EA have announced a new title in the Battlefield series - Battlefield Heroes. From the press release:

Battlefield Heroes is a brand new game from the team behind Battlefield 1942(tm) and Battlefield 2(tm). It's fun cartoon-style graphics and gameplay caters to players of all skill levels. It is easy to pick up and play but with robust character customization and a deep online meta-game, gamers can spend hours building up their characters and conquering the world.Oh yeh, and it's free, due "summer 2008" Euro-time, so we can expect it in the harsh Aussie winter.

Everything had been about realism for so long.
Looks like an attempt to cash in after the massive success Valve just had with TF2 imo. Shame on you EA shame on you!
Will have to wait for some actual footage though to be sure.

But the Asian model is via monthly subscriptions isn't it?
Ergo, not likely to work in the United States of Europe,Australia and America.

Not always, there are a few MMOs that are free to download and play, and you're charged for extra content. Maple Story comes to mind.
Hell, I'm pretty sure that Fury follows this model now too.

Aah fair enuff. Always a bit dubious about that model. The temptation to mudflate would be very strong. I see images of Magic The Gathering already.
