There's a lot of talk about the direction of the third Dead Space game, most involving changed gameplay mechanics, human enemies and, of course, co-op.

Having immersed himself in the Dead Space universe for the better part of the last few months for preview opportunities, AusGamers contributor, Naren Hooson, was a perfect fit to deal with this game's Unitolgy propaganda and come out unscathed (or at least turned), and he even brought with him new information on crafting weapons, dealing with snow-drenched terrain and playing nice with friends. Has the game really stood up against its predecessors though?

EA has revealed a new trailer for upcoming horror shooter, this time featuring a quite interesting remix of Phil Collins' iconic "In The Air Tonight" by the man himself as the background music. The trailer also features a mixture of CGI and gameplay, with protagonist Isaac trudging through a very snow area.
Dead Space 3 brings Isaac Clarke and merciless soldier John Carver on a journey across space to discover the source of the Necromorph outbreak. Crash-landed on the frozen planet of Tau Volantis, Isaac must comb the harsh environment for raw materials and scavenged parts. He will then put his engineering skills to the ultimate test to create and customise weapons and survival tools.
Check out the trailer below for a glimpse at what you can expect but also the sweet tunes of Phil Collins.

Dead Space 3 will be available for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on February 7.

While trouncing through both single-player and co-op, AusGamers contributor, Naren Hooson, also cornered (in a dark, scarily lit place, mind) Dead Space 3 executive producer, Steve Papoutsis, to ask him about all the new additions to their survival-horror opus, and what they mean for fans and other gamers alike.

Papoutsis makes no apologies for co-op, going so far as to say that he hopes "that people [will] look back and think of Dead Space 3 as a game that was very innovative in the co-op space". He reiterates, however, that co-op is optional and also talks in detail about the size of the new environments, why Isaac is facing human enemies here and much, much more.

It's a day of crazy embargoes lifting, but we also have another new hands-on preview for your perusal today, as we sent off AusGamers contributor, Naren Hooson, to rainy (at the time) San Francisco for an all-new hands-on play session with Dead Space 3.

Not only did he manage to smash through the single-player portion of his demo for us, he teamed up with GameArena's Joab Gilroy for some co-op crumping action to really give you the skinny on whether it's a worthy edition to a game that has always been about that solitary against-all-odds experience.

EA has announced a new "Dev Team Edition" collection for their upcoming sci-fi horror title Dead Space 3 that will give fans an insider look into the development of the latest sequel by Visceral Games. The new collection will be available in two different versions; one that includes the Dead Space 3 Limited Edition game and the other that includes just the merchandise, however the game bundle is only being shipped to US addresses.
Dead Space 3 Dev Team Edition includes:
    • Tin Collector’s Case: Measuring nearly 14”x9,” this case is covered with mysteries and trivia from all three Dead Space games, debossed with full color art based on the designs from Ben Wanat (Creative Director for Dead Space 3) and Dino Ignacio (UI Designer for Dead Space 3).
    • Serrano’s Journal: Dr. Earl Serrano’s journal full of clues and haunting artwork of his findings on Tau Volantis has come to life with exclusive content by Chuck Beaver (Story Producer on Dead Space 3).
    • Art Book: A 4.75”x6.5” hardbound book containing 96 stunning full color pages, plus exclusive material from the Dead Space art department headed by Alex Muscat (Art Director for Dead Space 3).
    • Flip Book “Data Pad:” A 10”x7” book with a metal cover that contains 9 image sets made with clear PET cover sheets over heavy-weight cardstock. The flip book was designed by Dino Ignacio to be a functional prop version of the Dead Space User Interface in the game.
    • Marker Statue: A 8” hand-sculpted, custom-molded polyresin statue that’s coated in metallic paints to replicate the maddening glyphs of the Black Marker.
    • Med-Pack: The med-pack in the game has been recreated as a 14 oz. PET water bottle, perfect for carrying your beverage of choice.
    • Poster Pack: A set of three 5”x10” single-sided posters replicating the nostalgic posters found throughout Dead Space 3 that depict an older age of space travel.
    • Postcard Set: A set of six 3.75”x6” Peng themed postcards, double-sided with art on the front and Dead Space-branded postcard information on the back.
Currently only 5,000 copies have been made for the Dev Team Edition, so those eager enough to put down the USD$100 for the non-game bundle (currently only one available to Australians) can find more info at the official website.

In the demo, players will be thrust into deep space terror when unwilling hero – Isaac Clarke – and all-new co-op companion – Sergeant John Carver – crash land on Tau Volantis, an unforgiving ice planet teeming with Necromorphs. EA has revealed several new screenshots for upcoming action horror title Dead Space 3, detailing a few of the crew plus some nice looking space shots. A few of the screenshots also tease the new drop-in/drop-out co-op character Earthgov Sergeant John Carver in all his scar like beauty.
After crash-landing on a hostile new planet known as Tau Volantis, hero Isaac Clarke discovers that this planet could be the key to ending the Necromorph infestation. In his violent hunt for answers, Isaac must battle subzero, icy conditions and deadly, highly-evolved enemies including all-new Necromorphs, gigantic boss creatures and even misguided zealot humans. Fortunately, Isaac is not alone.

Players can choose to team-up with a friend anytime in the game with the fully integrated drop-in/drop-out co-op feature. Players that choose to take down the terror together will experience additional story details and gameplay mechanics only found when playing as the co-op character, Earthgov Sergeant John Carver.

In an interview with AusGamers, Visceral's Yara Khoury, who serves as Associate Producer on Dead Space 3, has revealed that players can spend "literally 100 hours" in the weapon crafting component of the game alone, while adding replayability via co-op and beta-missions creates a "deeper game" than any of the previous iterations in the series.

"So this totally ties back into the weapon-crafting feature, and the resource management, where you have to explore the world to find the best resources that get you the best parts, and the most badass weapons that you can make," Yara told us. "So this all ties in together, into that focus in our investment into making more options for our players to explore.

"If you are into weapon crafting, you can spend literally one hundred hours in this thing. If you want to explore all the beta-paths; if you want to replay with the co-op; it’s way more about choice in Dead Space 3: you can really spend a lot of time doing that."

The rest of the interview talks about how the UI changes depending on which environment you're in, resource-management, HALO jumps (and my dislike for its return here), creating tension, Peng and much, much more.

It must be tough for developers and publishers when handling a critical success that is yet to break through to a wider market. While it can certainly be said that often niche is a more true and respectable platform, money makes the world go around, and keeps the games in development.

With a series like Dead Space, EA can clearly see that the franchise is sitting on a precipice where taking it one way will alienate the core fans who got to where it is today, but leaving it in its initial state might not bring in the new players. It's a predicament that has left many (myself included), worried about the design future of Dead Space 3.

Thankfully after a hands-on session of the game at this year's GamesCom, I walked out with renewed faith that the series is heading in the right direction while remaining firmly rooted in its roots.

A new trend emerging from E3 is the post-event roll-out of actual event presentations, in this case, a 20+ minute walkthrough of Dead Space 3 shown in almost the same capacity as it was to us behind closed doors.

It's still hard to get a grasp on whether the changes are for the good from this video, but thankfully a forthcoming hands-on report from yours truly will help clear that up, but you can at least see that the team are maintaining their penchant for dynamic set-pieces, crazy machinery, insane necromorphs and Isaac against all odds delivery here.

Watch it embedded below, or click here for a direct link.
