The OFLC have had their way once more with Activision and Cauldron HQ altering the game to meet the 'Australian standard'. Changes made include reduced ragdoll physics, no dismemberment of enemies (alive or dead) and toned down blood effects.
Soldier of Fortune Payback thrusts players into adrenaline-pumping mercenary combat action after a routine escort mission goes horribly wrong. The game evolves the signature gameplay of its predecessors with refined controls, tension-packed warzones, and an enemy damage system that may be shocking even to experienced FPS players. Players are armed with an impressive arsenal of more than 30 weapons, including sub-machine guns, assault rifles, and projectile explosives, as they hunt down an insidious enemy that respects neither laws, nations, nor armies. The game also offers individual and team based online modes including: Death Match, Team Death Match, Elimination, Team Elimination, Capture the Flag and Demolition.
This isn't the first time the OFLC has stamped their collective hoofs, nor is it the first time a game has had to altered as a result. Just more evidence we need an R18+ rating for videogames.

no offence to the SOF franchise, as i did have a blast in 1 and 2.... but is there any reason to buy it over all the other shooters APART from the gore...?
it was primal stress relief, pure and simple, and without that it'll just be a shooter that is sub-par/generic, unless they've surprised us and actually done something unique or new besides a next-gen gore model.

either way - maybe someone'll find a crack to make the aus version goralicious or copy over and upload some files from the american version... but i think most people will just be taking the peg-legged route on this one.

I'd have to admit this Soldier of Fortune lacks a lot of the stuff that made number 2 so great. For starters you can't lean, which makes killing enemies all bunched in a room around a corner rather tedious. The graphics are rather average in comparison to todays games, the storyline is weak at best, and there are no cut scenes for the game, only when you first start a mission you get the same generic cut scene.

The weapon selection is alright I guess, although some guns sound nothing like what the should. The enemy AI is poor at times but also really dodgey as I found myself getting shot several times and had no clue as to where from as they shoot you from across the map. Level design is pretty weak also. On the bright side the gore is probably the fun part of the game, as sometimes you can blow a guys arm off and he will continue to run away or fight until he dies, same with blowing someones leg off, they still reach for their gun and shoot. One cool feature about the game I thought was when you reload objects and terrain in the distance blurs and you can only focus on your gun, somewhat like when a camera zooms on something in particular.
