Windows 7
is coming:
Microsoft has confirmed its new Windows 7 operating system will be generally available on October 22, well ahead of its original schedule and in time for the holiday shopping season.
The new operating system, which will replace the unpopular Vista, was originally planned for roll-out at the beginning of next year, but Microsoft confirmed last month that it would hit the market in time for the year's busiest shopping period.
A lot sooner than expected which is good news IMO. Win7 is such an amazing OS compared to Vista and I'll be getting a copy for sure.

It's good sure, great maybe. I still honestly don't get the hate for Vista, I've used both and while Windows 7s improvements over Vista are good, it's not as if they're totally different operating systems.
An amazing OS compared to XP, yes.

but i also used vista before this for a few months, and did not have a single problem with it.

Thats not really fair. Starter isn't a true edition of the OS, its a Starter version, like shareware.
Its a great improvement over Vista, and I liked Vista. Its around 95484% better than XP.

I just f*****g lost $2k so I am broke, AND I have no monitor

Let's just hope they're not rushing it out just so they can get it in for christmas and hope to patch it up later. You know, kind of like what EA does.
I can safely say I won't be buying a copy of this for quite some time if at all but this brings me to another question, if you have windows vista or xp that needs activation will MS provide activation servers forever or will you simply be unable to use the OS after a certain amount of time? Granted by the time they retire the server the OS is probably going to be well out of date but it seems a bit of an a****** move to simply render software useless and unable to be activated and even more reason to simply pirate it.
Over $700 for the "ultimate" version I suspect and, let's face it, why would you bother with anything less? Unless you're some sort of gimp who just browses the net and reads emails which you could use any number of linux distros for, for free.

I thought this was a joke and you were having a go at it. I actually laughed. Then I realised you were being serious. Funny thing was the fact it had "Promoted Forum Post" next to it :P

What if you didn't buy the OS with a new PC? I'm not going to go out and buy another PC just so I can get windows 7, your logic fails.

F*** OEM software to hell, I've been there in the past and never again. Also some stores will make you buy at least a major computer component or two before selling you OEM software.
Only noobs buy OEM. Noobs and gimps, or gimpy noobs.

Damn, and we were all really hoping to impress you too.

No, people like me cause Y2K, because I would see that requiring a whole byte to represent '7' is unnecessary and would pack it in to 4 bits, forever solving the problem of Windows 8.

Well, actually you only need three bits

From a users point of view they probably like the fish, big icons, changing backgrounds and swirly lights.

Well I've been running the Windows 7 Beta and RC for a few months now. The Media Centre is pretty good, its certainly stable, has some major improvements over Vista and is overall a much better product.
The only problem with it I've found is that I am still waiting for a couple of my favourite plugins to be updated to work with it.
epgStream.net are still working on the EPG. Even IceTV hasn't got this one licked yet. However you can either use EIT data (which is s***e but okay if you don't really care if the information is correct or not), or Naill over at BigScreen software has built a beta version of his BigScreenEPG which is the only tool that I know of that can load XMLTV data into Windows 7. I have it running for a couple of weeks now and its good, once you get over the config stage you can just leave it and it works. The beautiful thing is now you get to add channel logos into the guide grid, makes it very easy to pick the channels for my kids. 4 TV tuners work without registry hacks too which is nice.
I have replaced the Movies Strip with just Media Browser as that does everything I need with Movies and TV Series. TMT 3.0 runs like a champ for the BRD.
I am missing the MC Menu Mender app though cause at the moment you have to either regedit everything to change the menus or you have to edit the .dll files.
The MCE Standby Tool works mostly, I've had a few small S3 issues but I expect those to be sorted when the RTM comes out. Certainly not deal breakers.
As a media centre I have to say that W7 is better than vista, its more stable (even as RC) and has better features. Once the community catches up with all the plugin updates etc it will be awesome.
My Media Centre Specs:
DFI - GF9400-TRS Jnr
Intel E7400
2Gb Kingston 800Mhz DDR2
2 x Hauppage HVR-2200 DVB-T cards (4 tuners)
1 x Samsung 750Gb HDD (system and Tv Record)
3 x Seagate 1.5Tb HDD (movies, TV, Music, Pictures)
LG BR - HD ROM
Antec Fusion Remote Max HTPC Case
Seasonic 550W modular PS
Logitech DiNovo Mini
MS Remote and Reciever

does the media centre extender support for xbox360 look the same?
it changed when it went from xp to vista
Posted 04:51pm 04/6/09
Tried doing the media center extender thing last night, and it'd find the xbox, and start the "configuring media center extender" step, then my 360 would show a "Downloading" screen for a couple of minutes before eventually stopping with an error about being unable to connect to my PC.

Wow, they still haven't fixed that bug? I get that in XP ffs. I have to first minimise the window then maximise it again to make it come forward. Glad to see MS working so hard to make the interface more efficient. oh wait.....
I got MCE working with vista + my 360 but after discovering how s***house a stock 360 is at playing anything but dvd's (no codec support without transcoding) I just hooked my computer up straight to my TV.

I am still playing around on my desktop PC with codecs (its running 64bit win 7). I had a little muck around last night as I am trying to get Megui running in 64bit for encoding blurays in x.246 for MKVs, haven't even touched EAC3to yet. 64bit poses a little more of a challenge as I had to install Sharkys 64bit codecs to get MKV playback.
Posted 09:46pm 04/6/09
huh? 360 will play divx/xvid without issues.
Posted 10:33pm 04/6/09
Good game however - pity about the zero re-playability factor.
Posted 11:24pm 04/6/09
Yeah, now it does but when I set it up MS hadn't tacked divx support on and all it could play was wmv's.
