Harmonix, EA and MTV have now officially announced Rock Band 2, dated for release in only a few months time this September for North America on the Xbox 360. Given how neglected Australia has been on the first game (the one that was released in November 2007 in North America) we'd advise not to hold your breath too long for this one.
Nevertheless, here's the points of note from the
press release:
- Backwards compatibility with Rock Band downloadable music content. All previously purchased tracks will immediately load into your Rock Band 2 song list. No need to re-purchase or re-download.
- The biggest and most diverse soundtrack ever featuring some of rock’s most prolific acts, comprised entirely of master recordings.
- Major new and dynamic online modes that will connect the entire Rock Band community in more ways than ever before both locally and globally.
- More variety of instrument choices than ever before with new and improved drum and guitar peripherals, enhanced functionality and innovative new designs - all fully compatible with the original Rock Band instruments.
Interestingly, the Xbox 360 version will enjoy a short period of exclusivity, with other platforms to follow 'later in the year'. Perhaps another jab in our ribs, as like the original Rock Band, it will most likely be region locked to prevent importing - unlike the region free PlayStation 3 version.

It's a pretty good guide but doesnt seem to say anything about the microphones. Can you just use any standard USB mic? Both X360 and PS3 vers?
Also, if you read this Spray, I have one simple request. Get some real metal in the game.
Metallica and Iron Maiden are appreciated, but c'mon get something with a bit more balls, if only for the karaoke fun. There's not one karaoke game on the market that has songs with growling/screaming vocals.
Sure it's not the most accessible music but even people that don't particularly like it would probably have fun trying to sing along to something like Cannibal Corpse, The Haunted, Lamb of God or something more mellow like Opeth, In Flames or Machine Head. (Lamb of God and In Flames were in Guitar Hero, but no vocals obv).
Even if it's just via downloadable content, bring it on.

At least the Guitar Hero francise seems capable of releasing their products here in a reasonable time line...
ps. The rockband drum kit (pedal) seems to break alot.
But seriously the sequel will be out before Rock Band 1 is on sale here.

I think I'll take the few hundred dollars Guitar Hero 4 will cost, and spend it on these for Rock Band.

Not all of that is necessarily Rock Band 2 stuff though, cos "More than a Feeling" and "All the Small Things" are DLC tracks that are already released. Still muchly awesome though.
