While things were looking bleak not so long ago, a meeting of the nation's Attorneys-General yesterday yielded good news as an agreement was met to release a discussion paper on the topic of introducing an R18+ games rating before the end of 2008.
The paper will be able to be discussed by Australian citizens when it's released before the end of the year in hope a greater percentage of people will see the value in adding an extra rating to the games current rating system.
However, the paper won't be released before renowned anti-R18+ South Australian Attorney-General, Michael Atkinson, has been able to revise the submitted paper as he thought it was
too "biased" in its current form.
"There is little point in seeking public comment on an unfirm footing that neglects one side of the argument. I look forward to contributing to the development of a fairer discussion paper," he said.
Once revised and agreed upon by the Attorneys-General, the discussion paper will be released on the internet for all to peruse and comment on, at which point in time we'll be sure to point you in the right direction.

He's just making violent games available for kids. He should just switch his fight to stricter punishment for retailers selling R18 games (once instated) to minors to limit their access. So all the kidingtons can still play Barny's friendly hugging adventure while we get to play Remove his face with a shotgun 4.

Has anyone that has worked at a bar or been at a bar ever seen government types come in randomly to check IDs or something? How do they enforce this with alcohol? I know the bars I go to are pretty ruthless about asking for ID because the fines are so steep.

In VIC the punishment for supplying alcohol to a minor is $6,805, or 10% on-the-spot fine (as is normally the case, $681).
Interestingly this is much lower than the penalty for supplying alcohol to an intoxicated person: $13,610 (or 10% on-the-spot).

As far as the R18+ rating goes - it's trivial to bring in. The structure required is as if for alcohol, cigarrettes, etc. Copy-and-paste legislation-wise. No need for anything like the 'Responsible Serving of Alcohol' because that mostly applies to management of intoxicated people, which clearly can't happen with games...yet...
