It’s a shame there appears to be components of the Kinect-only version of Ryse in the final product, which would account for the design that bounces between overly easy and challenging. The almighty power of ‘what could have been’ is difficult to ignore when the Ryse formula works, but in its current form it’s difficult to recommend as a must-own Xbox One title, despite the clear potential that regularly bubbles above the surface.Check out the full review of Ryse: Son of Rome for more on his thoughts.

On November 22, prepare to step into the iconic Colosseum of ancient Rome in “Ryse: Son of Rome’s” Gladiator mode and forge your destiny in blood and steel. However, your career in the arena will not end once fame and glory have been achieved upon the sands. Microsoft Studios and Crytek today announced an entire season of upcoming multiplayer content for “Ryse: Son of Rome,” giving players new battlefields, armor, events and more to expand their legacy in the exclusive Xbox One launch title.Crytek outlined that the Season Pass will be available on launch for $19.99, and will include four add-on packs which contain a total of 14 multiplayer maps, a brand-new mode, six player skins, new level events, and access to a new tier of weapons and armor. Those who purchase the pass will also gain an in-game sword and shield with bonus attributes for use in multiplayer that are exclusive to the Season Pass.
Ryse: Son of Rome tells the story of Marius Titus, a young Roman soldier who witnesses the murder of his family at the hands of barbarian bandits, then travels with the Roman army to Britannia to seek revenge. Quickly rising through the ranks, Marius must become a leader of men and defender of the Empire on his quest to exact vengeance - a destiny he soon discovers can only be fulfilled much closer to home.Alongside the live-action commercial is the reveal of a weapons and armour video, detailing all you need to know about how to make some real-life Roman armour. Taking up the hammer and anvil is master blacksmith Tony Swatton, who is known quite well for creating video game weapons and utensils on his YouTube show, Man At Arms. Check out both videos below.
Ryse" combat is to be deadly, life and death, it’s intense and emotional, personal, powerful and brutal. Through the use of camera work and realistic facial animations we wanted to push for the realism of a life and death combat situation, to capture the emotion of the player and his opponents. The cameras had to feel dynamic; they had to frame every single shot like a cinematographer would have done, frame the faces and action while seamlessly moving from enemy to enemy without cuts. This had to harmoniously work without compromising gameplay, and if done successfully would actually enhance the player experience.Read more in the dev blog, and watch the video below.
These ideas culminate in our execution moves. It’s during these executions when the face of your enemy shows the true emotion of what you are about to inflict on them. When the camera frames the movement of the sword, shows the shock and anticipation on your enemy’s s face, then moves through for the kill blow it creates a truly brutal, realistic experience. We put a tremendous amount of development time into the facial animations, writing all the code from scratch, and pushing the rigs and pipeline further than we ever had. "Ryse" has facial fidelity with full performance capture running real-time during combat. Meaning the faces you see in the cinematics are the same rigs running real-time in-game. This gives us the ability and edge to create believable enemies that portray emotions during executions.
Be Your Own Hero. “Ryse” offers a large variety of armor, weapons, shields, and consumables to customize your own unique gladiator. These items are earned through gold rewarded from victories in combat and impact your stats by improving your focus, XP, crowd reaction, and health. Consumables are elixirs that have a temporary effect, such as improving health or allowing instant kills.Numerous oher multiplayer features have also been detailed over at the official Xbox website, including customisable challenges and arenas, with Ryse featuring 11 multiplayer maps at launch.
Dynamic Tile Sets. Inspired by the movable floor pieces used to re-create historic battles in the ancient Colosseum, “Ryse” uses dynamic “tile sets” of scenery to provide a continuous stream of unpredictable challenges. Scenery hidden in the hypogeum literally erupts from the floor, providing players with settings ranging from strongholds, to ruins, to naval battles.
