3r, haven't experienced that. But I've got all assists off and am using a wheel.
From what I'm hearing around the interwebs, a wheel is almost required for this game. It seems wheel-racers love it to bits, and controller-racers are a bit miffed as to what all the excitement is about.
I am trying to use the keyboard but it is a constant struggle and effecting the enjoyment of this game.
I am about to take off to the shops to buy a xbox360 windows controller connector. I’m hoping this will make it a lot easier to handle the cars.
So far I love the graphics. The game looks great and the racing physics feels and sounds awesome.
drifting is FUBAR. The physics are a lot better than Pro Street but still far from how a real car would react. I have noticed cars still speed up for a sort second after you release the accelerator mid drift?
Then there is the menu which personally I found to be quite hard to navigate. And watching the starting intro for every race gets a little tiring.
Still you can tell this game would be a dream to play with a steering wheel and I still feel the urge to level up my driving skill to 50.
huge ram hog
unskippable, long, s***, irrelevent movies of lame crashes?
inaccessable menus? i am not even given the opportunity to try and fix the F***ED controls, i just have to deal with it for at least 2 races?!
no option to QUIT from a race?! oh nevermind it just crashed out for me.
im enraged at how unbeleivably s*** EA have made this potentially good sim
at least it'll keep all the retards out of rfactor
I wouldnt bother with the game, go check the official forum for the amount of bugs the release has. Some cars you cant even drive because of errors... Even on the console version. And good luck getting the game to run if you have an ATI card or running in SLI - until they patch it at least. With my oc'd 4890 and q9550@ 3.6ghz on minimum detail framerates drop below 30 on some tracks. On the same track on the same straight i got over 130. Some people loose 20 - 30fps with their cards in sli mode.In comparison grid, which is a similar game, and looks better, i get 70-100fps with everything on max so its not my sytem. I ended up getting eb to give me a refund after i lost my 2nd career to some stupid bug that requires you to delete the career file and start again

I have not played the demo, but have the full game, works awesome, no crashes, controls are not only very customizable but they are also fine on default (keyboard) and I clipped a wall at 200ish and was unable to to keep the thing straight because of the damage, although I can't actually wreck a car. As for the thing being a hog, my system (E8400, GTX275, 4GB, Win7, no O.C) is running it silky smooth at all times on max settings in 1080p @ 8AA. Sounds like an issue at your end, or the demo is from an alpha build, I'm not going to DL it to check.
Oh and I can skip cut scenes/movies just fine and the menus are great. Great game, well worth the $50.
The game is indeed riddled with bugs - no arguments there. Frame rates are also poor.
I've now moved back to Live for Speed after around 40 hours with this, but I had a lot of fun with it.
For those that are complaining about the "permenant oversteer", move the oversteer/understeer slider all the way to the far end of oversteer (yes, oversteer). Strangely enough, this helps. Bug? Or lousy tuning design? ;)

Sounds like need for speed undercover, I whacked it in my 360 and it just started me in the first mission to evade the cops, no indication of what the hell the controls even were or an option to enter any menus. I thought I was seeing things, EA are like the opposite of goldfinger, where he could touch dogs*** and turn it to gold, ea can touch gold and turn it to dog s***.

I set-up my controls before starting the first race (makes sense?). You can quit from all races except for your very first time trial.
Oh, and it's not a sim.
