Gamespot are reporting that Sega has officially revealed that the Wii U version of the controversial Aliens: Colonial Marines - said to be the "best" - has now been cancelled. The news comes as Sega had previously denied that the title was in any trouble when the title launched on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 to quite panned reviews with AusGamers giving it a 5.5/10.

A representative of Sega told Gamespot that "Sega can confirm that the Wii U sku of Aliens: Colonial Marines is no longer in development," however developer of the Wii U title Demiurge Studios provided a statement saying it is "business-as-usual" at the company.
"We were very sorry to hear about the cancellation of Aliens for Wii U. It's business-as-usual here at Demiurge Studios. We are focused on making Shoot Many Robots for mobile kick ass and we've got another unannounced game in the works that we can't wait to unveil!"
With the Wii U version touting integration with the GamePad, it is a tad sad to know that we won't get to at least see what the final version could have been, especially with the slight drought of games that the Wii U console is facing.

Reviews have been out for a while, but we didn't get our review copy until after release, unfortunately, hence the belated posting here, but for anyone waiting for the AusGamers spin on Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marines, here its is.

Andy "Butters" Bulmer, a self-confessed sci-fi nerd and huge Aliens fan took on review duties for us, and we apologise to him and his family for what he had to deal with. There's a game in here somewhere, but an Aliens tale proper, Colonial Marines certainly is not.

Gearbox Software has announced that their first-person shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines is now available for all platforms in Australia, allowing those eager enough to go face-to-face with some acid-filled Xenomorphs.
Aliens: Colonial Marines begins with an ostensibly abandoned ship, the U.S.S. Sulaco, recovered in orbit around LV-426. Players lead a group of highly trained United States Colonial Marines as they board the deserted craft to uncover the fate of the crew. They will have to fight to survive unspeakable horrors and their own anxieties as they chase down the truth behind a galaxy-spanning deception that places humanity at the mercy of the most murderous and deadly species in the universe. Aliens: Colonial Marines features authentic environments, such as the surface of LV-426 and Hadley’s Hope, weapons inspired by the film series and is designed to provide an exhilarating and engaging new chapter in the Aliens universe.

This is a competition no self-repsecting fan of at least the first two Aliens movies should pass up, with SEGA giving AusGamers three Collector's Editions of Aliens: Colonial Marines to give away, as well as a t-shirt for each winner.

One CE for each platform: PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 as well as the duds are up for grabs and all you need to do is answer the following question in, your favourite, 25 words or less:

What would be your "all hope is lost" catchphrase like Bill Paxton's famous "Game over man, game over"?
It's pretty easy, so hurry up and get in there and enter!

Gearbox Software has revealed a new trailer depicting the multiplayer side of their upcoming sci-fi horror Aliens: Colonial Marines, detailing the various tactical decisions players will make while playing.

Showcasing the various guns that the marines will be able to use to combat the Alien life forms, the trailer also reveals several different types of Aliens that players can control, including the monstrous Crusher class which looks to be capable of withstanding a few bullets.

Check out the trailer below, this time not featuring any form of dubstep or corny drill sergeant-style dialogue. Aliens: Colonial Marines is due on February 12th 2013, on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with a Wii U version yet-to-be-dated.

SEGA and Gearbox Software have pushed out a new trailer for Aliens: Colonial Marines --their upcoming, cooperative-focused Xenomorph shooting gallery-- showing off some more space soldiers doing battle with the iconic extra-terrestrials.

Today's clip features some corny drill sergeant-style dialogue, and a rather ill-fitting dubstep backing track, but there are some new gameplay snippets worth catching, a bit more power-loader action to finish with. Check it out below.

The latest trailer for the upcoming Aliens: Colonial Marines reveals what appears to be another of the game's cooperative modes. Little explanation of the video was provided by developer Gearbox, as served exclusively by way of Gamespot, but it appears to be your run-of-the-mill four-player cooperative horde mode style scenario, with players able to utilise several defensive measures such as welding doors, and deploying sentry turrets --very reminiscent of the Aliens-inspired shooter Alien Swarm.

For plenty of movement all over the place, check out the clip below.

