For a limited time (like, only this weekend) on Steam, as part of the game's fifth anniversary. Our original review, from way back in 2013 says that Company of Heroes 2 from Relic and SEGA features "a healthy balance of offensive and defensive tactics, and it isn’t about winning through sheer force of numbers". Where in this World War II set real-time strategy game, "a single unit can change the course of a battle".

Yep, a classic. And one that still looks good too.

And it's currently free until next week - a weekend deal if you will. And if this isn't part of your current collection, be sure to get on it. Here's the link to the store page.

With the release of the Company of Heroes 2: Master Collection, now available on Steam, this probably means that developer Relic is moving on from the game. As it packs in all the Company of Heroes 2 content into one neat package, it's certainly value for money. There's quite a bit of content here. Especially for those that haven't played it before, because Company of Heroes 2 and its expansions present some of the best RTS gaming in recent history.

Does this mean that we're going to finally get Dawn of War III? Well, here's hoping. Fingers crossed and all that. Because the Dawn of War games rule.

As do the Company of Heroes.

A new standalone expansion to Company of Heroes 2 has just been released. Dubbed British Forces this new expansion focuses on the British troops during World War II. And no doubt, covers a few of the historical battles they fought. In preparation for America to swoop in to save the world at the eleventh hour of course. A perspective gleaned from watching nothing but Hollywood movies. Either way, it looks like another fantastic addition to wonderful Company of Heroes franchise. For King and Country!

Company of Heroes 2: The British Forces is the new standalone multiplayer release in this esteemed World War II RTS franchise. It is the perfect entry point into the vibrant Company of Heroes 2 community. Play as the unconquerable Britons and their motley-crew of soldiers! A force remarkable for its diversity, including Englishmen, Scotsmen, Welshmen, Irishmen – representing everyone from the working classes to the upper class elite of the United Kingdom. Under the leadership of the fiery Sir Winston Churchill, this assorted mix put aside their differences and became the only remaining Western European nation to escape the grip of Axis-dominated Europe, before leading the final offensive with the other Allied Forces.

Company of Heroes 2 developer Relic Entertainment has revealed the first Theater of War single player and co-operative content update for their historical RTS, titled Case Blue.

The beta testing program for Relic Entertainment's anticipated RTS Company of Heroes 2 has moved into its final phase, open its doors to all, from today until June 18th.
Featuring the title’s critically acclaimed multiplayer mode, the Open Beta will allow players to experience competitive and co-operative gameplay on six of the game's maps. The Open Beta will also allow gamers to test out the first 45 levels of the game's progression and bulletin system.

As an added incentive players who participate in the Open beta will get to retain all progression and unlocks earned during this period, if they purchase the game within the first 60 days of launch and play it on the same Steam account as the beta.

Relic Entertainment and SEGA have outlined a new feature set to launch with their hotly anticipated strategy title Company of Heroes 2, a skirmish scenario component titled Theatre of War Mode that will be playable both solo, and in cooperative multiplayer.
Theatre of War allows Relic Entertainment to tell different stories from the conflict in the form of new playable single player and co-operative content. The mode includes solo challenges where players are pitted against overwhelming odds, AI battles against an enemy commander with a unique play style and co-operative scenarios for fans to enjoy with their friends.

At the launch of COH2, the Theatre of War mode will include missions from key battles in 1941. Choosing either the Soviet Red Army or the Germans, players will visit different locations across the Eastern Front and take part in some of the most famous battles that occurred that year. Each faction has 9 unique missions included. More Theatre of War missions will be added to the game at a later date, including the previously announced mini-pack for all eligible pre-order customers.

Greg Wilson, Producer of Company of Heroes 2, commented, “We get a lot of requests from fans to showcase specific conflicts from the war and it isn’t always possible to fit these into the campaign. Theatre of War gives us the opportunity to deliver these new gameplay experiences to our fans.”

Quinn Duffy, Game Director commented, “Theatre of War acts as a perfect bridge between the game’s single and multiplayer content providing a high level of re-playability and helping to introduce traditionally solo players to the online elements of the game.”
A new bundle of screenshots from the Theatre of War mode can be viewed here on AusGamers.

THQ has released some new images from the hotly anticipated Company of Heroes 2, and some accompanying new information from developer Relic Entertainment about the game's environmental effects.

As the sequel surrounds the events of World War 2's Eastern Front, the latest images all follow the theme of frosty soviet winter, but Relic explains how the game's environment effects will now have a much greater impact on gameplay, going so far to describe the weather as "the third player" in the game.
Any historian will attest to the huge role the brutal Soviet winter played in the Eastern Front theatre of World War II and this is now realistically simulated in-game thanks to Relic Entertainment’s new Essence™ Engine 3.0 and its ColdTech system.

ColdTech includes an ‘extreme cold’ mechanic which accurately encapsulates the Soviet winter which reached extremes of -40 degrees F in 1941. At those temperatures human skin will freeze in a matter of minutes, something that is portrayed in the game. On winter maps, Infantry units exposed to the bitter cold will gradually freeze to death unless the player keeps them warm by building fires and garrisoning them in buildings. Dynamic blizzards will increase the effects of extreme cold making it even more hazardous to leave infantry in the open.
Further, ColdTech will cause snow fall to dynamically accumulate and receed during gameplay, with realistic depth that affects unit movements, mark vehicle tracks and can be melted or removed by players. And frozen waterways will serve as perilous paths for units, that can be destroyed from under them by opponents.

Hit the thumbs below for a closer look at the latest images. Company of Heroes is due exclusively on PC in early 2013.
