That vid was awesome. Surely acting calm would have created less suspicion than trying to take off. Its not like the attendant can do s***.

What I wonder about that video is what the attendant was doing? Before the guy tried to drive off she had already grabbed the fire extinguisher...what was she planning to do? Hose the chick down? Go Hulk and smash the f*** out of the car preemptively?

Maybe old mate in the car yelled something to the neck flinger (eg GET IN CARNT THE JIG IS UP) and the attendant grabbed it as a reflex/defence type deal.

If only she had a gun she could have blasted both thieves to death.

Or maybe it was just a hulk smash late reaction.

I'm guessing the front plates where different then the back and the attendant noticed it on the way in, then went out to double check.(no camera facing front of car?)

Why dont we pay for Fuel before we fill up ?

The Cops are starting to bring those number plate scanners online.
They scan some rediculous amount of cars per second and when they find a dodgy plate an alarm goes off and a pic of the car is shown.

Id say servos will have them soon too.

Speaking of front / rear security camera angles.

A few months back i filled my motorbike with petrol n realised i had forgotten my wallet. When i explained to the attendant what had happened she asked for my license plate. I said i didnt know it but surely it was on security camera and she said they didnt have rear cameras (bike only has a plate on the rear).

They are already using that kinda system in the ACT for rego checks.
(ie, the police car scans the number plates in front and behind it, and will prompt the operators if the vehicles rego is expired.)

I wonder if there'll be a market for black market numberplates? Where you go into some shady dark alley, tell the guy what make and model car you have and they make some plates up identical to another car same make & colour so there's now 2 sets of plates going around, but if the cops scan the dodgy one it'll come up as legit.

For situations where the plates are stolen, I can't imagine it is difficult to 'flag' the plates within their system, so when a police car scans them it prompts the operators to look into it.

Incredibly plausible.

The car either running or just being started and the attendant grabs the extinguisher for fear of vapors going up in fire.

Sounds like someone was pretty clued in on the whole situation.

The drive away was quite entertaining.

I'm still confused about how prepaid fuel would work though.. I guess they'd have to give a card or something with money on it much like a prepaid debit card. Otherwise to fill up i'm going to shove 50 dollars in the bowser, then fill 49 dollars worth of fuel and then waste the last dollar of fuel however the f*** i want. Zoolander style.

Noone would ever steal a detachable nozzle right?

Also they could have a auto-shutoff for when its pumping faster than X Litres per Minute. Its pretty clear the choke point is the nozel, the way the fuel gushes out the hose is pretty serious.

Prepay in the US works like so:

Swipe card in pump.
Pump Fuel.
Done.

Or if you are a barbarian:

Walk in to counter.
Tell attendant $50 on pump 3.
Pump $44 of fuel.
Walk back in to counter.
Get $6 change from attendant.
Done.

Im sure there would be a way to swipe your card, the system checks your card is legit then it waits and charges you the amount you actually fill up with rather than prepaying a certain value. Cash would probably be a pain.

Australia had pay at the pump with a credit card years ago, but they got rid of it because they wanted you in the store, impulse buying junk food.

Now the only way to do it is have a WW credit card and only at WW stations.

you've not done big long trip out to whoop whoop,

there are many servos in outback NT, WA, SA, and NSW where the pumps are open 24, but there is no attendant, basiclly to swipe your credit card (i've not seen a debit card one, but no doubt they are there now) pre key a dollar amount, and pump

the only downside, (and i only know this because I made the mistake and forgot that on hot days petrol expands like a mofo into a hot tank) if you key in $100, and only need $80 to fill the tank, too bad, that said no doubt they have fixed that issue over time too

there is a massive problem with this.

currently police are going around heaps of 2nd hand shops, and swap meets etc pulling plates, and everynow and then they (the cops) have places where they give out and install oneway screws for the plates (makes it harder to steal)

I know that when I had the falcon i'd often find marks where someone had tried to remove my plates (without success) however not been an issue with the renault. my guess is if your going to steal plates it needs to be for a like car or they'll stick out like dog bollocks to the rozzas

I don't mean stolen plates, I mean duplicates. It would be pretty damn easy to just make up some letter formers to punch out numberplates out of sheet metal, go around with a camera like google does and take video of every car on the street, set up a gallery where crims can then pick a car similar to theirs & go yep I want those plates. That way if the cops scan the fake plated car on the road, nothing sus will be flagged because the plates weren't reported as stolen.

Next thing you know some poor dude who was home alone gets a call saying his car was spotted being used in a robbery and the car that was actually used is now torched and the fake plates GAWN.

Sounds like something from the movies but hey if they're willing to forge drivers licenses and passports, why not numberplates?

Yes, but if you prepay, nobody buys all the marked up convenience crap in the store.....

TBH I kind of like the fuel up, go front up to the fuel counter model. Yes I know it's a throwback and archaic but for some reason I just dig it. Hell they are probably cheaper than Coles or Woolies these days!!

Most pumps i've filled at for years offer pay at the pump, i always thought it would be a cool convenience if i had a debit/credit card. I've only got a savings account as i like living life on the edge of zero debts. (Not actually zero debts, im bad with money so i don't have a credit card :P there's no reason for me not to get a visa/master debit though).

I would be fine paying at a pump. But i don't like paying before i pump. It's mostly a routine thing. I've done it for 12 years one way it's weird thinking of doing it reverse. If the pump didn't pump until i paid though, i'd probably learn.