Gearbox Software has released the first behind-the-scenes type developer diary video for their upcoming Aliens: Colonial Marines, featuring some of the studio's artistic types talking about their dedication to authenticity.

In attempting to create the game with an aesthetic and narrative that stays true to Ridley Scott's original Alien film and as an extension of James Cameron's Aliens, the devs mention how their meeting with Ridley about a potential Bladerunner game resulted in Colonial Marines, and how they are trying to capture the same cinematic style of the films.

Disregarding the original Spring 2012 (US Fall) target, SEGA and Gearbox have today officially announced a specific release date for Aliens: Colonial Marines, now a few months later on February 12th 2013, for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
“I am thrilled to announce the definitive launch date for Aliens: Colonial Marines,” said Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software. “Aliens: Colonial Marines is the culmination of a life-time of inspiration from the films and relentless passion and drive from the exceptionally talented development team behind the scenes.”

“We knew this game would be incredible from the moment Gearbox began developing Aliens: Colonial Marines,” said, Gary Knight, Senior Vice President of Marketing for SEGA Europe and SEGA of America. “Now that the title is in its final stretch of development, we can confidently release the exact date that gamers will finally get to experience this blockbuster thrill-ride.”

We've seen and heard a lot about single-player gameplay in Gearbox Software's Aliens: Colonial Marines, but multiplayer reveals haven't been much more than brief exhibits of co-op and generic deathmatch. Today, however, the PlayStation Blog has crowd-sourced a bunch of questions from PS3 fans all about multiplayer, and while the developer is still stopping far short of full-disclosure, they managed quite a bit of new information in response.

Gearbox Multiplayer Producer Chris Brock reconfirms both four player co-operative with splitscreen as an option on the consoles and competitive multiplayer with several modes, but only mentions death match and won't commit to specifics such like map numbers.

He explains that this is an Aliens game and we definitely won't be seeing any predators, and unlike in the Aliens vs Predator games, players controlling the wall and ceiling-crawling Xenomorphs will do so from a third person perspective to reduce disorientation.

On the topic of customisation for both human and alien characters, Brock doesn't go into specifics but does boast that there will be "a wide amount of customisation in both appearance and abilities".

Speaking in a recent interview with Kotaku, Gearbox Software head Randy Pitchford describes the enormous lengths the studio is taking to craft their upcoming first-person shooter, Aliens: Colonial Marines, as a true sequel to the 1986 James Cameron film Aliens, boasting of how they're working with information from the filmmakers that wasn't explicitly detailed in the movies may actually improve players' perception of the oft-maligned Alien 3 film.

Pitchford explains how they want to tell their own story, but how it will also plug some gaps that film-fans -- like the developers themselves -- have been missing for years
We will board the Sulaco; we will be joined by a synthetic who was the same model as Bishop and will therefore look like and be voiced by Bishop actor Lance Henriksen; we will head down to LV426; we will check out the ruins of Hadley's Hope, the human colony set up by the Weyland-Yutani corporation after the first Alien.

..."At the end of Aliens, Ripley, Hicks, Newt and Bishop go to sleep and are presumably going home. At the beginning of Alien 3 something happened. We never knew what or why. But something caused them to be ejected from the Sulaco and they ended up on this prison planet.

..."One of the things we're really proud about is that there were some things that fans like us always believed were inconsistencies between Alien 3 and Aliens," Pitchford said, "But as we dig into it, as we work with filmmakers and kind of understand it all and think about it from a logic problem point of view, there is actually a truth there that makes more sense. When we are able to use it to stitch it together, Alien 3 is actually a better movie."
From our past preview sessions with the game, we're still not sold on the gameplay, but if it truly does provide a better bridge between the two films, it may just be worth playing it for that alone.

Aliens: Colonial Marines is due in Spring 2012 (US Fall) for PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and a Wii-U version to follow. Watch the most recent trailer here on AusGamers.

Someone ought to tell Gearbox Software's Randy Pitchford and the Wii U to get a room. The outspoken studio head was praising Nintendo's forthcoming home console, and its unique controller, in relation for their forthcoming Aliens: Colonial Marines shooter to Vox Games recently, touting that "no other platform can do what the Wii U can do", and that it has "so much more to offer" than other consoles.

