Queensland Gamers League 10 Years Old

Thought this was a bit of interesting trivia; while we haven't made much noise about it, one of the country's more dominant gaming communities, Queensland Gamers League, is 10 years old this month.

10 years ago this month, we took the workings of the popular LAN I created in a timber shed in Salisbury, Brisbane, called Regen Lan (named after our Quake clan of the same name) and made Queensland Gamers League. The first event was one organised to Promote Wireplay called Wireplay Invades Brisbane, which saw a national competition in Quake over the then closed Wireplay network.

Quite a few members of the team that went into creating that event went on to create AusGamers out of a large part of QGL as it stood two years on from that.

More maybe interesting info: Wireplay was a brand licensed by Telstra from BT in the UK. The Team that created QGL and AusGamers later went on to take over the operations at Wireplay and finally removed all the closed environments making Wireplay open - removing the wireplay brand and replacing its system with home-grown technology that we used to go on and re-brand the service as BigPond GameArena - who continue to use that technology today.

It has been one hell of a ride with some awesome guys and its great to see some of the people who came to that and many other events, have been long time fixtures in the team at Mammoth Media today. Awesome times; here's hoping for ten years more - maybe we should have a LAN!?!? lol

Well I gotta say a big congrats must go out to all the Mammoth team and the QGL lads over the past few years - I didn't make it to many LANs but hung around a few of them to say g'day and catch up with peeps.

The development of the business and the achievements of everyone should be commended as you've taken a hobby and turned it into a successful company (let me know when you float please).

As for the forum, QGL will always be my homepage and #1 spot on the internet - it's a great community of misfits and retards that all blend in well with each other except for that deviate guy who tried to e-bash me.

The old quake day lans use to be awesome, I actually attended every MPU (Sydney's QGL) for about 3 - 4 years straight. Also made it to a few QGL events to smack down some Brissy gamers ;P

Nothing like being in a big hall full of people quake'n!

it was 1 third pissed 1 third stoned, and 1 third off my nut on speed, f*** we played the most awesome quake at that time of night, some of the absolute bulls*** moves you'd see out of people at three am on a saturday night at the old yeronga state school would have blown ur minds!

play quake till your eyes bleeed and it all becomes crazy instinctive

As one of the younger guys here (22) i remember the original qgl days when my uncle 'CarnRat' first introduced me to the lans when i was about 13 and met a couple of you older guys. played alot of quake over dial up on the wireplay s*** I then lurked the forums for ages before i actually signed up. went to a few of the lans and had a awesome time

I had a mate that used to play with 2 joysticks, one for movement and one for aiming. It actually worked well for the most part, just not as responsive for snap aiming. In some ways it's similar to current console control schemes.

I remember being about 16, and going to one of the yeronga lans where I hung out with Casa, Marty, Rolly and Adam (and maybe Andrew as well)... We drove to get maccas in Casa's sick SWB Pajero, and I got stuck in the middle back seat holding about 8 drinks while casa tried everything to get me to drop them.

ohh how I don't miss getting up at 5am and lugging s***loads of crap to Parramatta Masonic Club, up 3 flights of stairs an running cables, setting up tables, bringing in jolt!! Then having to pack it all up and end up at home at 1 or 2am. Granted we only did 1 day lans not all weekend ones, but it still took it's toll, especially when you have people like Bane doing nothing all day, hi Brent hehe

Just had a quick crack at this and turns out its not as easy as I thought so I'll have to have another try later

I went on a stats bender a while back and did a bunch of things like users with the highest/lowest average post sizes, users posts over time, etc. I'll see if I can find the code, it's still lying around somewhere

edit: actually looks like the first ~300 people all have the same signup date as mongie; its possible we didn't track that for a while

Well come on Term lets get an old school lan together.....call Yeronga PS and see if their hall is available.......don't forget to order the phase 3 generator though and someone bring lotsa black plastic. I loved the old regen lan days, and even the early QGL ones. Used to have a blast at the QGL meetings.......Jim rolling up with his magical case of pron that we would all drool over. We could do a steak night at the Lord Stanley to organise the lan.

Lan's at keato's and rats where the best. I remember a lan at keato's rat had a shoelace tied around his mouse arm and one end of the baby swing so he could kill two birds with one stone :) I also vaguely remember some weird lan at pantsmans studio in east brizzy.

Yeh, it started with a few rounds of free-for-all DM, I forget how it finished - in duels I assume.

It was the first comp system I wrote and it crapped out. All I really remember from it is the stress of figuring out how to keep the comp going when my crappy program broke.

Oh, I also remember having a big screen TV, or at least big for its day (supplied from Buba's work I think?) that displayed the competition scores. That was pretty cool.

trog is basically the maddest c*** ever. when i first came to the qgl lans i was the biggest f*****g computer noob alive (whats changed) and i remember my network card was f***ed and wasn't working. trog had like 143453245243 things to do (and in one of the qgl vids that are floating around when trogs bein interviewed u see me come up and hassle him 4 his l33t brainz) but he still always helped me and tried to get my s*** running and was never ever the slightest bit rude!!! I LOVE TROG

girlfriends sister i think? she was pretty hammered though, i think she would have been keen if you had bought her a drink first.

also who was that prick at one of the yeronga lans who had cs beta4 on cd but wouldn't give it to anyone, it came out like the morning of the lan and we were all stuck playing beta3

Lan's at keato's and rats where the best. I remember a lan at keato's rat had a shoelace tied around his mouse arm and one end of the baby swing so he could kill two birds with one stone :) I also vaguely remember some weird lan at pantsmans studio in east brizzy.

I'd forgotten about lanning at Keato's and Rats. I remember the night Q2 came out we spent it under Keato's place playing DM till all hours. That lan over at East Brissie was when we all joined SAS. We had like 20+ players there, was a mad lan, playing DM on Rats custom maps.

yeah flashing up that lame wallpaper for a few mins earnt me a retail copy of mohaa so foad!

also note hueeeg 21" monit0r plus stereo and gametheatre xp with sony dj headphones. i was trying (unsuccessfully) to emulate the best cheaty sound card ever.. the aureal a3d. that card used to have hearing distances 5 times further than normal so in cs you could hear footsteps at the opposite spawn practically. it was like having a fkn radar, only worked under win98 though :(
