Electronic Arts have kicked off open beta testing again -- for what appears to be another week -- for their Spore-tech powered, sci-fi action-RPG Darkspore. The previous test only offered the game client through Steam, but this time it's re-distributable and you can now grab the whole 5.5GB installer locally from AusGamers.

There's an extensive patch log over on the official forums, which -- on top of a massive list of fixes -- includes a new Endless Play mode
Endless Play mode – After completing Apocalypse mode (or hitting the beta Darkspore Threat cap), players may chain to harder versions of the same Darkspore Threat level to prove their skills and to increase the chance of gaining rare special items.
Darkspore is due on April 28th 2011, exclusively (for now) on PC.

Valve have given us a heads up that from now through until Friday of this week, you can grab and join in on a beta for Darkspore ahead of the game's [delayed] release.
Also, Steam announces an exclusive pre-purchase offer: a four-pack of Darkspore for the price of three. So grab some friends and join the sci-fi universe of Darkspore, a fast-paced new online Action-RPG from Maxis and Electronic Arts in which you battle across alien worlds with your customized squads of heroes.
That's not a great deal of time to get into a beta, but if you're looking for something to pass the time, head on over to Steam and pick it up. Be sure and let us know you're thoughts on it too.

Last week we reported that various places had "May" as the scheduled month for release for Darkspore, but also mentioned we'd contacted EA for an official line on the game's reported delay and actual release date.

Thankfully today we can confirm from the nice folks at EA Australia that the game has indeed been delayed, but May was a bit of a stretch with the closer April 28 coming in as launch day for APAC. They were also doubly nice in giving us a bit more info about an upcoming open beta for the game.
Given the positive response and feedback received over the course of the Darkspore closed beta, an open beta will be available in April.

This open beta period will allow even more players to experience Darkspore before it launches and allow the team to incorporate additional player feedback and add even further polish to the game. There will also be additional closed betas where select players will have a chance to experience new game updates.
For more information on the game, be sure to check out the AusGamers Darkspore game page.

Blues News notes that we may see a delay for Maxis' forthcoming Spore 'reboot', Darkspore; originally slated for a March release.
Darkspore will feature dynamic, fast-paced action as players battle across alien worlds to save the galaxy from the mutated forces of Darkspore in a four-player co-operative and full single-player campaign, as well as intense multiplayer battles.
This comes in from Big Download who saw changes to release dates for the game on Amazon.com, GameStop and Steam to dates in the month of May. Not one to fall to speculation or rumour however, we contacted EA locally for comment, so stay tuned for an official line from the publisher.

Confirming yet more rumours, another reveal to come out of EA's Studio Showcase event is Darkspore, an action RPG from Sim City and Spore developer EA Maxis. Although the CG teaser trailer once again leaves pretty much everything to the imagination, several screenshots paint the picture of a diablo-style dungeon-crawler with a sci-fi setting and a Spore creature-creator level of character customisation.
Darkspore will feature dynamic, fast-paced action as players battle across alien worlds to save the galaxy from the mutated forces of Darkspore in a four-player co-operative and full single-player campaign, as well as intense multiplayer battles.

In order to defeat the malicious Darkspore, players will need to collect an arsenal of living weapons - genetic heroes with different combat abilities - and upgrade them with tens of thousands of collectible body parts and armor.

Darkspore will feature three unique classes of five different genetic hero types, with a limitless number of upgrades and customizations available through the parts players collect on each planet level. As players progress, Darkspore builds in intensity, with new planets and enemy forces requiring players to strategically select the right squad and ability combinations to succeed in their missions.
Darkspore has currently only been announced for PC with an "early 2011" release window.