"If you love [Xbox] 360 games, you are not used to being in a world where you have this new interface," he told the site. "But once you get used to that, you imagine the possibilities. There are some opportunities that are just not possible on any platform that does not have that device.

"We have given it a lot of attention," Pitchford added. "I think it will not be too long [before] Nintendo opens up their kimono a little bit more about that platform and where it is going, and we will be there right with them talking about how Aliens is using it."

The full interview is an interesting read as it follows the development history, and future, of Gearbox Software. As for Wii U information, we'll know more as it trickles out ahead of Nintendo's obvious big official unveiling at this year's E3, so stay tuned for more as we have it.

This could be a "sorry for the delay" teaser, but Gearbox Software has released a new trailer for their forthcoming Xenomorph Killing Simulator, Aliens: Colonial Marines, which takes the form of a pre-rendered video as opposed to anything in-game or real-time.

It's great to see the visual style of James Cameron's masterpiece captured here, and it does go towards building our hope the game delivers the experience Rebellion's AvP didn't, but after a lax showing at last year's E3 and Gearbox's up and down development style, the jury is still very much out on this one.

The Gearbox Software-developed Aliens: Colonial Marines has been lifted from its initial Autumn release bed here in Australia, to some time in Spring later in the year.

Apparently the FPS-heavy developer wants more time to polish the game, claiming in a statement regarding the delay that "[Aliens: Colonial Marines] is a process of creativity and invention", and that that in itself leads to deadline and goals being "subjective".

The team are also hard at work on Borderlands 2 and Brothers in Arms: Furious 4, plus whatever they have in the Duke Nukem pipeline.

"We don't want to sacrifice the creative process just for the sake of following a blue print," continued the statement. "We prefer to have the creative discovery shape that blue print because our goal is to make a great game, and we are prioritising this goal over the previously targeted date."

According to French gaming site, Gamekyo, it certainly has. Whether the contents of this purported Collector's Edition are the same globally will remain to be seen, but at least half of it is cool.

According to the leaked image, the CE will include the following:
  • Three exclusive multiplayer weapons: M240 Flamethrower, M577 A2 Smart Gun, M41A Pulse Rifle upgrade.
  • Exclusive game mode: USCM (United States Colonial Marine Corps) Academy Firing Range.
  • Highly detailed resin power loader figurine.
  • USCM dossier.
  • Limited edition display box.
So the other not so hot content? Well it's the multiplayer head-starts really, which is seemingly a growing component of the average videogame Collector's Edition now. It could be perceived as much of a muchness, but when it's competitive multiplayer you're talking about, packaging in a head-start for people with more money than others just doesn't seem right, at least in my humble opinion.

Gearbox and SEGA have released a new gameplay trailer for Aliens: Colonial Marines, their upcoming first person shooter that once again pits players as space marines against the xenomorph aliens, this time without any Predators the mix.

This 11 minute gameplay walkthrough is the same section of the game shown to press back at the E3 expo in June and narrated by Gearbox head honcho Randy Pitchford.

Check it out below or click here for the HD option.

Aliens: Colonial Marines is expected in Autumn 2012 (US Spring) for PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo 3DS, with a Wii-U version also expected to accompany that new console's launch.

With yesterday’s hullabaloo surrounding the semi-announcement that Aliens: Colonial Marines might be coming to the newly announced Nintendo U notwithstanding, there hasn’t been a whole lot else released about the upcoming co-op shooter from Gearbox. Sure, we had the announcement of a 2012 release date and teaser trailer this time last week, but we just wanna see a decent chunk of gameplay, dammit!

What we do have for you, are three new screenshots on the Colonial Marines game page and a far-too-short gameplay snippet that was showcased at the Nintendo press conference. You can check out the latter item below.

SEGA's Aliens vs Predator has come and gone, but it had been a while since we'd heard anything about their other Aliens franchise first person shooter, Aliens: Colonial Marines, still in the works at Gearbox Software [Borderlands, Duke Nukem Forever]. Today, SEGA fired out a new press release assuring us that the game is still alive -- now aiming for an Autumn 2012 release (U.S. Spring) on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 -- and will be on show at next week's E3 expo.
We also have one new piece of artwork and a rather underwhelming teaser trailer.
