The world of the tactical role-playing game is a varied and global one, spanning numerous countries of origin which tends to make for a different *flavour* game to game, depending on its development home. In Japan, where many feel the genre is most advanced, titles such as Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics and the more recent Triangle Strategy reign supreme.
Now a new IP has entered the fray, and from an ex-Fire Emblem director, to boot -- Redemption Reapers.
In a bit of belated, "ICYMI" news, Replaced -- a 2.5D action-platformer with so much sci-fi cyberpunk attitude it should be illegal, properly stole the show after multiple viewings from us, and in our opinion, leaving us feeling a bit silly we didn't write about it when the awards took place. But, here we are to share the word on what you should ABSOLUTELY have on your radar for 2023 (if you didn't already given the game was announced around a year ago).
A visual standout at The Game Awards was Guerrilla Games' expansion reveal for Horizon Forbidden West -- Burning Shores. Featuring more overgrown post-apocalyotic vistas of a nature-reclaimed Los Angeles, we see Aloy taking to the skies on the back of a Sunwing over the once-famous Hollywood hills.
But it's bad news for PS4 owners with this new adventure landing for PS5 owners only, with Guerrilla stating the expansion's ambitious moving parts will require the extra power.
Based on how the awards were going through the course of the event, when it came to the coveted final gong of Game of the Year, there was a sense that it could go either way between Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarök. Even as a part of the judging panel we weren't sure who'd come up trumps. But it would be the earlier released title that took top honours, while also cleaning in three other categories.
The first and last expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, the MGS-styled-in-name, Phantom Liberty, is already attracting some keen interest from fans, us included. And today during The Game Awards CD Projekt RED revealed that Stringer Bell himself, Idris Elba, had joined the cast for its next giant piece of content.
Diablo IV is on track for a June 6, 2023 release across PC and consoles, with Blizzard making the announcement during The Game Awards alongside showcasing a stunning cinematic trailer. In it, we get to see fallen Angel Inarius take on the game's villain Lillith in Hell, and if you're a fan of what the cinematic team at Blizzard cooks up - this is a must watch.
In what was likely one of his last performances, it was revealed at The Game Awards that the late Kevin Conroy would return as the voice of Batman in Rocksteady's forthcoming Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. In this instance, however, it's also revealed that Batman has been corrupted alongside the other members of the JL, which potentially makes him the most dangrous of all.
It wouldn't be a The Game Awards without a Hideo Kojima moment, and this year he appeared with a bang, revealing Death Strading 2, which was the worst kept secret of the show in its lead up, but that didn't stop the reveal from being both impressive and as confusing as you'd expect from a Kojima joint.
Atomic Heart looks incredible, and its Russian BioShock vibes have put it near the top of our most anticipated games list for 2023. Even though we got a look at the next game from the creator of BioShock at the game awards, with the reveal of Judas, this new Atomic Heart trailer is still worth checking out.
And yeah, talk about an amazing reveal. The original Hades from Supergiant Games is hands down, to me at least, one of the best games of all time. A rogue-lite like no other, with an incredible narrative and layers upon layers of depth. And so, in a surprise more for the indie studio, Hades II is coming. And it looks spectacular.
The Game Awards kicked off with a huge bang on Friday (AU time), first with Hades II, which was then followed by one of the most tatalising trailers we've ever witnessed from the awards in Judas, a new game from BioShock creator, Ken Levine, and his new studio, Ghost Story.
And sporting a pretty faithful visual style to the art and comics of the series' creator, Mike Mignola. If you've played West of Dead before, which also ironically featured Ron Perlman as the Gunslinger and was made by Upstream Arcade who are handling this, you'll get an idea for just how this prticular style of art can run in a proper gameplay session.
After undergoing scrutiny by the US-based regulatory board, the Federal Trade Comission (FTC), the body is officially moving to stop Microsoft's landmark $70 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Citing Xbox gaining "control of top video game franchises, enabling it to harm competition in high-performance gaming consoles and subscription services by denying or degrading rivals’ access to its popular content" as the reason.
Epson's latest home theatre projector is the Epson EH-TW6250 4K PRO-UHD (AUD 2099), which in addition to supporting bright 4K full 10-bit HDR via its pixel-shift technology it also has some features perfect for gaming. Namely input lag of under 20ms, which when paired with a massive screen will no doubt be incredible for PC, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5 gaming.
His grace, the head of Valve and commander of Steam has chimed in on the whole Microsoft buying Activision Blizzard deal and Sony's stern disapproval of Call of Duty becoming an Xbox franchise. It's a back-and-forth that has been going on for months, with regulatory boards and international checks and balance checkers investigating the groundbreaking $70 billion deal.
