News.com.au are
reporting that an alleged leader of piracy group Razor1911 has been sentenced to 18 months jailtime in the US for piracy:
"Shane Pitman's conviction and sentence should send a strong message to organised internet gangs like Razor1911 that stealing and illegally distributing game software online is not a game," said US Attorney Paul McNulty...Pitman was among more than 40 individuals targeted worldwide by Operation Buccaneer, a 14-month undercover investigation by a variety of law enforcement agencies.

Looks like he'll have some time to think over what he's been doing. I'm sure alot of software companies are rejoicing.

i wouldnt want to spend 1 nite in jail, let alone 540 of them
Posted 11:44am 10/6/03
yet DVDs are say 34 dollars, take millions of dollars to make, and a year plus. they're twice as long at least, and audio + visual. also more expensive to replicate. IT MAKES NO SENSE DUDE.
if i ever start a band, my cds will be like 10 bucks.

it isn't all that bad, for something like theft. only medium/maximum security would be truly horrendous, and imagine this guy will get the little happy heavenly prison cell that costs more money to operate than my whole family earns in a year. (which a complete bs, prisoners get more money spent on them than my whole family)

Do you really think that if pirating went away overnight that music publishers and games developers would drop prices? If anything I think that dropping prices would help eliminate piracy. I mean, its not uncommon here to pay $100 for a game that you'll lose interest in in a month.
Hah :) Pirate away! I'll only buy something if its really good. If people object to this, bite me.

I've heard that even Juvy detention is also pretty bad. . . .at the end of the day prison is still something you dont want to get into no matter how 'weak' anyone thinks it is.
As for 18 months not being that bad. . .well what the hell is he going to do when he gets out? You cant apply for a job without letting them know abt 18 months worth of prison. You have to realise that being sent to prison has more implications than just "oh well, 18 months away, ill see you when i get back". No doubt it will impact him for the rest of his life.

A US prison is the last place a computer pirate would want to go.

Games and applications are still available before release date.
Cracks are made and are freely available as soon as new protection comes out.
The TV & DVD piracy scene has grown in leaps and bounds since then.
The console piracy scene is even bigger than a year ago and music piracy is a part of everyday life for even non computer users.
Though on that note, making arrests like this and examples of people sure would make me think long and hard about it if I was in an organised group. 18 months jail for copying stuff you never use - So not worth it.

I mean... yeh. ...go antipiracy...!

Posted 05:43pm 10/6/03
really it is...
As for the argument that CD's DVD's and games should be cheaper and then less people will pirate: That's a very nice thing to say since you know they never will drop the prices, so you never have to stop pirating. I would like to see ANY pirate out there stop copying games for $1 a cd compared to say even $10 a game... WON'T happen I tell you.
Piracy will always be there, nothing you can do to stop it, same as theft and whores. Those are things people do because they are people. Trying to justify it though is just stupid. Just admit that you are stealing and deal with the concequences if you are caught.
I hardly ever buy games because I cannot afford them. If they were cheaper I would buy more, but that still doesn't justify if I were to go out and pirate them. If you can't afford a car, do you steal it and blame Holden for pricing their cars out of your financial reach?
my two cents

Remember the movie Catch Me If You Can? Well I read Abagnale's book and by christ if it were one place I'd commit a crime, it sure as hell would NOT be France. No prison sex or anything like that - just imagine being shoved into a completely dark dungeon (basically), with no light, little food and water, a bucket to go to the toilet in (only emptied something like once a month), no running water, little ventilation, no warm clothing and nothing to sleep on. Abagnale spent 6 months ( I think ) in such a prison and by the end of it he was almost completely mad. The jailers would play a game with him where they'd throw a filty, lice ridden mattress in, let him fall asleep then pull it out from under him a few hours later.
When they finally released him (and he hadn't even been to trial yet!) they had to gradually increase the light so as to not damage his vision (6 months living in the dark isn't good I don't think). Abagnale never killed anyone, he was just a conman - so yeah don't go to France and commit crimes.

Ever read Papillon (an autobiography) or seen the movie? The French are, or were, cruel f*****s in their jails (justifiable in some instances). I don't know what they're like now, who knows they may have finally joined the 20th century (yes I know we're in the 21st).

The big dude smiles hungrily at him and asks, "Well, Boy. Do you want to be the Mama or the Papa?"
In a panic, the little white guy thinks quickly to himself, "Well if I say I'm the Papa, maybe it won't be so bad!"
As soon as he said, "I'll be the Papa", the big black dude answered, "Well come over here and suck on Mama's big fat d***!"

Fairlight, Myth and Razor1911 should all just go back to making intros for games. They were always cool.
Posted 12:28am 11/6/03
well thats not really right, because if you steal someones car, then you have the car and they do not. However, if you copy someone's game then both parties are still able to play the game. The maker of the game does theoretically lose money from a missed sale.. that is assuming that you were going to actually buy the game in the first place if you hadnt already got a copy.

Actualy what pirates do is more akin to taking a product of it from the manufactor and hand it to the public for next to no cost.
That whole "actualy going to buy the game int he first place" thing is just a excuse.

Or even better yet, look at all those people trying to sell stuff from the boot of their car :)
They haven't stopped those people have they :)

Someone said earlier about it being that you would buy the game if you couldnt pirate it, I have 30 games on my comp and wouldnt pay 10 cents for 95% of them, the games I play I pay for.
In some instances the game becomes famous because its so easily available and they sell tenfold in the sequal.
