Crytek has today announced that their medieval-inspired action slasher Ryse: Son of Rome will be heading to PC on October 10th, with those pre-ordering the game before its launch gaining an exclusive 25-track digital soundtrack.

Previously an Xbox One-exclusive title, the game will arrive on PC at a price tag of $39.99USD, though you may want to be quick with that incase Steam applies the dreaded Australian tax. Features typical to a PC port are expected, which includes 4K resolution support and "taking full advantage of the PC." The PC version will also be bundled with previous DLC featured on the Xbox One, including all multiplayer maps.

Full details on what to expect for the new version can be found at the Steam page, which also includes a complete list of minimum and recommended specs which aren't too bad for today's standards. Don't know what Ryse: Son of Rome is? Check out our Xbox One review for all the juicy details!

No one really expected this one, but Crytek has surprised everyone with the announcement that their previously Xbox One exclusive title Ryse: Son of Rome will now be heading to the PC front, complete with 4K resolution support.

Crytek are handling the digital side of things themselves, with publishing partner Deep Silver pulled in for the boxed version. As mentioned previously, the PC port will support 4K resolution, and will also contain the various past DLC that Ryse's Xbox One version received. This includes five new skins, 11 Arena maps, and five solo Arena maps, along with the new survival mode and three additional maps. The PC version also contains the special edition bonuses, which include the Ruins multiplayer map and Legionnaire's Trust sword.

"4K gaming is another leap in graphics quality for PC gamers and Ryse is the perfect showcase for what's now possible in high-end PC games," Crytek business development chief Carl Jones said.

"We've given our team the opportunity to show what CryEngine can really achieve, without compromising quality, thanks to the incredible hardware available now to PC gamers. Ryse will be a benchmark PC graphics showcase this year and probably for a long time in future. Our community asked for a Ryse PC version, and we have the means and technology to deliver this title with the highest quality possible."

The third piece of DLC for Crytek's rather gory gladiatorial combat game, Ryse: Son of Rome, has launched today the publisher announced.

Titled Duel of Fates, the pack includes two arena round-to-round maps and one survival map, as well as two gladiator skins drawn from the game's single-player mode, the barbarian chief Glott and Marius Titus.

The arena maps, Invictus and Barbarous, challenges players to control landmarks, defend Emperor Nero from attackers and set wicker men ablaze. The maps include underground areas that link stages together. In the Island survival map, players pick apart an endless wave of enemies while dodging a downpour of arrows. The add-on is free for Ryse season pass holders ($19.99) on Xbox One, or can be downloaded separately for $8.99.

Starting out as an Xbox 360 title heavily involved with the original Kinect, the now Xbox One exclusive title Ryse: Son of Rome is very much a shadow of its former self thanks to Crytek's very hard work. Shaking the shackles of the camera functions, the medieval title looks to be one of the more graphically interesting games to launch in the new generation of consoles, but can graphics hold up this hack 'n' slash title?

To help us see the way of Rome is Nachosjustice, who comes battle ready with his clunky armour and sharpened sword to see just what Ryse has to offer on the new console.
It’s a shame there appears to be components of the Kinect-only version of Ryse in the final product, which would account for the design that bounces between overly easy and challenging. The almighty power of ‘what could have been’ is difficult to ignore when the Ryse formula works, but in its current form it’s difficult to recommend as a must-own Xbox One title, despite the clear potential that regularly bubbles above the surface.

The TV commercial shows Marius making his way through a horde of barbarians and eventually to the pits of a coliseum to battle his way to a gruesome end.

Crytek and Microsoft have posted up an extensive developer blog along with a new developer diary style trailer for Ryse: Son of Rome, the forthcoming XBox One exclusive launch title that puts players in the boots of an ancient Roman soldier.

The blog serves as a rather comprehensive introduction to the game, explaining the process that saw the game transform from it's original plans as an XBox 360 Kinect game to the third person Xbox One title it is now, and describing some of the intricacies in the game's combat mechanics.
Ryse" combat is to be deadly, life and death, it’s intense and emotional, personal, powerful and brutal. Through the use of camera work and realistic facial animations we wanted to push for the realism of a life and death combat situation, to capture the emotion of the player and his opponents. The cameras had to feel dynamic; they had to frame every single shot like a cinematographer would have done, frame the faces and action while seamlessly moving from enemy to enemy without cuts. This had to harmoniously work without compromising gameplay, and if done successfully would actually enhance the player experience.

These ideas culminate in our execution moves. It’s during these executions when the face of your enemy shows the true emotion of what you are about to inflict on them. When the camera frames the movement of the sword, shows the shock and anticipation on your enemy’s s face, then moves through for the kill blow it creates a truly brutal, realistic experience. We put a tremendous amount of development time into the facial animations, writing all the code from scratch, and pushing the rigs and pipeline further than we ever had. "Ryse" has facial fidelity with full performance capture running real-time during combat. Meaning the faces you see in the cinematics are the same rigs running real-time in-game. This gives us the ability and edge to create believable enemies that portray emotions during executions.

Ryse is due along with the Xbox One console in November 2013.

Microsoft Studios and Crytek have debuted the new Gladiator mode for their upcoming hack and slash medieval title Ryse: Son of Rome. The new mode will be available as a multiplayer experience, offering a cooperative experience on the bloody sands with your friends as you do battle against ever-changing enemies. According to Crytek, key features of the multiplayer experience include:
Be Your Own Hero. “Ryse” offers a large variety of armor, weapons, shields, and consumables to customize your own unique gladiator. These items are earned through gold rewarded from victories in combat and impact your stats by improving your focus, XP, crowd reaction, and health. Consumables are elixirs that have a temporary effect, such as improving health or allowing instant kills.

Dynamic Tile Sets. Inspired by the movable floor pieces used to re-create historic battles in the ancient Colosseum, “Ryse” uses dynamic “tile sets” of scenery to provide a continuous stream of unpredictable challenges. Scenery hidden in the hypogeum literally erupts from the floor, providing players with settings ranging from strongholds, to ruins, to naval battles.
Numerous oher multiplayer features have also been detailed over at the official Xbox website, including customisable challenges and arenas, with Ryse featuring 11 multiplayer maps at launch.

New details on the combat system were also revealed at this year's Gamescom, ensuring that players understood all the intricate details for Ryse. Players will find that a mastery of "timing of attacks and blocks: the tighter the timing the better the player will perform." One of the examples given on the press release was a perfectly timed block, which will not only deflect the incoming attack but also throw the opponent wide open, making it easier for a counter-attack.

Executions are also plentiful with a tier system to unlock new styles of finishing your enemy, as are a number of perks, a combo counter and ranged weapons. Find it all over at the official Xbox website. Check out the multiplayer Gladiator trailer below for a glimpse at the gory action.
