Valve have just pushed out a new update to Left 4 Dead - here's the changelog:
- Finding a dedicated server when starting the game from a lobby is now faster and more reliable
- Versus mode is now locked to Normal difficulty
- Difficulty on a server is now locked to the one set by the lobby reservation
- Fixed lagouts/spikes after level transition
- Fixed directory issue with spray logs in some cases
- Fixed video settings not saving after closing video options dialog
- Corrected a boomer suicide exploit
- Several minor localization fixes
- Fixed a error were disabling cheats would incorrectly reset data
As always, just bounce Steam to get the update.

Why would they do that? Callvote is REALLY EASY to use and should be changeable. Versus should also be what the majority want.
I would still like to see a normal server search, like the rest of Valve games.
Finding a game within Australia using the default options is absolute dongs!

I really like the lobby system that sets up and configures a game, followed by placing you onto a free dedicated server. As mentioned above it would have been nice to be able to pick a geographically close server manually (or at least easily if there currently is a mechanism I'm unaware of).

Locking the difficulty of the game is also pretty lame. I like to be able to change the difficulty of the game if it's too hard/easy midway through and have it stay that way for the rest of the game, until I decide to change it again.

Expert difficulty versus modes is just about who can sprint the furthest most of the time.
And I think what it means by: Difficulty on a server is now locked to the one set by the lobby reservation.
Means that you can still in game vote but you can't set up a lobby on normal and then change it to expert while still in the lobby.

edit: While I think normal versus mode is ok now... I am thinking in 2 weeks time when all the noobs learn the maps really well I dont think infected will ever have a chance. Just have faith that valve know what they are doing :P

I'm glad they fixed this. We ran into this bug once a few nights ago. We had a couple mates in our group who were new to the game, so we set it to Normal. But, every time we'd progress to a new chapter, it'd reset back to expert, and we'd get destroyed. It was really annoying having to change it back all the time.

A good team of survivors make it to the end of every level without fail, most of the time with 4 med packs.
The only exception is a good tank vs tier 1 weapons, that's the only situation I've ever seen a team not make the safe room.

All they need is an option as lobby the same as campaign mode, or let all 8 people vote on difficulty change.
Something isn't quite right with the vs mode in the server browser, servers still show up with 4 slots.
I too prefer vs on advanced, it actually gives the humans a challenge.

I use xfire to do a search for games under 100 ping and min of 6 players. Then quickly bust through the 6/8,7/8 servers looking for player scores of 0 or close to it, that usually means a game has just started.
Works fairly well, stupid that I have to resort to that though.

Not sure why you guys have so many issues. I just hit Play Online, chose to enter either a lobby or a game in progress. I get Internode, GA or 3FL usually, no dramas?

PS. Dead Air finale is lame ;) wtb less corners to huddle up in. Yeah I usually got the same when the game was first released.
Was giving us USA over and over non-stop despite 2 aussies/2 NZ's.
I'm not too stressed about the locked to Normal VS thing, Valve will change it, so much rage going around the Steam forums... stupid decision that made no sense at all. We'll get a proper lobby filter, will be good VS gaming.

It was actually quite fun, a little too easy for the survivors, they won the round most times.
Although there was an excellent moment when we SMASHED the survivors right outside spawn, everything just happened right.

L4D is the win atm, I played soo much VS I forgot about the coop, NEARLY finished Dead Air last night on Expert, I find it's probably the easiest campaign just need a few more cracks.
Biggest win is when you stand on the crane/alert the horde and you have multiple fuel cans at your disposal, RAPE.

Tried the server browser command, Internode/GA/3FL wouldn't show on the public server list so I had to manually add 28 Internode servers to the Favourites list. Even then I couldn't join them from the freaking browser since it doesn't query them properly (tries to query the IP 0.0.0.0 instead?) - had to manually connect to the IP from the console.
Shame because there were so many empty servers in .au that I couldn't manually start a game on. They better fix this as that's completely bulls***.

erm you could have gone into custom and typed gamearena, internode or 3fl into the search for tag box, then right click them all and add to favs.

Thanks for that, didn't look in Custom since you know .. the INTERNET tab seemed like a better place for internet servers (and maybe having a checkbox for filtering custom games) :)

For some reason my search internet doesn't work well, it returns maybe 4 servers. It only does it in L4D. It works fine in TF2 though.
The fav/history tabs work fine though.

That's what I do, works much better.
For anyone who didn't quite understand what this post meant, you type openserverbrowser into the console, and it opens the standard Steam server browser, like in TF2 or whatever. Add -console to the launch options of L4D to enable the console.

they really need to do something to stop people from holing up in closets etc. it such a lame tactic and if you are on the infected side theres pretty much s*** all that you can do to get them out.

Anyone that knows how to exploit as survivors can take on unlimited hordes + boomer attacks and take close to 0hp damage.
I'm fine with exploiting on expert, it's 20hp per zombie hit, s*** slips through when you're surrounded and the horde does there job.

The game scores on percentage of distance traveled not time spent alive.
They have to come out sooner or later to go further.

Kill the multiple hordes/boomer attacks (which is the "hardest" part) then move. What's going to stop you? A smoker that takes 5+ seconds to do ANY damage or a hunter that does <5hp damage per hit that's guaranteed to be removed instantly?
Finale horde rushes, a boomer getting 4 hits survivors... these should be fatal scenario's.
ATM you can clearly melee/defend ALL zombies in front of you (2hp per hit) while taking hits from behind (1hp per hit) for multiple minutes without going into the yellow, let alone getting downed. That's not even taking into account that a large amount of players know how to back into a corner/closet and melee to sustain 0 damage.
It's just far too weak. The game is great, melee needs a bit of a slowdown/stamina effect that's for sure, but VS just needs to be set on a higher difficulty so that people that play expert COOP don't have to play VS 2 difficulty settings lower.
Valve will fix it, surely.

I tend to take the Hunting Rifle since nobody else does, you can easily pick off 20 stationary zombies before your team is even within range to alert them. Sometimes you get lucky and can kill 50 of them in 10 bullets, bullets through body ftw.
Pretty good against tank too provided your team gives him the run around.

I have the problem of being hit by teammates repeatedly when I melee zombies (e.g. when I'm reloading), especially when I'm leading. Even though I don't need assistance on the one-f*****g-zombie and have the situation under complete control, they ALL insist on shooting at him anyway when he's an arm's length away from me - causing TK damage. It's not just noob players, either.
