With Melbourne-based studio Tantalus Media also behind the port after the successful versions recently released for Xbox One and PS4. But yeah, Cities: Skyliens for the Switch - out today - is very cool. Especially when you consider that it's basically the best straight-up city builder available today.

This version has been re-designed for the Switch with a new UI custom-built for the console. It also comes bundled with two of the most popular expansions for the game - After Dark and Snowfall.

“Cities is the first Paradox title on any Nintendo platform, and we are very eager to get the game out to Switch players,” said Sandra Neudinger, Product Manager from Paradox Interactive. “This is an exciting opportunity for the game - for us internally, for current players, and for new players to come. It’s very cool to experience a portable version of Cities: Skylines, so players can now carry their city with them, finding inspiration wherever they go. Imagination is the only limit, we can't wait to see what players dream and build up.”

Boiler Room unconfirmed. Cities: Skylines - Concerts, a new expansion coming to the excellent city builder, which is also available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 is all about the music. Where you can create and manage music festivals featuring in-game bands NESTOR, Elijha MOTi, and Lily La Roux. Time to dust off those music promoter aspirations.

Check it out. Scratch that, rock out with the following trailer.

Cities: Skylines - Concerts is available now for $6.99 USD via Steam.

After making a successful transition to Xbox One, developer Colossal Order's Sim City successor Cities: Skylines in available now for PS4 in the aptly titled Cities: Skylines – PlayStation 4 Edition. Port duties were once again handled by Aussie studio Tantalus Media, and having checked it out we can safely say that it runs smooth and plays great.

Cities: Skylines – PlayStation 4 Edition features:
  • Build the city of your dreams: Plan road networks, bus lines and parks. Bring education, healthcare and safety to your citizens. Build it your way!
Extensive local traffic simulation: Managing traffic and the needs of your citizens to work and play will require the use of several interactive transport systems – use careful road planning alongside buses, trains, subways, and much more.
  • Districts and policies: Ban heavy traffic in your downtown area, assign free public transport to your waterfront, or ban pets in suburbia. Designate parts of your city as a district in order to set policy at the local level, and give different parts of town their own personalities.
  • After Dark included: Watch your city become an entirely different place at night: a day-night cycle will have your citizens seeking out places to unwind after work. Add in new policies and zones to create popular hotspots and provide enough taxis and trains to get to and from the clubs!

Of course a controller is no substitute for a keyboard and mouse for this type of game, but it's definitely worth picking up if you own a PS4 and don't have a gaming PC. Trust us, it's good.

It's probably safe to say that at this point the Sim City crown is sitting firmly on top of Cities: Skylines, err, figurative head. Okay, the point being that when it comes to city builders and simulation games you really only need to be looking at Cities: Skylines, one of the most important releases for the genre in a long while. And now it's made it's way to console with the debut of Cities: Skylines for Xbox One.

It certainly looks the part.

And with the 'console optimisation' being handled by local studio Tantalus Media, we're definitely curious to see how this turned out. So much so that you should expect our impressions and thoughts in the near future.

Cities: Skylines - Snowfall is the official name for the new expansion coming to the well-received city-builder, and will take players into new territory with an in-game weather system.

Snowfall will allow mayor-players to expand and grow their cities using new transportation options while challenging them to meet citizens’ needs using several new in-game tools. All of these new inclusions will revolve around the expansion’s central feature: an in-game weather system.

In Snowfall, the difficulty heats up when the city cools down, thanks to a new in-game temperature reading that will have residents bundling up for warmth when the weather outside is frightful. Cosmetic weather, composed of rain and fog, will be added to Cities: Skylines as part of a free update, along with other features to be announced soon. Players who own Snowfall will get to face new challenges such as ensuring that their city infrastructure can handle seasonal heating demands – and, when the snow starts falling, that the roads can stay clear. New snowplow services will be required to prevent traffic from freezing in place, while new all-weather trams and expanded public transit options can help residents and visitors alike get around town – and visit the new winter parks and landmarks available in Snowfall.

Snowfall will include:
  • Now is the Winter of This Content: Rain and fog for existing maps, plus a new “Winter” map theme with snow and all of its challenges
  • The Streetcars You Desire: Expanded public transportation options, including easier management of existing lines – and Trams, a new system demanded by fans
  • World Warmth, Too: Cold weather increases demands for electricity, unless new water-based heat systems are in place
  • Plowers to the People: Build a snowplow depot to keep traffic flowing during winter weather, and employ new road maintenance systems to keep your streets in shape
  • New Chirps: #yeahthereare
You can watch a new trailer showcasing all of the above embedded below.

After spending some quality time with the final game, Kosta gives us his take on the the moderately priced Cities: Skylines from Finnish studio Colossal Order. And by quality we mean a lot of time spent building roads, zoning districts, and laying down pipe. Does it live up to the hype? Could this be the successor to SimCity? And was that whole pipe remark a crude and low brow joke in reference to the act of running underground pipes to ensure your citizens get clean and fresh water? Yes to all three!

From the review.
From the three-coloured zoning to the placement of roads, power lines and water pipes, Cities: Skylines for the most part looks and feels like the product of a SimCity cover-band. In the wake of the lacklustre and fundamentally flawed SimCity from 2013, Skylines also feels like a true SimCity game. Which works wonders in its favour. And in a number of ways Skylines could very well be remembered as the true SimCity 5, the city builder people have been waiting for over a decade to get their hands on.

Paradox and developer Colossal Order have released a new trailer today to celebrate being one month out from launching its upcoming city simulator Cities: Skyline, which for some may be the answer to their problems with EA's SimCity.

Featuring some quite extensive tools (overpasses!) that will let you create an actual city-sized development, Cities: Skylines looks to be shaping into a functional simulator. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be wary, with the likes of SimCity and Cities XXL (which has nothing to do with this game), but so far its looking a lot better.

Check out the trailer below and let us know in the comments your thoughts. Cities: Skylines will be available come March 10th on PC through Steam or the Paradox store.
